↠ A fellow who appeared fleetingly during a nightmare- his image flashed for several seconds before I woke up, feeling like I’d just been barred from some form of absolute destruction. Before the image could entirely disappear, I typed out a tiny prompt in order to jog my memory:
king. gold. fire. dragon.
Grief to joy, and love to hate-
pain to pleasure, and starve to sate-
upon her wings, all things equate.

↠ An original character concept illustration- one inspired in equal measure by music, gender disparity, and folkloric influence.
Neither a harbinger of misfortune nor windfalls, her impartial nature seeks only to bear witness to the earth’s continued unfolding.
The dragon does not cut through the current- it becomes it, instead- weaving through mountain and shoreline, thus pushing forth and guiding the valorous with gentle radiance.

↠ This initially started as a scrappy photo study on a much larger canvas, but I suppose my love for the character inspired the reckless drive to try and formulate a more complete portrait attempt.
If there's a single HSR character who's jumped rapidly into my top three, it's Dan Heng- between the Quintet's complex history and his Permansor reforge…he's just so wonderfully enigmatic.

↠ I'm exceptionally late to the party, but…merfolk AU fanart is still cool, right?
I've been leaning heavily into my deep love for muted, subdued visuals as of late- as a direct result, I generally dulled things down in an effort to emanate a hazy, folkloric, grounded sort of tone- I'm not really sure how much that actually comes across, but…eh. I tried. I also referenced moray eels and oarfish to try and more abstractly elude to Neuvillette's crowned status as the Hydro Sovereign.
Note- although I did reference myself for the pose, I also roughly eyeballed John William Waterhouse's painting, 'A Mermaid'- purely for the anatomy baseline.

A formidable negotiator, decisive combatant, and a name which sows equal parts reverence and trepidation.
Phainon- or, in certain close circles, Khaslana- serves as the young, but undisputed captain of the frigate ship 'Dawnmaker,' commanding her crew with an unerringly disciplined hand.
Seemingly branded by the very sun itself, his eyes- one tempestuous, one blazing- elude to whispers of some kind of 'divine fate', as does his blood- for it seeps from his flesh with the same gilded hues as those great gods of antiquity.
♪ -𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘶𝘯 / 𝘵𝘸𝘰 𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘱𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘭.

𝓕𝓲𝓰 𝒾. - Phainon sports an expansive, roughly-healed brand on his right side, arcing over his shoulder and up his neck. It seems to resemble the sigil of Amphoreus's 'Worldbearing' god, but whenever accosted with questions about it, he categorically refuses to offer an explanation. As such, it's unknown how a mark of faith came to sear his decidedly faithless, piracy-bound body.
𝓕𝓲𝓰 𝒾𝒾. - His sword, dubbed 'Sol Invictus' (lit. unconquered sun,) is an antique naval rapier. In the design phase, I wanted to include three distinct shapes within its silhouette: Kephale's sigil (to effectively tie things back to the HSR canon), the form of a frigate ship's sail, and a circular arc to reference a helm, or alternatively, a compass.
𝐸𝓍𝓉𝓇𝒶 𝐿𝑜𝓇𝑒- Phainon leads with an odd, mercurial binding of youthful warmth and cold resolve. His bearings can be wholly involved one moment, before turning suddenly detached the next- as such, it's impossible to definitively glean how his mind operates.
According to whispers forged from intercepted letters penned to allies, despite his powerful presence, he harbors intensely personal, unspoken doubts.
↳ To quote Anaxagorus- the Dawnmaker's former captain and current long-term Quartermaster: "I do not fear often. Really, these days there's little which could be nominated as important enough to garner my interest. Yet, regarding our young captain, I do indeed fear what he could steel himself to become. The capacity for violence versus the formulation of a violent man…alas, I cannot help but dread this gossamer line has long begun to irreparably blur.
For the first time in my life…by Cerces, I beg that I'm proven wrong."

↠ So...this is something that I've been chipping away at for a while- I blame the fact that I finally started watching Black Sails. Thanks to that, pirates and seafaring have been on the brain quite a bit, as of late. Genuinely though, this was an absolute blast to conceptualize, illustrate, and write- it's a lot, I know, but I'm pretty proud of the final result! ~

↠ Technically this is from over a year ago, but I did some small touch-ups, so...better late then never, I suppose? I snapped the photo while walking to class (just on my phone, nothing fancy), and on a very low day, this kind fellow simply materialized into my mind and memory.
'Conflict until death is your cyclic existence- yet even though it brings forth such terrifying ambiguity…you still choose to challenge the very fabric of destiny.
Alas, my valiant lion- although I cannot shatter these cosmic chains of fate… I truly pray that in some semblance…your burning fervor just might.'

AFTER ALMOST A FUCKING YEAR OF FAILED WORKS, I'VE FINALLY MANAGED TO DRAW MYDEI SEMI-DECENTLY (I hope). I'M LEGIT GONNA CRY. I wish this was hyperbole, but it’s taken an egregious amount of tries to even capture a vague semblance of his character.
Note- this features an npc redesign that I did last year of Chryseus Leo, the statue that Mydei briefly speaks to during the first visit to Castrum Kremnos. If y'all want to see that design sheet, I can post it- so feel free to let me know.

↠ Mydei as a character is one that feels unfairly simplified or dulled by some people in the fanbase- a controversial take, perhaps, but it's one I stand by. I don't understand how people can boil him down to just a list of stereotypes- it's shown throughout the course of the story that not only is he sharp, controlled, and intuitive, he's easily one of the most emotionally and mentally stable Chrysos Heirs. When truly needed, he also doesn’t tend to hold back on his kindness, albeit in his own way.
Consider: he's died countless times, had to grapple with being unduly hated, punished and unwanted by both his father and his people, lost everything as a fault of his own fucking birth, and slowly witnessed the destruction of his dearest friends. Like Phainon- who suffers from the 'puppy-dog/golden retriever/unserious' tropes- he's multilayered, complex, and nuanced- and I hope that I've been able to capture even a tenth of that beautiful complexity within this piece.
Just as much as Phai, he's a character who's going to stick with me forever.
Oh, also- in terms of art techniques worth sharing- turning on the greyscale colour filter while working on this helped with rendering values for his body immensely. Honestly, I can't believe it's taken me this damn long to realize that's even a thing...I felt like an idiot when I finally discovered it.

- An enigmatic, firm, yet gentle sphinx who holds dominion over the Seminary Anima- or, informally, the Seminary [of the] Soul. Due to it resting outside the confines of the Four Cardinal's Path, the Central Divination Council- and thus, the 'High Branch'- hold no power or sway over her beliefs, decisions, and cultural practices.
Her influence became the sole catalyst for Avksha's famous dissolution and dissension with the Council's views, upon the finalization of his Seer’s pilgrimage. Ever since, she's become a safe haven for his mind and spirit.
The two are not unlike ageless platonic companions- they guide each other's meditation and ruminations, even while resting thousands of miles apart.

Quick design notes-
Her movements and gait are elegant and poised- she tends to balance on her toes.
Her hair and pelt are lush and soft, rippling and swaying in an almost dreamlike fashion.
Her pupil-less eyes reflect a calm sea lit by a brilliantly gold sunset- despite this, her vision is entirely unaffected.
Her ear-tips are always dipped in gold.
Her voice is dulcet and slightly low in pitch, carrying little in way of inflection.
She is approximately 9ft (2.7432 m) tall at the shoulder, not counting her wings.
Her wingspan is around 25ft (7.62 m) at full breadth, and can facilitate flight (NOTE- I did not account for this in the refsheet- I wanted to merely portray a stylized version of her).

↠ This new brush discovery of mine has certainly opened up the potential of doing a LOT of Ōkami fanart in the near future! I've never felt 100% solid with my style fitting the characters, but I think this is giving me a good bridge to re-attempt some illustration ideas I've been holding onto for years~ Forever my favourite game of all time!
I've always adored the Canine Warriors- particularly, Canine Warrior Tei. I think part of it is the unique 'brotherhood' symbolism he carries, alongside being a breed of dog that's both beautiful, and a little bit obscure. Tosa are absolutely magnificent- I've gotten the opportunity to meet one in person, and they have such a regal carriage to them~

Her steps are pounding thunderclaps, shattering waves, crescendos of war-drums.
Her mournful calls echo broken laments, battle-cries of ferocity, and stirring monologues of resilience."

↠ I suppose this is some sort of intent focus on the abstract concepts of Phainon’s character, versus the tangible ones. Kind of like a visual study of the soul, versus the body?
In terms of artistic choices, there’s a few- I don’t love the ult form leaks that I’ve seen, and wanted to try and ground the overall aesthetic to feel more realistic, while still maintaining some of the core design elements.
For the halos in particular, I shifted them back from the head so they’d crown his shoulders- it’s a bit obscure, but I wanted to reference his ‘worldbearing’ title, and mirror the visual of Kephale carrying the earth.
