Uh Huh Honey

Hinterkaifeck was a small farmstead in 1920s Germany that housed a large family. It also housed a maid who promptly quit her job, claiming that the farm was haunted. Six months after the maid left, farmer Andreas Gruber told his neighbor that he found a mysterious set of footprints out in the snow leading from the edge of the forest to the farm, but none leading back. Since then, they would hear strange footsteps coming from the attic as well as a newspaper they never bought, and on top of this, their house keys disappeared. The family hired a new maid and she arrived at the farm on March 21, just before nightfall. Just a few hours later, the older couple that lived on the farm, as well as their daughter and her daughter, were lured into the barn and butchered to death with an ax. The perpetrator then entered the house and killed a sleeping 2-year-old before making his way to the new maid’s chamber where he slaughtered her as well.

In the beginning of their marriage, Betty was the sole provider for the family and paid for Daniel’s college tuition. He eventually earned a medical and law degree and set up his own business, meaning Betty could leave her job. Betty then became your average housewife while Daniel was out making the money to support their family. In 1983, Daniel hired 21-year-old Linda Kolkena as a receptionist in his medical business. This was when the marriage of Daniel and Betty began to deteriorate and Betty began to suspect that the two were having an affair. The two fought incessantly and in 1985, Daniel moved out of the marital home and into a bachelor pad.

Daniel eventually took custody of their children after Betty dumped them on his doorstep. He also confessed to Betty that she had been 100% correct - he was having an affair with Linda, beginning almost as soon as she began working for him. This was a kick in the teeth for a woman who had been nothing but loyal towards her husband and gave birth to his four children. Betty had even been the main provider for the family for many years. The divorce was a messy and prolonged one which was eventually finalised in 1989. Later in the same year, just after what would have been Betty and Daniel’s 20th anniversary, Daniel married Linda.

On the afternoon of 6 September, 2006, 14-year-old Elizabeth Shoaf from Lugoff, South Carolina, was walking home from school after departing the school bus. As she was strolling along, she was approached by a man wearing combat fatigues. It was Vinson Filyaw, an unemployed sex offender.

Filyaw initially gained her trust by claiming to be a police officer, informing her she was under arrest. He then led Elizabeth deep into the woods to an underground bunker he had dug 15 feet into the ground beside his trailer. Inside was a hand dug privy with toilet paper and shelves made from branches. It was approximately one mile from Elizabeth’s own home. Once underground, Filyaw stripped the now-terrified girl naked, restrained her with chains and raped her. This was Elizabeth’s routine for 10 days straight. In addition, Filyaw hung explosives around her neck and warned her it would explode if she attempted to escape.

Over the course of the 10 days, Elizabeth worked on gaining her captor’s trust. She attempted to relate to him by speaking about things that interested him and making out that they interested her too. She tried to make him believe that she was enjoying her predicament and his company. Eventually, he started to let Elizabeth go outside for fresh air; using her wit, she left strands of hair on beaches hoping somebody would find them and put two and two together.

On the 10th day, Elizabeth asked Filyaw if she could use his phone to play games. Once he fell asleep, Elizabeth sent out numerous texts to her family. Police were able to trace the phone number to Filyaw because he had been arrested beforehand. As police were hot on his trail, Filyaw found out after watching the news on a battery powered television. Asking Elizabeth for advice, she suggested he flee and get a head start. He listened and left Elizabeth alone in the bunker. She soon crawled up the stairs and screamed for help.

“Attention Possible Visitors. S.O.S. I need your help. I am injured, near death, and too weak to hike out. I am all alone, this is no joke. In the name of God, please remain to save me. I am out collecting berries close by and shall return this evening. Thank you, Chris McCandless. August?”

It was the 20th of November, 2010, and Jeffrey Wolfenbarger had just left his trailer park home in New Haven, Michigan, to go to work for the day. He had left his wife, Renee King, to look after his 2-year-old daughter from a previous relationship, Lily Furneaux-Wolfenbarger.

At some point during the afternoon, King sexually assaulted and murdered Lily. The reason was simply because she had soiled her underwear and threw a tantrum - something that is extremely common of 2-year-olds. King tried to claim that Lily had died from two accidental falls which were caused by King’s bad back giving out, causing her to drop the child. However, Lily suffered from at least 20 blows to her head, 5 of which were traumatic. It was said that the trauma Lily suffered would equate to that of somebody being in a car crash. Additionally, during trial, the injuries to her genitals were compared to what a woman would experience giving birth.
