revolutionary girl utena/slay the princess- the damsel
When I was younger i got trapped in a painting and fell in love with a boy. I'm not sure how I "returned" if I ever actually did to the world I belonged to. On the train I think I saw him again? But I don't recall his face
I suppose it doesn't really matter now if you returned or didn't, does it? i hope one day you can meet your boy again

Climate change is a hot topic again (no pun intended) so I want to talk about something that bothers me in some western environmentalist discussions--lack of awareness of pollution outsourcing, and a general tendency to see western countries as "trying harder" to combat climate change for their own regulations, when in reality they export their pollution and have simply moved operations. This is a similar situation to labor rights, but a lot more people are aware of outsourcing when it comes to cheap labor than pollution.
You can find a variety of studies on this topic, I'm going to link some here.
This study addresses the argument: "democracies are more environmentally friendly". "Democracy" in this context is referring to primarily wealthy liberal democracies. Although I have problems with essentially every mainstream method of calculating democracy (lol...) the study still proves the issue of pollution outsourcing:
We hypothesize that democracies can improve their record and become āgreenerā not only through genuinely domestic environmental protection, but also through outsourcing environmental impacts of their consumption to other countries. Analyzing data on greenhouse gas emissions, pollution offshoring, and democracy for more than 160 countries since the 1990s, we report evidence that the offshoring of environmental pollution contributes to the superior environmental record of democracies. The main policy implication is that democracies, per se, may not have a better environmental record than autocracies when considering global environmental impacts. This implies that democratic countries, in particular, should re-orient their environmental protection efforts from merely domestic to global environmental consequences of local economic activity.
For the record, the above study uses the V-Dem dataset for "democracy". If you choose to look that up, it looks about how you'd expect: US, UK, Western Europe, Australia, and Japan are perpetually in the freedom democracy zone for the most part each year.
The New York Times posted an article on pollution outsourcing in 2018 that includes some studies:
The United States, for its part, remains the worldās leading importer of what the researchers call āembodied carbon.ā If the United States were held responsible for all the pollution worldwide that resulted from manufacturing the cars, clothing and other goods that Americans use, the nationās carbon dioxide emissions would be 14 percent bigger than its domestic-only numbers suggest.
Between 1995 and 2015, the report found, as wealthier countries like Japan and Germany were cutting their own emissions, they were also doubling or tripling the amount of carbon dioxide they outsourced to China.
But when I say "pollution outsourcing" I am not exclusively referring to carbon emissions. I mean literally all forms of pollution are being outsourced. From Waste Colonialism: A Brief History:
Exporting trash involves more than just environmental harm; it reflects systemic inequality and a historical pattern of exploitation. The term draws a direct line between historical colonialism, where natural resources and labor were stripped from colonized regions, and the current waste trade, where the burden of environmental damage is once again pushed onto those least responsible for it.
The logic is elementary: when consumption ā primarily of plastic ā continues to rise, there are only two solutions to eliminate the waste: incineration or dumping. Incineration becomes the only plausible alternative if a country does not allow large-scale dumping within its borders. The problem? Incinerating plastic carries a significant carbon footprint, which most countries responsible for plastic waste are trying to reduce. As a result, some choose to avoid both options and instead export their waste elsewhere, preferably to a country with weaker waste regulations.
For years, high-income countries, especially across Europe, in the US, Japan, and Australia, have been exporting plastic waste abroad under the claim that it will be recycled, but the reality is far more complex. A report by the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) published last year revealed that in 2023, the Netherlands, Germany, the UK, Belgium, France, Italy, the US, Japan, and Australia were among the top waste exporters to non-OECD countries.
For over 20 years, China was the worldās biggest importer of plastic and other waste. Since it lacked local resources, starting in the 1980sā90s, the country accepted trash from richer countries to use as raw materials for its industries. However, this mechanism led to serious pollution, health risks and illegal dumping in the country. In 2018 China banned the import of plastic waste with its National Sword Policy. Since then, Western countries have been redirecting their exports to other parts of Asia and Africa. Countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines have taken up much of the imports, many arriving illegally or misdeclared. As for Africa, Ghana is slowly becoming a dumping ground, and Mexico and Peru in Latin America are following its steps.
Worth noting a lot of countries dealing with outsourced pollution are also in a position to feel the most severe effects of climate change first. I'm sure a lot of you are already aware of this information, but it bears repeating right now...and ensure you aren't contributing to racist narratives in discussions about the environment...the right does pick up on this topic and has its own approaches.
I actually think the lack of race politics is probably the weakest factor in rgu (as well as the fandom) bc like. the dynamics of patriarchy are in fact inextricable from the logic of colonialism in many ways? and so it makes me feel crazy that everyone in ohtori is always like āletās kill the one brown girl we know with knives for no reasonā and then nary a single fan is like āthis is surely not motivated by any sort of visual signifier of alterity that she may be assigned by a racializing gazeā and in fact some of them are even like āeveryone who wants to kill her is right for that probably bc sheās evilā
thats because rgu's race politics is frankly bad and orientalist, see nanami goes to india to find spices episode. it is racist in a way that sort of beggars belief that the show actually intends to say something coherent about racialisation instead of just uh assigning the incestual sexual violence to the brown people in the show.
So I missed episodes 1-3 of Utena and im catching up now and damn Utena literally accidentally became a slaveowner by trying to fight for her bestieās honor wtf
Again asking how in all the utenaposting Iāve seen for years the slavery is almost never mentioned. Anthy is first shown getting her ass beat by her āmasterā and then later is shown scrubbing rooms clean as one of the only darkskinned characters and thatās like 2 episodes in
Slavery really just doesnāt register to whites on the same level huh
Also to be clear - this is a very intentional and reoccurring theming in this. Itās not happenstance itās VERY explicit which makes the fact Iāve seen so little about it absolutely unhinged to me. Iāve only been through 6 episodes total so far and I cannot imagine discussing this beyond quips without the slavery being a huge factor bc it colors everything in a different light
Like the themes of assault/sexual assault arenāt just that of a woman, but of an enslaved woman. Themes of ensuring an enslaved, darker-skinned woman, knows and remembers āher placeā when seen to be reaching above her station solely by existing and being owned. Just.
Unironically I wouldāve watched this years ago if literally any of this came up it besides āomg lesbian trans-coded animeā
Thereās a bunch of people in my notes every time Iām utenaposting about āoh well *I* knew this and so does everyone else i know that watched it, itās so obviousā meanwhile most of the POC Iāve talked to say they had the same experience of not knowing Utena was strongly about slavery until they watched it bc they never saw (white) queer utena fans talking about it, or not knowing it was a theme until I posted about it despite seeing people post about RGU for years
So like yeag itās obvious but one of us lyin here and Iām gonna guess it aināt me and other queers of color
I need you to understand that while slavery in the US was/is of Black folks, and still exists in the US in multiple forms, there's also modern slavery of not just Black people, but Asian people as wellāone example being of Filipinos both within The Philippines and abroad.
Like while im making comparison to Black experience because I'm Black, I'm still reading Anthy as Indian AND as a slave because she is.
An important contextual note is that *Japan was also a colonial empire that focused its subjugation towards other Asians*. A bunch of Japanese and white/mixed folks treating Anthy. that way at a British-inspired Japanese boarding school isn't exactly a novel concept!
Subjugation of "lesser Asians" was(/is) a huge fucking thing!
lunno it's just wild to me to see people act like she'd have to be Black to be a slave when it's still a global issue.

Today marks 30 years since the beginning of Srebrenica genocide when from 11th July 1995 until the end of the month 8372 men and boys were brutally murdered, buried, unburied, moved, buried again and moved to the tertiary mass graves by the Serb nationalists after the UN soldiers let them walk in into the "safe zone" they were "protecting" full of refugees. Around 15000 men didn't want to wait to be executed embarking on a 100km long ourney through the forests to get to the nearest unocupied area. 8372 were slaughtered.
Today 7 victims will be buried, one of the victims will have only 2 jaw bones laid down in the ground because those 2 bones are the only bones that have been found. Many mothers, sisters, daughters, are still searching, hoping for even one bone to be found.
As some perpetrators rot away in prison serving life sentences, and Srebrenica remains the worst wound in post-WW2 history, as genocide denial keeps coming from certains politicians both in Bosnia and Serbia and denial is a participation in that genocide, and as UN keeps apologizing every year for their failure to protect the people, as thousands survivors, children of the murdered, and people from all around the world gather every year to take a walk through those very forests, walking those same paths to honor the victims on a Peace march, and thousands gather on 11th July in PotoÄari to honor the victims, I can't help but think how in 30 years the reality of mothers of Srebrenica will also be the reality of people of Gaza.
So please, read about what happened in Srebrenica (it has to be undrestood in the broader context of Bosnian genocide) and try to help in any way you can to the people of Gaza today. The youngest victim in Srebrenica was just a few hours old. We have been watching the same events unfold in Gaza for too long now. Srebrenica massacre wasn't silent either, Europe just didn't want to hear it.
Here is the web page of the Memorial Center where you can read about the timeline of the events in July 1995, about the aftermath, investigations and the trials of the perpetrators.
United Nations also have a page dedicated which is almost a joke considering they abandoned those people... where you can find some useful videos and a very comprehensive timeline of the events with videos from July 1995 and from the trials in Hague.
Another useful website where I recomend reading survivors' stories
Some documentaries are available on youtube, please watch at least the first one: 1 2 3
Last year UN finally adopted a Resultion on Srebrenica Genocide. On the table before, it did not pass because of Russia's veto. Controversial president of Serbia who is fighting tooth and nail to supress students and the whole country really rising against him (as they should) argued and keeps telling his people that the text is calling out their entire nation as being genocidal. It is not. It is directed at those who did commit genocide, but the denial of the text and offense of people in Serbia starting with their politicians can be read as a denial and therefore participation in the genocide. I hope the students protesting the regime, young people like me, are willing to move forward in peace understanding that no one is blaming them for anything but that it is their burden to learn and it is their burden to break out of the spiral of evil and crime of the regime.
Here is what NY Times wrote today, 30 years later.
Finally, every year Srebrenica Inferno is performed at PotoÄari. Even if the text is in Bosnian language I believe the chilling pain will still reach you. Here is a performance from 2023
Once again, I hope everyone can find a way to think and help the people of Gaza because this will be their reality in 30 years. It is their reality now. It's fascinating that we, meaning human species, haven't yet learned that you can't make a nation on the backs and suffering of another. You can't build a happy future with the blood of thousands.
i dont think its a "sin" to "destroy and betray yourself for nothing" because there's no such thing as sin, there's no such thing as yourself and there's no such thing as nothing. and destruction and betrayal are subjective. you're most likely totally fine.
