me and my gay friends whenever we meet up anywhere that isn't each other's houses
socialists are constantly lectured by condescending liberals that the revolution isn't realistic, sweetie, but these people have clearly never studied the history of revolutionary movements and just assume all radicals are like bomb throwing angry teenagers or some shit. most revolutionary parties, from the black panther party to the people's liberation army, have integrated the building of spaces outside the state and capital that meet the needs of working people materially and practically. these people are just parroting the "works in theory not in practice uwu" cliche that had been used to silence any vision of politics outside of electoralism for fucking years. it's so frustrating
Hot take but lesbians and bi women aren’t different levels of wlw

this week in I Am Very Smart: having enough money to go to the opera, museums and concerts correlates with having enough money for food, shelter and basic health needs
They controlled for socioeconomic factors though! The people who conducted this study knew that people with lots of money to attend the opera were also more likely to be able to afford basic necessities, so they controlled for it in their analysis. The fun thing about statistics is that you can control for different confounding factors so you can look at the effects of one independent variable (opera or whatever) on the dependent variable (mortality). Part of being critical of potential biases is actually reading the article and knowing what to look for.
In addition to that very good point about controlling for socioeconomic factors, the article says a single museum or concert per year makes a difference. Most cities have free community concerts (some even have free opera performances!) and museums that are either free, pay-what-you-want, or at least have specific days/times during which they are free or at a significantly reduced cost. Many libraries (which are free) provide free museum passes to card holders. In fact, the article quotes a museum worker who works at a free art museum in Baltimore.
If you actually read the article you would also read that educators are excited about this study because it provides evidence that the arts should be made more accessible financially - by restoring arts programs in the public schools, for example.
no offence intended to op but!! this is why checking sources and reading through things before you critique them is very important!!
i’m not trying to criticize op specifically cuz i know how easy it is to jump to conclusions and make assumptions, trust me i do it all the time, but really this should serve as a reminder to all of us that when you’re critiquing something it’s important to get your facts straight first.
a lot of things and people face unecessary and undeserved criticism because they’re misunderstood or misinterpreted, or oftentimes a group with a particular agenda will deliberately twist facts and misrepresent things to discredit the original source or to further their own cause.
fact check y’all!!! not everything is as it seems!!! don’t believe everything you read!
that Brian Eno quote about how whatever you find most repulsive about a medium (film grain, record scratches/fuzz, CDs skipping) will be the first thing you try and emulate once that medium is obsolete because it's "the sign of a moment too powerful for the medium assigned to contain it".... man.......
“Whatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature. CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit - all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided. It’s the sound of failure: so much modern art is the sound of things going out of control, of a medium pushing to its limits and breaking apart. The distorted guitar sound is the sound of something too loud for the medium supposed to carry it. The blues singer with the cracked voice is the sound of an emotional cry too powerful for the throat that releases it. The excitement of grainy film, of bleached-out black and white, is the excitement of witnessing events too momentous for the medium assigned to record them.” -Brian Eno

nonbinary robots are cool and all but imagine a robot designed to be genderless and it sees a girl and is like “wtf girls are cute im a girl now” and the scientists are like u cant do this thing but she is already out the door
ive been off and on watching that new animated grinch movie since last night and i think theres a popular text post expressing this exactly but my god its so pathetic the grinch isnt even mean like they show one scene where hes rude in a grocery store (because the grinch apparently goes down to get groceries) and the rest of the movie hes generally unselfish and even pleasant. like just absolutely pitiful. i feel like i need to watch the jim carrey grinch movie as a palate cleanser
how dare you stand where he stood
just looking for a gf who doesn’t want the pickle that comes with her sandwich at lunch and she says here do u want my pickle and gives it to me
me: *breaks down crying in the privacy of my own home*
my brain: you’re faking your emotions for attention. you’re just doing this because you think it makes for a cool personal narrative

At first I though this was a joke
Don’t ignore this Tumblr
Yet they still do even when it’s right in their face.
This reminds me of how a friend of mine was abused by the mother of his child. She was mentally unstable and used to berate him constantly and would smack him in the head all the time. It really pissed me off. Then one night she threw hot coffee in his face and tried to stab him with a screwdriver. The cops hauled him off to jail because she made up a sob story that painted herself as the victim. Once he left her, he stayed with me and it was a nightmare. She stalked him and me. She would drive by my house obsessively at all hours of the day and night (her muffler made a weird sound so I know it was her). She started showing up at my job, showing up at the places I frequented around town, and filling up my voicemail with dead air. The cops were no help. One day she got bold enough to talk her way into my home by conning my elderly grandmother, whom I was taking care of, while I was out. She went in my room and went through my stuff (creepy), then found him napping on the couch and attacked him. My grandmother witnessed the whole thing. He grabbed her by the arms, forced her out the front door, and locked it. The cops were called again. They said they’d go and ‘talk’ to her.
The next day we were watching a movie and there was a knock at the door. The police had come to arrest him. She filed a complaint against him and shown off some bruises on her arms from the altercation that she swore were completely unprovoked. My grandmother saw the whole thing since she was in the living room too and testified on his behalf. He still ended up serving jail time. No one takes male domestic violence victims seriously. They only see males as perpetrators.
#standing up for male victims takes NOTHING away from female victims #this isn’t an either/or scenario #you can pursue justice for male victims and still be 100% feminist #safer world for EVERYONE
This is important. Just… everyone needs to see this.
This pisses me off to no end. My heart goes out to all the male victims of abuse out there.
I know male victims of abuse at the hands of girlfriends. It is not nearly as rare as you might think it is.
In the good timeline, a ban on government and corporate use of facial recognition software would be a major election issue
Let’s be clear here, there is no legitimate use for mass scale facial recognition tools. None. In every case it will lead to a total erosion of what remains of your privacy.
Not the police, not tech companies, no one should be able to track and identify you in an instant wherever you go.
Right now we’re possibly at the last point in time where this technology can be banned across the board before it’s suddenly everywhere and the argument will be “but everyone is using it, so we can’t do anything about it”.
Facial recognition should absolutely be a major issue right now.
