What itâs Like to Be Pansexual
About the flag
The pansexual flag started showing up on various websites in 2010. The pink represents attraction to those on the female spectrum (not always biological sex), the yellow represents attraction to non-binary people, and the blue represents attraction to those on the male spectrum (not always biological sex).
What does pansexual mean?
Pansexuality is a sexuality in which you are attracted to all genders/sexes.
Myths and Misconceptions
Contrary to popular belief, pansexuality does not mean you are sexually attracted to every person you meet. Having a preference is perfectly fine for all sexualities and shouldnât be seen as a flaw.
Pansexuals are also not attracted to pans, I can assure you.
Pansexuality has also been confused with bisexuality and itâs definitely not the same thing. Pansexuality is being attracted to all genders/sexes, whereas bisexuality is being attracted to two genders/sexes.
It is also not a phase, nor is the attraction divided evenly into three triangles of a pie chart (this is from experience. I am more attracted to females but goddamn there are some attractive males and other various gendered people).
Also, weâre not here for people to use us as those that are willing to do sexual acts with multiple people.
People think weâre attracted to other species.
What is it like to be pansexual?
My experience of being pansexual hasnât been difficult so far and is probably very different from others. I found out I was pansexual after kinda just finding people (usually on social media) of all genders attractive. It was kind of an âOmg I find this person attractive but theyâre not a guyâ moment. Itâs not that special. I definitely denied that I was attracted to any other gender than male to the âboy crazyâ phase. At this time I wasnât aware that it was possible to be attracted to more than one gender. Of course, I then did a little research and found out about the other sexualities and went into a questioning phase. I was conflicted, constantly finding girls and guys attractive and then later those that consider themselves non-binary (Oh god I apologise if this sounds rude or fetishy, I donât mean it to be). I still denied what my sexuality was for a while (My bio used to sa âQuestioning my sexualityâ) but later accepted it (and replaced it with âPansexualâ). So my story isnât very interesting. It wasnât really difficult dealing with my sexuality as I kind of brushed it off and just let it slowly ease in (Or you know I was stressed out about school). All the people I have come out to are supportive towards me and do not treat me any differently (besides the one âattracted to actual frying pansâ joke). Iâve been lucky. However, it is hard to talk to someone in real life about it because all my friends are about as straight as uncooked spaghetti.
Okay, so Blaze here. Iâm closeted genderfluid pansexual. Iâm actually semi-out, a few close friends know. My parents donâtâŚI hate being in the closet about my pansexuality cause I know that I canât just say âIâm pan!â and expect to get a reaction thatâs not âyouâre a human not a cooking utensilâ or âyouâre attracted to pans?â My dadâs family is all Christian, my mumâs isnât religious, but sheâs Pagan, and Iâm Wiccan. Iâm not sure how my family will react when I come out.
The problem of being pansexual is everyone asking you if you want to f*** trees because a famous guy around here said so
Everyone will think you are making up a sexuality to look cool. Your mother will cry and push you back into your closet of shame. Your friends (the few you tell) will make fun of you for years, and avoid the friendly flirting banter that straight women have with each other. âIsnât that just bisexuality?â
Iâm not (mis)gendering someone when I think that theyâre hot. I bake, so Iâm a baking pan.Thereâs a cool symbol, a P with those gendery things combined on the end.
Whatâs it like to be genderfluid and pansexual? Well, you never know if you want to BE the attractive person you just saw or be WITH them, but honestly either one would probably be great ;) People often assume being pansexual means you are sexually attracted to kitchenware, or that youâre attracted to literally everyone, or that you are romantically/sexually attracted to children/animals because âpan means all!â and none of those things are true. Being pansexual means that a personâs sex and gender donât prevent you from falling for someone or becoming sexually attracted to them. Weâre not sex crazed maniacs, consent is still key, we just arenât limited to genders/sexes.
Pansexuality is nice because you can pick from any fish in the entire ocean
Tips for being pansexual
Being young, I have very little experience being pansexual or queer in general as it hasnât been difficult for me yet so I donât really have any tips other than âDonât come out unless youâre comfortable with it. Nobodyâs forcing you.â and also âItâs okay if youâre experimenting and you turn out to be straight. It doesnât make you less of a human.â
