The Milan investigation into an alleged prostitution ring connected to the city's luxury nightlife is entering a crucial phase. In the coming days, prosecutors in Milan will question several well known Serie A and Italy national team footballers as witnesses, meaning they are people who may have information about the case and are not under investigation.

Among the high profile names identified by investigators are Daniel Maldini, Atalanta forward and son of AC Milan legend Paolo Maldini, Riccardo Calafiori, Arsenal and Italy defender, and Kevin Bonifazi, Bologna defender. Investigators from the Financial Police also plan to question a couple more athletes to reconstruct what happened during the evenings and their possible contacts with the organization.

How the alleged scheme worked

At the center of the investigation, led by prosecutor Bruna Albertini and deputy prosecutor Rosaria Stagnaro, is Ma.De Milano, an agency that prosecutors claim acted as a front company.

On April 21, four people were placed under house arrest, including Emanuele Buttini and Deborah Ronchi, who are partners and are alleged to have been the organizers and leaders of a criminal association.

According to intercepted conversations, the alleged organizers encouraged escorts to approach footballers and other athletes during exclusive parties at some of Milan's most fashionable venues. For those interested, the evenings allegedly continued in hotels with paid sexual services, sometimes involving the recreational drug known as "laughing gas."

The alleged organizers reportedly kept at least 50% of the money earned from each encounter.

Phones and chats under examination

Investigators are now analyzing the mobile phones seized from those arrested, as well as phones voluntarily handed over by women interviewed as witnesses.

They are searching chats using a long list of keywords, including more than 60 footballers' surnames, to verify how appointments were arranged and how money moved.

Important clarification

The Milan Prosecutor's Office stresses that no footballer has been entered into the register of suspects.

Many of the names that appeared in the investigation may simply have attended public parties organized by the Milan agency and may have had no involvement whatsoever in the alleged prostitution network that investigators are examining.
