after getting them those collars friday evenings had quietly become theirs.
the sun sat low, spilling warm amber light through the apartment windows, bathing the couch and floor alike. from the kitchen doorway, you watched them laze aroundâ five shapes scattered like they belonged there. the silver of their collars caught the glow, colors youâd picked carefully, each one fitting a little too well.
xavier, was draped half on the couch, half on the floor, long limbs loose and relaxed like heâd finally clocked out for the week. his blue eyes followed you even as his body stayed still, a way keep quiet tabs on you without meaning to.
zayne, all soft fur and solid weight, had claimed the cushion beside where you usually sat. he looked quite oversized for the space, posture deceptively calm, eyes flicking up every time you shifted if you were uncomfortable like an old habit.
rafayel was sprawled dramatically across the rug, devon rex curls catching the sunlight as he rolled onto his back without shame, tail flicking as if daring someone to comment. he knew how to make himself the center of your attention âunintentionallyâ if you were too focused on the show without giving him pets.
sylus lingered at the edge. perched half on the arm of the couch, half turned toward the window, sharp ears angled outward like he was keeping watch for something only he could sense. justin case.
and calebâ your biggest shadowâ lay closest to the kitchen threshold. the german shepherdâs head lifted the moment you moved, tail thumping softly against the floor. instinct, maybe.
it still surprised you how quickly theyâd settled in everytime you moved to the couch with a drink, sinking into the cushions as familiar weight followed. xavier stretched lazily and claimed your lap like it was his right, purring low when you didnât protest. zayne leaned in closer, shoulder brushing your arm, steady and grounding. rafayel scooted nearer with a soft chirp, clearly offended if your attention drifted too long. caleb shifted just enough that his chin rested against your ankle. sylus stayed where he wasâ but his eyes never left you.
the tv murmured in the backgroundâ something half-watched, half-used as noise. every now and then, a painfully awkward scene made you laugh.
xavierâs purr deepened against your thigh. rafayel let out an amused little meow chirp from the floor. caleb along with zayne answered with a pleased, quiet woof and meow respectively.
your smile came easy. fingers moved without thought, offering brief scratches and gentle pats. not too much. just enough. every one of them leaned into it like the smallest affection mattered more than it should.
âgod,â you murmured fondly, âyouâre all spoiled.â
your phone buzzed beside you. you picked it up, scrolling through messagesâ friends, family, a work email that made you sigh but answer anyway.
as you closed the app, another icon caught your eye.
love and deepspace.
you paused, humming softly.
âhuh⌠havenât logged in for a while,â you mumbled. âguess iâve been busy with you guys.â
around youâ ears perked.
xavierâs purring stopped. zayneâs gaze sharpened. rafayel froze mid-tail flick, jaw slightly dropped. calebâs ears tipped forward. sylusâs eyes narrowed.
the room shifted, subtle but immediate.
before anything else could happenâ
your phone rang.
a coworkerâs name lit the screen.
you answered without thinking. âheyââ
a male voice filled the now quiet room.
everything unraveled at once.
calebâs woof cut sharp through the air. rafayel followed with a loud, offended meow. xavier tugged at the hem of your pajama pants, teeth catching fabric without biting down, a clear demand for attention. when you glanced up, you caught zayne glaring (not at you, but you think he is).
and from the corner of your vision, sylusâs claws slid outâ just enough to show.
âheyâ hey, itâs okay,â you whispered quickly. âshh.â
you stood, backing toward your bedroom, finger pressed to your lips, when you realize they were about to follow. âsorry. just a second, okay?â
you slipped inside and closed the door gently behind you, mouthing sorry through the crack before it shut.
on the other side, silence fell.
xavier sat upright, sleepiness gone in the blink of an eye. zayne didnât move an inch. rafayelâs tail lashed once, then stilled. caleb stayed planted in front of the door. sylus turned fully toward it, ears forward, eyes dark.
every one of them listened as your voice drifted through the wallâ soft, familiar, meant for someone else.
and none of them liked it.
â ĘÉ â
you lean back against your bed, phone pressed to your ear, voice low.
âis something wrong at work?â
thereâs a pause on the other end, then a nervous laugh.
ânot reallyâ i mean, kind of? but not bad.â he exhales. âyouâre needed for a business trip. different province. the one beside us. close, but⌠youâll be gone for three to four days.â
you blink.
ââŚwhy am i hearing this from a call?â
âit was urgent!!â elliot blurts out immediately. âiâm sorry, okay? but you know how picky our boss is. you and mira were the best choicesâ you both adapt fast, andââ he rushes, then slows. âyeah. it had to be you.â
âalso because mira was there and said no firstâŚâ
you sigh, dragging a hand down your face. you can already feel the weight of it settling in.
after a beat, he adds, softer, âandâ uh. i know youâve got your pets. the ones youâre really attached to. so me and mira can look after them while youâre gone.â
you hesitate.
your gaze drifts to the door, to the other side of it.
three to four days⌠thats a long time. they havenât interacted to anyone yet.
even when they watched outside with curious eyes they didnt want to leave when you tried to take them on a walk.
especially after getting a cat wheel.
ââŚi donât know,â you murmur. âthatâs a huge notice that droped out of nowhere.â
âi know, i know,â elliot groans. âi owe you. we owe you. seriously.â
you hum thoughtfully, then straighten a little.
âif youâre really serious about this,â you say slowly, âyouâre paying for an automatic feeder. a good one.â
thereâs a split second of silenceâ then, âyes maâam!â
you laugh despite yourself. âand donât cheap out.â
ânever,â he says solemnly. âiâll even send you options.â
âfine,â you sigh. âiâll go. but iâm still gonna be mad about it.â
âunderstood,â he replies cheerfully. âtripâs in five days. iâll handle the rest.â
you hang up, staring at the screen for a moment longer before setting the phone down.
five days.
your chest tightens a little.
when you open the bedroom door, all eyes snap to you instantly. ears tilt. bodies shift. the tension from earlier hasnât gone anywhereâ itâs just been waiting.
you move back to the couch and sit, letting out another sigh.
âhey,â you murmur, reaching out, fingers sinking into warm fur. âsorry for leaving.â
you pet them one by one, lingering longer than usual. scratches behind ears. gentle pats along backs. reassuring touches.
âbutâŚâ you started,
âi might have to be gone for a few days,â you admit quietly. âwork stuff.â
they press closer. crowd you. one climbs back into your lap like he refuses to be displaced again.
you smile faintly, rubbing along a familiar collar.
âiâll make it up to you,â you promise. âtreats, food, maybe some new toys, okay?â
they donât let out a single noiseâ but they donât pull away either.
and the guilt started eating you up again.
â ĘÉ â
the next five days pass more slowly than you expect.
it starts with small changesâ things you only notice because youâre already paying attention.
day one
you stop by the pet store after work. you linger longer than necessary, reading labels, debating flavors, picking things up only to put them back. when you finally come home with bags rustling at your sides, theyâre already waiting by the door like they knew.
caleb is first to his feet, tail wagging low and steady, body angled protectively between you and the hallway like heâs been counting seconds. rafayel chirps from somewhere behind him, peeking around with open curiosity, while xavier stretches and rises more slowly, eyes already scanning you for signs of exhaustion. zayne watches your handsâ what youâre carrying, how tightly youâre gripping the bags. sylusâ ears tilt forward, while he slowly circles around your legs, bumping his nose against them.
âsee?â you laugh, crouching down. âi didnât forget.â
you let them sniff everything before putting it away. rafayel inspects each treat like an art critic, turning his nose away from one brand before approving another. zayne waits until you sit before he eats, watching you with a calm that feels deliberate. caleb nudges your wrist when you stand again, a gentle insistence that you stay where he can see you. xavier presses against your side, purring softly, while sylus watches the door until you lock itâ only then does he relax.
day two
you start packing.
a shirt disappears from the bed the moment you turn away.
you donât notice until later, when youâre folding laundry before loading your suitcase and realize one is missing. you frown, then shrug, assuming itâs buried somewhere in the hamper.
you donât see caleb nosing it beneath the couch earlier, or the way xavier curls around it afterward, fur pressed into fabric like it holds your scent too loosely to be left alone.
they trail you everywhere.
never enough to trip you on purposeâ but close. always close. shadows at your heels. rafayel lounges across doorways just enough to slow you down, forcing you to step carefully. zayne positions himself where he can see you at all times, posture relaxed but eyes alert. sylus chooses corners with good sightlines. caleb stays nearest to your legs. xavier never lets you leave a room alone.
then it happens anyway.
your foot catches on the edge of the rug and you stumble forward, catching yourself on the doorframe with a sharp breath.
everything freezes.
ears snap up. eyes widen. muscles tense all at once like a pulled wire. caleb half-rises, a low sound curling in his chest before he forces it down. zayneâs tail bristles before smoothing again, his gaze snapping immediately to your ankle. rafayelâs playful expression vanishes. sylusâs claws slide out a fraction about to punce to check on you. xavier jolts up,you couldâve mistaken him for a flash of light.
you laugh, breathless.
âohâŚ! sorry⌠that was clumsy of me.â
you rub your ankle, testing your weight. fine. youâre fine.
they know that. and they see that.
and stillâ for a single heartbeat, the same thought crosses more than one mind.
if you were hurt⌠then you couldnât leave.
you would stay.
the thought is sharp. ugly.
it twists painfully through them, instinct colliding with devotion.
no. no, no, no.
they recoil from it just as fast, shame washing over the impulse. they donât want you hurt. they want you laughing, moving, aliveâ standing in your kitchen with the sunlight catching in your hair like this moment will last forever.
âhey,â you say softly, kneeling, oblivious to their actual thoughts. âiâm okay. promise.â
your hands move through fur, warm. pulling them back from thoughts they donât want to claim.
they lean into your touch automatically. closer. tighter. caleb stays near your legs longer than necessary, eyes tracking every shift of your balance. zayne subtly nudges the rug flat with his paw afterward. xavier doesnât leave your side for the rest of the night.
and in case you do trip, theyâll just cushion your fall.
day three
you come home tired.
you drop your bag by the door and sink onto the couch without even turning on the tv. immediately, weight presses in around youâ xavier sprawls across your lap, purring like heâs afraid silence might steal you. zayne settles at your side, solid and warm. rafayel curls dramatically at your feet, tail flicking when you stop petting him. caleb rests his head on your knee and refuses to move. sylus wedges himself behind the couch, close enough that you can feel his presence even without seeing him.
you card your fingers through fur, slow and absent.
âyou guys are extra clingy lately,â you giggle.
a chorus of content sounds answers you.
later, when you check your phone, rafayel noses it awayâ persistent. you sigh and let it happen. xavier curls into a tighter ball. sylus watches the screen go dark with something like satisfaction.
day four
you bring home toys.
you tell yourself itâs practical. enrichment. distraction while youâre gone.
they tear into them with more intensity than necessary. caleb growls low when rafayel gets too close. rafayel retaliates by stealing calebâs toy out of spite. sylus watches until it escalates, then intervenes with a sharp look alone. zayne drops his toy at your feet and stares up at you like this is a trade. xavier refuses his entirely unless you hold it first.
and as the chaos continues you set up the automatic feeder elliot ordered for you dropped outside your door, courtesy of mira who paid majority of it.
you sit on the floor with them that evening as they sprawl on the living room floor.
they donât stop watching you. not one of them. how could they?
even with your clothes end up covered in fur and your hands smelling like treats. the sun sets behind you casting a halo around your head.
you looked absolutely beautiful.
day five
your last day at home comes too quickly.
your suitcase is fully packed now, sitting by the door like a personal offense. you move around it carefully, like pretending it isnât there might make it disappear.
they sense it immediately.
everything feels heavier. quieter. caleb refuses to eat unless youâre right there. zayne paces, nails clicking softly, looking at your luggage more often than necessary. rafayel hovers close, tail low. xavier never lets you out of his sight. sylus positions himself between you and the exit without making it obvious.
when you sit, they crowd you more than everâ no space left between bodies, like even air might take you away.
you kneel and hug them one by one, pressing your cheek into warm fur.
âitâs just a few days,â you whisper. âiâll be back before you know it.â
their responses are wordless but intense. eyes locked on you. ears down. tails swaying low.
that night before you leave, you sleep on the couch.
you wake in the middle of the night tangled in themâ weight on your legs, your waist, your chest. calebâs breath ghosts over your wrist. zayneâs heartbeat is steady beneath your palm. xavier is draped across you like he belongs there. rafayel curls under your chin. sylus laying right above your head, lightly nudging you subconsciously.
you donât remember feeling any of them going up, yet you donât move them either before you close your eyes once more.
unseen, unheard, five minds memorize the moment before you woke up.
the way you breathe. the way you smell. and the way you fit perfectly against them.
they ingrain this moment to each of their senses. so that just maybe they wonât go insane and kill each other while youâre gone.
