these get reposted a whole lot from here to reddit to twitter to tiktok and on and on, and i don't personally care whether or not i'm credited. i made these for everyone to use, enjoy, and find meaning in them. i appreciate folks who do credit me, but if able, please at least link to the threadless shop in the previous post - folks can get an official shirt where 90% of earnings go to trans led orgs focused on mental health (which is an important matter in general, but very personal to me) and not from a scam bot site selling AI-churned maga garbage where you probably won't get one anyway. i also suggest downloading the files from my ko-fi - they are free/PWYW and you can use them to make your own shirt, patch, embroidery project, whatever. tips are always nice, cuz i do like a pizza now and then, but never required for download.

Plenty of folks that are dirt poor have houses. Houses they struggled to get into and will owe on for the next 30+ years of their lives, because they want their kids to have a yard to play in, or because a house was actually cheaper per month than rent in their area, or because they wanted that ‘American dream’ everyone’s been force fed for the last 100 years. “House Poor” is a term for a reason…

Regardless, certainly the majority of people who have houses wouldn’t ’make a million dollars’ if they were forced to move. That’s just ignorant fantasy talk. Most homes aren’t even valued at $1 million, much less earning PROFIT that high.

And most people really affected by property tax increases DON’T have expensive houses because, fun fact, property taxes aren’t always calculated on home value. My state, for example, charges per square foot of all buildings on the property. House, carport, storage shed, cobbled together greenhouse to grow some veggies in…. If they can justify that it’s a “building”, they tax it. No matter how fancy or how dilapidated or leaking through the roof it is.

So the households struggling to make $40k a year get charged just as much as someone sitting pretty earning $350k.

The state can raise property taxes whenever they choose. And it can affect EVERYONE who owns property. Millionaires AND poor struggling families alike. And some folks are living so close to the edge of their means because the cost of living just keeps going up and up and up…. that that increase on the whim of the state pushes them past what they can literally afford to pay if they want to also eat. (I again urge you to look up what ‘House Poor’ means.)

That is a real thing that happens to real people. Not hyperbole.

Poor folks that did nothing wrong. Except for the crime of choosing to live in a house apparently, which makes them bad and clearly all actually rich people who should “pay your taxes and shut up” according to some…

Again hun, your fight should be with the actual people that are the actual problem in this world, not just being angry online at everyone who dares to live in a house instead of renting…

This is why I oppose outright removing property taxes but support reforms to homestead exemption so it scales with increased home values/inflation. Homestead exemption helps lower and middle class people stay in their homes (and afford to own in the first place) while the wealthy or landlords or vacation home owners still pay their fair share. It allows an amount of untaxed property in the form of the home you own and live in. Anything above a certain appraised value or any additional properties are taxed. So the person who barely owns a trailer pays little to nothing. The person who owns a mid-range home pays a little. The person who owns a McMansion pays more. The person who owns multiple properties pays more.
