"Hey! Get back here!" I shouted.

Neteyam grinned from ear to ear, clutching something tight against his chest, and ran into the forest. "Catch me if you can!"

I laughed. There was no way he knew the forest better than I did, and my climbing skills were unmatched.

I skillfully climbed the nearest tree, and followed him from above, jumping from branch to branch. I eventually took a secret shortcut that allowed me to get ahead of him.

I stopped on a floating island, gripping a vine that would take me to the ground, and when he arrived at the spot, I suddenly descended on his face.

Neteyam yelled in surprise, and we both tumbled in the grass. He quickly got up and ran ahead, with me chasing him. I finally reached his tail and tugged him, until he fell.

"Hey, not fair-" he pouted.

"Give it back," I pointed to his hands.

He opened them to reveal my beloved pet that I've taken care of for the last few weeks. The shining atokirina floated back into my palms, and I caressed it.

"Pfft," Neteyam snorted, looking sideways.

"What, are you jealous?" I teased him.

He shot me a glare, "Heck no. I'd rather wash the dishes than spend time with someone as boring as Mi'Niri."

I knew he was joking so I nudged him playfully.

We both laid our backs on the grass and watched the birds fly above the tallest of trees.

Now he was just a lost memory, blurry like a fog.

After I lost my parents, I decided to leave everything behind, as I couldn’t stand living in my home with only their ghosts lingering around.

I ran into my favorite place: the forest.

And even though I missed my friends, especially Neteyam, I stood back. I was on my own now.

But he came back, looking for me.

I would sometimes jump to his rescue, when a wild animal attacked him and his friends, and we would exchange short glances here and there.

With time, we seemed to strenghten our bond once again. I used to shortly greet him, and he would secretly come at me to play together.

We would fly our Ikrans, hunt down animals, race in the woods, and so on...

Until one day, when Neteyam and his family were forced to leave the Omaticaya clan.

I rub my hands together. It seems like today I've used the bow a little bit too much and my palms are feeling sore.

I take a bite out of the roasted meat I just cooked. It reminds me of the times me and Neteyam used to sit by the fire and tell each other horror stories.

I hear footsteps, so I peek from above at the scenery below. People are marching towards the Tree of Souls, with candles lit in their hands.

"Huh... what is going on?" I mutter to myself.

I follow them slowly, and when the ceremony begins, the news hit me.

I run away, punching trees, pulling my hair and screaming.

Neteyam has died in battle.

But no matter, I am gonna save him.

I hop onto my Ikran, and settle off to the Metkayina lands. Even though I travel all the night, I do not close an eye, I do not feel tired.

As I traverse the ocean, I roam over a group of Tulkuns that whistle a greeting at me. I decide to follow them, as they might lead me to the village where Neteyam's family resides.

After a few hours, clouds part sideways to reveal a tidy, quiet village. People are gathering to witness the Tulkun return, but are surpised to also spot an Ikran landing on the shore.

Among all the cyan Na'vis, I distinguish a familiar blue face.

"Mi'Niri?" Kiri stares in awe at me, not having seen me in a long time. "You came back!"

Neytiri offers me a plate of food and her husband Jake smiles at me, "You've grown a lot, kid... how has your trip been?"

Before I get to answer his question, his daughter Tuk asks quietly, "Is she the one Neteyam used to talk about?"

I chuckle, "Did he now?"

Her bigger brother Lo'ak responds, "Oh yeah, like a lot. Hey, do you still have that Atokirina pet?"

I shrug, "I lost it at some point. It probably wandered off on its own, but I remember bawling my eyes out over it."

Lo'ak and Tuk laugh, Kiri also hiding a smile behind her hand. I address Jake, "And to answer your question, yes, I had a good trip. Thank you for the food."

He nods, then gets up and leaves after Neytiri. The children burst out the doorframe, leaving me alone with Kiri.

She asks me shyly, "No offence, but considering you have been communicating only to Neteyam after your... parents' death, why are you actually here?"

I grin, pleased that she brought up the subject. "I have a plan, and I need you."

Knowing that Kiri has a strong bond with Eywa, she might be able to do wonders. We asked Tsireya, Tonowari's daughter, to show us the way to the Spirit Tree.

On our way there, I take a moment to admire all the sealife surrounding me, and when I feel like I'm out of air (due to not have been taught how to breathe underwater), Kiri gives me a pair of glittery pink wings that can help me with breathing.

Tsireya is guiding us there in secret, as Kiri is not allowed to connect to the Tree anymore, because of an almost lethal seizure she had a while ago. However I trust that she won't make the same mistake again, and I also have faith in Eywa for that matter.

I eagerly extend my bonding hair strand to one of the Tree's branches, and it curls around it, taking me into a world of immortal spirits.

Kiri appears besides me, meaning that she has successfully entered the same vision. Now all we have to do is summon our dear friend Neteyam.

I am met with the sight of glowing water butterflies and colorful fish. An ilu suddenly swims past me, and I feel a hand grabbing me from behind. The creature speeds to the surface, then my head pops out of the water in a splash of salty drops.

I turn my head to the person riding the ilu. "Neteyam!" I gasp.

He laughs at having performed yet another prank on me. "Didn't see it coming, now did ya?"

My expression turns serious, remembering my mission here. "What happened?" he asks, confused.

Another ilu jolts out of the water. Kiri gracefully guides the animal towards us and states, "You are needed back, Neteyam, and Mi'Niri came here to save you."

"But I'm right here, can't you see?" he says, dumbfounded.

He doesn't realise he is dead. No matter, that won't affect our plan.

I change the subject, "Uhhh... I know a cool place, let us go there!"

Kiri leads us to said place. It is the spot where Neteyam's body was left to rest. The ground is covered in bright corals, and as Neteyam inspects the sight, Kiri is trying to gather the power of all life, directing it at her brother's soul.

"Oh, Great Mother," he mutters in realisation.

I hold his hands, "You have to want it. Without your help, we can't bring you back. Can you do that for me?"

He thinks for a bit, "It is nice here but... I do wanna live."

A blinding light encompasses the three of us, and I wake up near the Tree of Souls.

Shortly after the eclipse, Tsireya, Kiri and I have arrived to the same place we were in our dreams. We scout the coral field, in hope of meeting a healthy, lively Neteyam.

He is nowhere to be seen though, not even after a whole hour of waiting.

My mouth presses into a line. Where did we go wrong?

"Maybe it wasn't in Eywa's will to resurrect him," Kiri suggests.

With a sad look on our faces, we prepare to leave, when a loud voice takes us aback, "We did it!"

It's Neteyam!

He jumps to hug us, which makes us sink into the water. I playfully splash his face and our reunion soon turns into a water battle.

Everyone has been very happy and emotional to see Neteyam alive once again. His parents have thanked me over a thousand times, but I told them they should thank to Eywa.

There were celebrations, I have been welcomed to be part of the Metkayina clan, and now I am chasing fish with Neteyam.

He hasn't changed a bit.

"Hey, Mi'Niri, look over there!" he shouts.

Although I know he plans something nasty, I turn my head in the pointed direction.

"Ha- tricked you! Byeee!" he shamelessly steals my ilu and takes off.

"Wha- HEY!!" I yell, enjoying his little antics nonetheless.

Just like the old times.
