quite honestly, who could have seen this coming ? of all the crazy batshit things that have been happening in the last week, this was just the final nail in the coffin. stevie could practically hear herself say ‘ this might as well happen ’ as wide eyes witness her boss – the motherfucking CEO for the company she works for – tips back into the ocean.
and if it weren’t for the ice cold roar of the waves below, they would have heard him scream all the way down. ‘ shit !! ’ her mouth fell open, ‘ did i really just kick him off the pier ? ’ in her defense, he had broken his a hand free and grabbed at her wrist.
she whips her head to look back at nadia, ‘ don’t look at me ! it’s like colder than it was out when the TITANIC sank ! ’ stevie shook her head, ‘ slim to none. i picked this pier for a reason — it’s like fully abandoned, not even homeless people hang out here. ’
“ Nope. No. You did not do this — technically. Abandoned pier, icy conditions, this is accidental, as long as he doesn’t resurface with the ropes and duct tape, or at all.” She put her arm through Stevie’s, wanting to avoid any risk of becoming a popsicle. “ Your CEO is a popsicle right now, can we pause the comedy special and get the fuck out of here first. I’m going to have nightmares about getting haunted, can we leave before we run the risk of becoming Stephen King heroines? ”
There should have been a heavy feeling of guilt, but it was nothing but selfish panic. She was scared of jail, she was scared of that momentary sense of justice watching the asshole sink to the bottom of the ocean.
Oh god, they drove here. “ Stevie, I don’t think the ice will melt away any tire tracks we might leave in that very abandoned parking lot? ” Think, idiot, think! Two years of shadowing homicide detectives gave them a good chance of possibly not finding themselves thrown in jail for the rest of their lives. “ We can’t keep the car. Fuck that asshole, he’s half dead and still costing us money. ”
