she didn’t notice him at first , too focused on thanking the barista for not charging her for the refill even though she left what she would have had to pay in the tip jar at the register . as she turned around , she thought she saw him out of the corner of her eye, but it couldn’t have been him — it shouldn’t have been him . she told herself not to look twice , that even if it was him she didn’t want to see him ; but of course , her curiosity got the best of her . eyes remained shut as she pivoted her steps , chest rising and falling with a deep breath before opening her eyes and — thank god it wasn’t him , that time . she was flooded with a wave of relief , too excited to turn around and go back to her seat that she didn’t realize she was in someone’s way , bodies colliding together and sending grace’s drink spilling all over her chest . “ oh my god — i’m so sorry “ she still hadn’t looked up to see who it was she had just apologizing to ; and by the time she did , she wished she hadn’t .“ gio ?! “ . she yelled his name out faster than she could even process that it was him , feelings similar to nausea immediately rising to her throat and making it hard for her to swallow . what was he doing here ? how long had been here ? why didn’t he think to call her ? you’d think she’d seen a ghost , so startled by his presence she barely noticed the mug she was holding slip out of her hand and shatter across the floor beneath them . “ what are you doing here ? “ she’s breathless , barely able to even fathom the fact that he’s standing in front of her , let alone that she’s talking to him . “ i thought we — “ she pauses , there was no ‘we’ anymore , “ i thought you were staying in stanford ? “ ( @giovittorio )
coming to sunset hadn’t been on giovanni’s agenda . in fact , it’d been so far down on that list that it had never been a second thought on his mind . but things happen , plans get changed , and somehow a change in plans led him to a home in the quaint little town — and the consequences had been lost on him .
the collision had him act quick on his feet . hands reach out to steady whoever had crashed into him before his eyes took the chance to look at who it was . and then they do , and he freezes . hearing grace’s voice sends a chill down his spine , his stomach twists the moment he hears his name fall from her lips just as he cringes from her volume . “ you should really learn to be more careful , ” he says without giving a second thought to the words leaving his own mouth . it didn’t come out snarky , honestly , he wasn’t even sure himself of what his tone was . shocked and surprised ? an attempt at making light of the situation before any real situation started ? he almost doesn’t realize that he’s still holding onto her arms and when he does his drop to his sides — his fingers flex and all he can’t think for that second is ‘ i missed touching her ’ . at first gio doesn’t know how to answer her . and in the end he doesn’t , he can’t . and when the mug falls to the floor with a startling crash his mind is swept clean of any good answer . because he knows , with how his stomach keeps twisting into knots , that there is no good answer . “ things kind of , uh — ” words had never been this hard with grace before . he finds himself bending down to start places pieces of the shattered mug on his palm to avoid seeing the way she’s looking at him . “ i needed to get away . to get some fresh air for awhile in some place new . i didn’t know you were still here . ” he can’t help himself from letting his eyes slowly move back up to look at her . with her being right there , her eyes already on him , he stops feeling like everyone else was watching them . because her gaze had more weight behind it than a thousand pairs staring down on him . “ we should get you cleaned up . i don’t think you want to walk around with coffee streaked down your shirt . ” he says it suddenly , like a cut off , while he stands up straight again . there’s a second in which his hand ( the one now free of thrown away broken ceramic pieces ) raises , just barely , like he wants to grab hers but it drops just as quickly . it’s probably best that he doesn’t and instead his hand finds itself placed on the small of her back to lead her to the restroom .
“ didn’t waste any time , did you ? ” a sly jab is paired with an even slier grin as his door widens open . he leans himself against the doorframe , arms crossed over his chest , his head tilted with an ever - so amused look spread across his face . “ are you gonna sit there and stare at me or are you gonna come inside ? you’re acting like this is out of character for you . ” standing upright now and shuffling a step to the side , gio lifts a hand to gesture towards the inside of his home . between his comment , the gesture , and the expression he was sporting that all but said ‘ hurry up ’ , he wasn’t sure how else he’d get merrick’s stubborn ass inside . “ it’s been a while , ” the front door pushes shut as he speaks , “ you sure you weren’t missing me ? ”

giovanni vittorio . a classic case of a spoiled rich boy who’s never had to work a day of real , true hard work a day in his life .
the oldest , the favorite .
born as the first son , the first child of the vittorio family , everything has been handed to giovanni on a freshly shined silver platter . his parents , especially his mother ( as mothers do ) adored him from the moment they finally laid eyes on him . from day one he got everything and anything he could ever want — and when his sibling came along , his only younger sister , the spoiling his parents did of him didn’t cease .
his his father’s side of the family had immigrated to north america from italy to start a fresh life . their family has always been full of hard workers and that’s led the vittorio family to have the legacy around its name that it did .
despite his father being a well - known , well respected and successful business man , giovanni didn’t know the first thing about what his father did for a living . he didn’t question the hand that fed him or how money seemed like it would never run dry .
all he focused on was his own personal life , not his father’s .
gio only attended private schools growing up . prestige private schools . ever heard of the harvard - westlake schools ? i feel like that says enough about his school life .
he was always a good student . always . there was never a class he got less than an A in , he was a straight A student throughout middle and high school . he loved school and he loved to learn . but it was never the full challenge he was looking for .
needing some sort of challenge led him to taking up sports in school . he tried out most of them : soccer , baseball , track , even lacrosse , but he found his love of basketball and played it all throughout high school . even got offered full ride scholarships from a handful ( that’s being modest ) of universities across the nation . but after high school he stopped playing .
eventually , as he grew older , his father took to teaching him the ‘ family business ‘ as you could put it . straight out of high school , before he even started his first year of college , his father put him to work at his prideful company . he learned everything there was to running a company as heavily rooted into the industrial world .
it took until he was graduated from college , with a master’s degree under his belt ( still having worked at his father’s company as he earned his degree’s ) , that he decided that he needed a break from the soul sucking business life .
so he decided to take a short hiatus in none other than sunset hills , ca .
now here he is , slowly falling in love with the life he’s accidentally started building in this cute town .

one thing about giovanni : he’s full of himself .
he’s confident , headstrong , more than sure of what he’s capable of and he lets himself get cocky because of it .
he grew up getting everything he wanted just because he asked so of course , even as an adult now , he’s still going to have that attitude when it comes to things
which also means that when things don’t go his way he might get angry or frustrated , it might make him snap or shut down . but it’s not something he means to do intentionally ( not always anyways ) . sometimes he’s a man who acts before he thinks and it’s something he’s often guilty of
but another important thing about him : he’s not afraid to spend his money . if he likes you he will spend money doing whatever he thinks will make you happy . this is more of something he does in a romantic sense but he’s known to gift expensive things to his friends too . that’s just what he does and he doesn’t think much about it
i can ramble on and on but the gist is giovanni is a spoiled rich boy who acts like it until he thinks better of it . sometimes he can be a really decent human being , sometimes he’s an ass who doesn’t think before he acts . but yk maybe that’s all part of his charm .
