      THEY’RE  OUT  WALKING  HOME  a  little  later  than  they  usually  would  be .  perhaps  that  was  their  initial  mistake .  though  to  be  fair  they  hadn’t  expected  their  phantom  thieves  meeting  to  run  so  late .  but  who  can  ever  predict  the  stupid  fights  morgana  &  ryuji  always  somehow  manage  to  get  into  (  well  they  can  predict  them  to  surely  happen  but  the  length  time  always  varies  )  therefore  it’s  already  past  sunset  as  they  start  heading  out  towards  the  train  station .

      IT’S  NOT  AN  UNCOMMON  thing  to  hate  walking  around  at  night ,  especially  if  you’re  a  woman .  however  kairi  especially  hates  walking  around  at  night .  tokyo  has  never  been  a  super  safe  place  to  be  in  even  during  the  daytime .  despite  her  dislike  for  admitting  so ,  kairi  is  smaller  than  the  average  person  &  therefore  an  easy  target  for  anyone  wishing  to  do  harm .  since  moving  to  yongen - jaya  she  prefers  to  not  walk  alone  at  night  if  she  can  help  it .  thankfully  tonight  she’s  not  walking  alone . 

      KAIRI’S  GAZE  SHIFTS  to  the  taller  boy  walking  beside  her .  akira  may  not  realize  it  but  he  greatly  improves  the  state  of  kairi’s  anxiety  whilst  walking  to  the  station .  she  doesn’t  know  how  to  properly  say  how  grateful  she  is  to  have  him  around  when  walking  home  every  day .  the  previous  year  &  her  few  years  in  middle  school  kairi  had  found  herself  frequently  walking  alone  in  hopes  to  get  away  from  the  other  foster  children  living  with  her .  she’s  glad  that  now  she  can  have  his  company  when  walking  home  so  she  doesn’t  have  to  be  by  herself .

      THOUGH  KAIRI  ENJOYS  AKIRA’S  company in  general .  she  always  has .  there’s  something  about  him  that  always  makes  her  feel  safe .  this  is  incredibly  ironic  however  considering  his  reputation  at  school  for  being  a  dangerous  criminal .  not  that  she  ever  really  believed  these  rumors .  though  that  was  simply  fate .  maybe  they  were  destined  to  meet  as  every  day  kairi  feels  as  if  he’s  the  missing  piece  she’s  been  waiting  for  all  this  time .  she  wonders  if  he  feels  the  same  way  —  probably  not .  

      FOR  ONCE  SHE’S  GRATEFUL  for  the  darkness  surrounding  them  as  it’s  easier  to  sneak  glances  at  him  without  being  caught  or  questioned .  however  she  wonders  if  he  knows  what  she’s  doing  for  at  one  point  he  turns  his  head  the  exact  time  she  tries  to  steal  another  look  at  him .  though  maybe  he’d  also  been  trying  to  discreetly  look  at  her  too  but  their  timing  had  been  inopportune .  they  both  quickly  turn  away  &  kairi  finds  herself  grateful  once  more  for  the  darkness  as  she  feels  a  blush  rising  to  her  cheeks .

      THERE’S  A  SILENCE  between  them  then  &  kairi  wonders  if  he  feels  as  embarrassed  as  she  does .  she  really  has  no  reason  to  feel  this  way .  isn’t  it  normal  to  look  at  your  friends ?  &  it’s  totally  normal  to  feel  butterflies  in  your  stomach  when  your  friend  looks  at  you .  doesn’t  matter  if  your  friend  is  handsome,  nice  &  fun  to  be  around  —  it’s  normal  to  always  want  to  be  around  your  friends  right ?

      SHE  FEELS  THE  NEED  to  say  something .  something  to  break  this  weird  tension  she’s  feeling  with  them  &  with  herself .  maybe  she  just  wants  to  assure  herself  that  whatever  has  been  going  on  between  them  is  normal  &  not  to  be  fussed  about .  however  before  she  can  get  a  word  out  she  feels  a  hand  grip  her  long  red  hair  before  yanking  her  backwards  into  a  halt .

    KAIRI  INSTANTLY  CRIES  OUT  in  pain  as  her  her  hands  fly  to  the  back  of  her  head  in  attempt  to  free  herself  from  the  stranger’s  grip .  however  their  hold  on  her  is  unrelenting  as  they  only  tighten  their  grip  on  her  before  pulling  her  to  meet  them .  when  the  person  speaks  she  recognizes  her  assailant  instantly  as  one  of  the  other  foster  children  who’d  been  living  with  her  for  the  past  several  years .  he  had  been  low  enough  in  the  ranks  of  their  little  group  that  the  change  of  heart  hadn’t  really  effected  him  save  for  losing  his  street  cred .  perhaps  that’s  why  he’s  decided  to  come  after  her  now .  

      SHE  FEELS  HIS  HOT ,  FOUL  SMELLING  breath  on  her  neck ,  flinching  as  he  whispers  into  her  ear .  “    scream  again  &  i’ll  snap  your  neck .    ”  her  blood  runs  cold  as  she  processes  the  threat ,  unsure  if  whether  or  not  he’s  bluffing  or  not .  she  decides  to  not  chance  it  &  goes  silent  as  she  tries  to  come  up  with  a  plan  to  get  herself  out  of  this  situation  without  him  letting  on .  

      HOWEVER  SHE  SOON  FINDS  she  doesn’t  need  to  as  seemingly  out  of  nowhere  akira  appears  &  throws  a  swift  punch  to  the  other  boy’s  face ,  giving  kairi  enough  leeway  to  free  herself  from  his  threatening  grip .  however  he  doesn’t  stop  there  as  he  throws  a  second  punch ,  this  time  to  the  other’s  stomach .  he’s  about  to  unleash  a  third  when  kairi  reaches  forward  &  takes  his  hand .  ❛    stop ,  he’s  not  worth  it .    ❜  she  whispers ,  a  plea  made  not  for  the  sake  of  her  attacker  but  for  akira .  ❛    i  don’t  want  to  risk  the  chance  of  you  getting  into  trouble .    ❜

      HE  NODS  &  BEGINS  TO  lead  her  by  the  hand  in  the  direction  of  the  station .  however  kairi  pulls  away  from  his  grasp  momentarily  to  give  her  assailant  one  finishing  blow ,  a  ruthless  kick  to  the  stomach ,  knocking  him  over  completely  as  she  take’s  akira’s  hand  once  more  &  begins  to  run .  she  shouldn’t  have  done  that  &  it’s  likely  to  come  back  to  her  in  some  unpleasant  form .  but  it  felt  good .  

      HER  BREATH  IS  RAGGED  &  uneven  when  they  finally  slow  down  just  a  block  or  two  from  the  station .  yet  even  still  as  they’ve  come  to  an  almost  complete  halt  she  finds  herself  unable  to  tear  her  hand  away  from  his .  something  about  it  brings  her  unbelievable  comfort  she  thought  she’d  never  feel  again .  her  heart  is  racing  though  she’s  unsure  of  whether  that’s  due  to  the  adrenaline  or  because  she’s  just  caught  him  looking  at  her  again .

      “  ARE  YOU  OKAY ?    ”  akira  asks  &  kairi  suddenly  notices  the  distress  &  worry  in  his  dark  eyes .  “  i’m  sorry  for  causing  a  scene  but  i  couldn’t  just  stand  there  &  let  him  hurt  you .    ”  he  opens  his  mouth  to  say  something  else  but  is  quickly  stopped  when  kairi  takes  his  face  in  her  hands  &  pulls  him  into  a  kiss .

      SHE  DOESN’T  KNOW  why  she  does  it  initially .  maybe  it’s  the  adrenaline  or  the  need  to  thank  him  without  words .  or  maybe  just  maybe  there’s  always  been  a  reason  for  the  constant  butterflies  in  her  stomach  whenever  he’s  around .  maybe  she’s  always  known  this  &  instead  chose  to  be  in  denial  rather  than  face  the  truth .  maybe  she  turned  out  caring  for  him  more  than  she’d  originally  planned .

      THE  KISS  IS  INTENSE but  brief  as  she  soon  pulls  away  before  uttering  a  breathy  apology .  ❛    i’m  sorry  —  i  don’t  know  what  came  over  me  i …    ❜  she’s  cut  short  when  akira  lets  out  a  laugh ,  further  embarrassing  her  yet  delighting  her  at  the  same  time .  she’s  always  liked  his  laugh .  

      AFTER  A  MOMENT  he  stops  laughing  though  still  she  can  see  an  smug  smile  on  his  face  in  the  darkness .  “    you  know …    ”  he  starts  &  kairi  can  hear  the  amusement  in  his  voice  with  each  word ,  “    there’s  better  ways  to  confess  your  love  for  me .    ” 

      OH ,  SHE  HATES  HIM .  he  just  had  to  make  a  stupid  joke  after  everything .  he  just  couldn’t  make  this  easy  huh ?  she  feels  her  face  heat  up  in  both  embarrassment  &  anger  as  she  begins  to  walks  away  from  him  haughtily .  as  she  walks  off  she  she  speaks ,  refusing  to  look  back  at  him  as  she  waves  her  hands  in  the  air .  ❛    never  mind  i  take  it  back .  i  absolutely  want  nothing  to  do  with  you .  ❜

      AKIRA  SEEMS  TO  HAVE  called  her  bluff  as  he  laughs  again  as  he  hurries  to  catch  up  with  her .  “    you  can’t  take  it  back !  you  can’t  take  a  kiss  back !  it’s  here  it’s  in  the  world  now  &  there’s  nothing  you  can  do  about  it .    ”
