legit the best advice i can give you: feed your friends

any time someone is in any kind of crisis or upheaval, offer to feed them. tell them they don't have to choose what it is if they can't make decisions, just ask about allergies and preferences and tell them you're just gonna make food happen at their house.

friend having a baby? delivery gift certificate to order food to the hospital after the kid shows up.

someone's relative passes away? offer to make them dinner.

buddy gets laid off? ask if you can order them lunch.

pal stuck in a depressive episode? offer to drive them to fucking mcdonalds, if that's what they want.

people in crisis are tired and sad and angry and the last thing most of them are doing is thinking about feeding themselves. so if you have the ability or time or money, providing that is always, always a good move.

legit i do this all the time, and it is 100% always appreciated. i have taught all my friends that when something happens, we feed each other. it makes people feel extremely cared for, and I cannot recommend it enough.

#tbh #especially if a close friend has a new baby #my tip is to set up a regular day every other week or so to go cook for them #and then be so so chill about it when they aren't nearly as greatful or sociable as you want them to be #and eventually - usually after about the 6 or 7 month mark #that friend will actually look up #and act like a social human person again #and be greatful for your presence and help and cooking #and most importantly #neither of you lost a friend just because they had a baby

before my egg cracked, i had noticed that trans people were often pro-accessibility and up-to-date on the needs of disabled people, but i hadn’t seen any inherent connection between the two (other than the obvious minority-looking-out-for-other-minority thing). but now that i’m trans and medically transitioning, and i have to constantly repeat myself while talking to doctors and nurses, and explain things about my own anatomy to medical staff who should already know this, and having every single problem i might have blamed on my “condition” so nothing i say is taken seriously, all of the sudden i have a little sneak peak into the life of someone who has to deal with this all the time. like shit bro, being disabled probably sucks ass, someone should do something about this

not gonna lie i increasingly just find myself thinking... what are single disabled people supposed to do? basically everything assumes that either a) you have never been independent and are fully reliant on caregivers, whether this is parents or a paid carer that you are somehow funding, or b) you have a partner who can look after you, drive you to appointments, pick you up after you've had sedation, advocate for you, be your proxy, do the housework when you're sick, push your wheelchair, be your companion when travelling (e.g. handle the luggage if you're using a wheelchair), etc

and like. first of all even for people with partners that's assuming they're abled themselves and can handle all that. you can't assume that. secondly: what about people who are single, who live alone, who will probably always do so

"get someone to keep an eye on you when you start this new medication" who. "don't over exert yourself" nobody else is going to do the tasks. "this can be a walker or a transit wheelchair so your partner can push you when you get tired" my what

like it's not a coincidence that amatonormativity discussions started / developed in care contexts because it is so often the assumption that intimate partners will fill these needs. but I feel like this is often discussed in the context of "and this is too much to ask and puts too much unpaid labour on the unqualified partner" which is not untrue and needs discussing but like. also. what about people are single, independent adults who are neither emotionally nor geographically close to their siblings etc and are not Disabled Enough to have a paid carer (a group that grows as resources shrink). like are they just fucked then. they're on their own. punishment for failing to be enough of an adult to couple up.

#Would recommend the book Care Work: Dreaming Disability Justice #but yeah HUGE issue #especially since like... idk #often if a person is relying on their partner to be an unpaid care worker #that totally fucks with their relationship and power dynamic #and then if their partner gets burnt out and leaves the disabled person is once again single and still in need of care #like idk dude #I think there's maybe something to be said for intentional communities in this space #like for me it's my place of worship but it doesn't have to be in a religious context necessarily #where like yeah #I do have a friend who's disability requires a LOT of doctors appointments #and he's single and can't drive #but he puts his appointments in the group chat and we take turns getting him there - and going in to be medical advocates if he requests it #I have another friend who struggles with feeding themselves due to autism sensory stuff #so I go to their house once a week #and I make the exact same dish each time that I know they'll eat - but hey it has vegetables in it #and maybe that doesn't solve the issue entirely #but it's one day a week they don't have to use up their limited spoons on planning and making a safe meal #I have another friend who has adhd and sometimes they just ask me to text them reminders of stuff and I do #and notably this is not just me doing stuff out of the goodness of my heart #these same people will help me proof read things because my dyslexia is too much for spell check #and they'll patiently put up with whatever ocd freak out I'm having this week #and like #unfortunately I do think the only solution outside of real and intense structural changes in how we provide disability supports #which could take decades to accomplish #is to be in community - usually with other disabled people - who will take turns mutually caring for each other #and putting that type of support network together and maintaining it is a HUGE amount of work #especially for a demographic that almost always has smaller social networks than abled people #so like idk...#truly no solution that doesn't put the burden of change on already stressed disabled people
