Your eyes brightened as you nodded excitedly. He allowed a small smile to play on his lips as he ripped a post-it from the pile he kept on the counter to keep notes on inventory. He pulled a pen from his shirt pocket and clicked it.
"Okay here's a few I think will look fantastic in your garden…"
You sat at your kitchen counter with a sigh. You opened your laptop and signed in. The bag of gardening supplies sat next to your laptop. Taehyun, bless his heart, had been such a help to your clueless mind. Yes you may work with flowers but that didn't mean you weren't indecisive.
You silently cursed yourself for not asking him how to start your garden. Might have been more useful than asking for what kind of flowers you should plant. You sighed again as you googled how to start a garden. As you read the search results, too lazy to bother clicking on an actual article, one of the recommended searches catches your eye.
What flower is associated with love?
That's easy, you thought. Roses were associated with romance, everyone knew that. From wedding bouquets to Valentine's day gifts, roses were a go to for lovers.
Still you were curious about Google's take so you clicked on it. You tapped your fingers against the counter as it loaded. Of course the first thing that popped up was roses. But it wasn't the only result. Tulips, Orchids, Lilies, Peruvian Lilies, and Carnations also came up as romantic flowers.
Those results scratched your brain. Slowly turning your gaze from your computer screen to the bag of gardening supplies, your brain ticked. You reached into the bag and pulled out the packets of seeds, you laid them out on your counter so the types were visible. The flowers Taehyun had picked out for you matched the search results.
Sucking in a deep breath you opened a new tab and searched up flower meanings. You clicked on the first one that popped up and scrolled and read until you found what you were looking for.
Tulips were used to express endearing love.
Orchids expressed affection and love that withstood challenges.
Lilies represent eternal love, symbolizing pure and deep affection.
Peruvian Lilies meant a strong bond with straits such as loyalty and devotion.
Carnations symbolize love and appreciation.
You felt dizzy. Did Taehyun know what the flowers he picked for you meant? Was it a coincidence? A few you could excuse, but all?
Placing your head in your hands you tried to keep your breath steady. Truth be told you had a not so small crush on your quiet coworker. Ever since your first day at the shop. His looks had drawn you in but it wasn't what pulled you in deep.
You had made your first bouquet for the store and were so excited to sell it. But no one appeared to want it.
Taehyun had noticed your dismay and slipped over to your side when the store wasn't busy. He had bought your bouquet with nothing more than a nod. You didn't know but he put it on his nightstand and would stare at it wistfully as he laid in bed at night. He was amazed by the beauty you had created that no one had appreciated. He kept it long past its death. Throwing it away brokenhearted, only as the long since petals decided to mold.
And now staring at the seeds he'd picked for you you felt a shiver of hope. Maybe he liked you back? But how would you find out? You supposed you could always ask him.
The next day at work you couldn't sit still. You fidgeted with nervous excitement. You kept stealing glances over at Taehyun as he helped customers, often meeting his eyes as he was looking at you too.
Taehyun was losing his mind with nerves. Did you figure it out? It wasn't too obvious but if you cared you surely would have noticed. And why did you keep looking at him? Did you indeed figure it out but were disgusted instead of enamored?
He was dying to put it simply.
Gathering up courage he went over to your side and pretended to be interested in the flower magazines on the stand. He was dying to ask you, but he was terrified.
"Hey Taehyun?" Your soft voice reached his ears.
He hummed in response, not looking at you, too afraid to see what emotion was swimming in your eyes.
"Why did you recommend those flowers to me? Was there a reason or...?"
His knee's almost gave out. He yearned to say the truth. But his mouth was his enemy. "They are just my favourites."
"Oh." He finally looked up to see disappointment in your face. It nearly broke him.
"I love you!" He blurted before his mouth could seal shut, trapping them inside of him forever.
Your mouth dropped open in shock.
Feeling a strange surge of confidence he rushed on. The words seemed to spill from his lips.
"I have for a long time really, I just never knew how to tell you. I know how much you love flowers so I thought that by giving you flowers with romantic symbolism it would take the place of a worded confession. I just got really nervous and afraid you'd reject me." His voice grew quiet giving you time to respond.
You were stunned for a moment before regaining your voice. "That's the sweetest way someone's ever confessed to me." You smiled at him. "Who knew you'd be such a romantic?"
His ears were burning. "I'm not really.... I just wanted to be for you."
"You can be."
His eyes widened in surprise. Hope flared inside his chest. "Really?"
"Yeah unless you changed your mind."
"No." He said it so firmly it took you aback. "Never. I'm not changing my mind. Not now, not in a million years, not ever." His voice held such truth and longing it made your insides mush.
"I won't change my mind either." You assured him, reaching across the counter to grab his hand.
He hesitated before bringing the back of your hand up to his lips and placing a soft lingering kiss to it that said more than words ever could.
A gloved hand brushed yours. "Let me." Taehyun said gently.
You removed your hand from the gardening box, letting Taehyun pull the last weed and throw it on the pile. He wore gloves, and sensing you wouldn't wear any, he brought an extra pair with him. Still he didn't want you to hurt yourself on a thorn. What if the thorn was so sharp it broke through the fabric of the glove and pricked the delicate skin beneath?
"You could have let me pull a single weed you know? I know your my boyfriend but I'm not helpless."
He felt warm inside at the title. Boyfriend. That's right, he was your boyfriend. Him confessing to you hadn't been a dream, and you returning his feelings hadn't been a hallucination.
"I like doing things for you." He said simply, pulling off his gloves.
You rolled your eyes affectionately. "I love you."
"I love you too." The words rolled easily off his tongue. He felt happy and content saying them, it was no longer a struggle to get words past his lips for you.
You grabbed a seed packet, Lilies, and smiled mischievously.
"Don't worry when these grow i'll make you all the flower arrangements you want so you don't have to horde dead flowers." You teased him.
Oh how he regretted telling you about the first bouquet he bought from you.
"Throwing them away feels like I'm throwing away a part of your love." He admitted softly.
God how you adored him.
"You can't throw me away that easily."
He smiled. "I'll never throw you away."
The two of you spent the rest of the afternoon planting your garden. Taehyun being patient when teaching you the steps and techniques.
The time he had with you was the happiest time in his entire life. He had no regrets about blurting those three words to you.
As you stood in the setting sun looking proudly at your now planted garden, he couldn't resist intertwining his hands with yours and pressing a gentle kiss to the side of your head before pressing his lips against you. Taehyun always kissed you like he was returning from a 30 year long war. His kisses were filled with yearning. He wanted you to know how much he was devoted to you. And he would do it through any means.
Yes Taehyun was a quiet person, but he would give you all his words if it meant making you happy.
