Its really sad. I dont look forward to pride month these days. Every year instead of pride and freedom and celebration like it should represent, and a reflection of how far we have come in fighting for our rights and why, or calling attention to how much more we need to do. June has become a period of nonstop lgbt+ related discourse. I begin to dread june because I know ill have to see people debating identities, slurs, who can say what, older vs newer terminology, cops at pride, corporate pride, straight people and corporations going to pride when its radio silence and behind-the-scenes oppression every other day of the year. I dread it. I hate having to see people argue if lesbians can say dyke or bi people can call themselves gay or if trans women are allowed to be anything more than a delicate and silent woman in a dress or allowed to be attracted to people or sexual, if older lgbt people can call themselves queens or transsexual or transvestites. Who can call themselves butch or femme. Its bullshit.
Please can we ALL take the initiative to learn our history and the nuances of our community. Dont treat twitter or tumblr like a textbook or the end all be all of whats politically correct. Dont wait for people to correct you, seek out the historical truths and pay attention to what currently happens. Speak up and speak out for other lgbt people. Especially lgbt people of color!!! Stop arguing about kink at pride or trying to convince someone to call themselves qu**r if theyre uncomfortable with it, and pay attention to the bigger issues at hand. That's what pride is about. Coming together to directly change the status quo and protect eachother. The echo chamber of the internet is not doing anyone good.
