When Cian had signed up as an emergency foster home, he hadn't expected to be called upon. While he and his home had passed the inspection, he didn't think he would be much of a choice, compared to other homes. He certainly hadn't expected to be called at ten o'clock at night to be informed a young boy from an abusive home was coming to stay with him. He immediately jumped to make sure everything was ready, and he answered the door a little disheveled but still ready to handle his new guest.
On the other side of the door stood a young woman, holding onto a stack of papers and glasses perched on her face professionally. She greeted Cian with a tilt of her head and a quick glance up and down. âYou are-â She quickly glanced to her papers, âCian is that correct? Iâm sorry for disturbing you at such hours but the circumstances were rather serious.âÂ
From behind her legs, there was a pair of light green eyes, peeking from under mahogany tangled locks at the stranger whoâs door they were at, clearly full of hesitance and even traces of fear.
Her hand gently nudges him forward as she steps aside.Â
âThis is Matthew, heâll be staying with you until we assess the situation. We arenât sure how long that may be but if things do get too overwhelming you have our information.â
He seemed shorter then one would expect for an eight and a half-year-old, skin paler than most and signs of bruising on his cheek. He was wearing a faded red shirt under a not so warm jacket that seemed too big, and grey sleep pants that looked more like a tripping hazard. He didnât say hello, his eyes darting away, fingers fiddling with his sleeve.Â
âYouâll also need these.â She holds out the folder from her arms. âThese are all the current records weâve found that you may need to get to know him and assist with any fees, and if all goes accordingly you will be receiving benefits in the next few weeks for being his carer. That is if you decide to remain to be so after tonight.âÂ

Though it wasnât much the young boysâ shoulders seemed to sag softly at the answer. At least he was allowed to stay if he continued to choose to. Though he really hadnât a clue. He wasnât exactly finding one in his warm mug of tea. It was, however, soothing his insides, to the point his stomach was feeling far less like a shaken up soda can.Â
He didnât know what to say in reply, whether saying thank you were silly or unwanted, so he stayed quiet. Rubbing the mug as he glanced periodically up at the TV of which the show has changed.
At the question he took a second to click into being talked to, missing the first question entirely, but shaking his head. âY-you..dont have to.â He didnât want to make Cian feel uncomfortable or unwantedâ Matthew didnât exactly crave his company either but he didnât want to just hog the couch and living room space.Â
Despite it all he still looked very loss, trying his hardest to process, but also simply now unsure of what to do. He gently leaned forward and shakily placed the mug on the table before scootching back and pulling the blanket up closer. Eyes flickering to Cian before going back to the TV.Â
Cian couldnât help the sadness he felt looking at Matthew. He looked so lost and alone...
âI think Iâll stay here then, if thatâs okay with you,â he said softly. His heart only clenching more when Matthew curled up, wanting to just hug him and help ease his worries but knowing that it would not help.
He decided to slowly settled back into the couch, relaxed, at ease. He was content to watch cartoons, and he hoped his presence wasnât intimidating or pressuring for Matthew.
