Why do the Carstairs owe the Herondales? Is it a Jem and Will thing or maybe a Cordelia saved from Lilith by a herondale thing? Also does anyone remember when it's first mentioned?

I'm re-reading ghost of the shadow market and in The land i lost Magnus mentions to Alec that the only lightwood that was good with languages was Thomas. Does this mean Thomstairs will probably move to France when they get together and Thomas may also learn farsi for Alistair.
