They said yeah and smiled and I told them “one of your moms called today. She wants to watch you play, but she can’t get a hold of you. Call your mom.”
And they all pulled out their phones and started discussing whose mom it probably was as they presumably dialed their own.
And now, unless we meet again and recognize each other, that’s who I’ll be forever to those guys–some mysterious courier for mom-messages who came out of the woods and told them their mom called.
I didn’t even tell them why their mom called me. Who am I to their mom?? Nobody even asked. They just took my word for it and called their mothers.

i think we are long overdue for a game that does the reverse of 90s first person shooters and actively makes fun of the player for picking the hard difficulty

So before we start, this will be long in part because there is a lot and partly because I will be including parts of the CBA in image form.
You may or may not already know parts of this. You may know that a player is on an ELC but not what group that is or what that actually means. You may know that a player is an RFA, but not which kind or why. This is here to (hopefully) help you understand the groupings, what they mean, and why or why not players get moved every free agency.
*Notes:
SPC: Standard Player Contract
ELC: An "Entry Level Contract" which is an SPC subject to the ELS.
ELS: Entry Level System - The rules system for limiting rookie contract payouts
An Accrued Season: A year in which a Skater is on an NHL roster for a minimum of 40 games and a Goaltender is on an NHL roster for a minimum of 30 games.
Group 1 : Entry Level Players (Rookie Contracts)
This group consists of players aged 18-24 who have signed their first SPC*, or as noted with these players ELC, that is subject to compensation limits for a set amount of time.
• 18-21 year olds at the time of signing are subject to 3 years
• 22-23 year olds are subject to 2 years
• 24 year olds are subject to 1 year
Some of these contracts are able to "slide" or move the contract dates forward if said player signed their ELC's at 18-19 years of age and played fewer than ten (10) NHL games during the first season and subsequently the second season if applicable.
Group 2 : Restricted Free Agents
This group is made of players that do not fall into either Group 1 (Entry Level Players) or Group 3 (Unrestricted Free Agents).
10.2(c) :
Players in this group are considered more restricted RFAs than just Group 2 players. They have not completed enough professional experience to be considered Group 2 players. 'Professional Experience' in this case being "Playing ten (10) or more NHL games in a given league season" for the duration of their first SPC (ELC).
Group 3 : Unrestricted Free Agents
Any player whose contract has ended that has either 7 Accrued Seasons, or are 27 years of age or older as of June 30th that year.
Group 6 : Free Agents
Players who are 25 years or older, have completed 3 or more professional seasons (Professional Seasons in this case being 11+ games per season for players aged 18-19 and 1+ games per season for players 20 years or older played in any non-college or non-major juniors league including but not limited to NHL/AHL/ECHL/European Leagues), whose contract have ended, and that have played less than 80 NHL games (Skaters) or 28 NHL games (Goaltenders) may elect to choose this group.
Draft-Related Unrestricted Free Agents
Any Player not able to participate in any future entry draft and not signed to a club or Any player who was claimable during the entry draft but went unclaimed.
