Long time no see! So, I’m thinking of rebooting this blog - same url, just a fresh start! I’ll be keeping this one as an archive, though, so... keep an eye out for a new promo soon if you want to follow me on the new one!

Vanya still debated internally, weighing her complete dislike for shopping versus the reward of having pants that actually fit her changing body. “… If anyone can change my mind about shopping, I guess it’s you,” she finally said. “Alright. I’ll get the keys to Dad’s old car.”
Unlike Klaus, Vanya could drive, but took public transportation because she didn’t have a car–and frankly didn’t want to save up for one on her meager income as a teacher.
Klaus clapped happily - not only were they going to get to go shopping, which he already found to be plenty of fun in itself, but he was going to get a ride there, and... Well, he liked riding in a car, it was far more peaceful than public transport and a rather nice change of pace.
“Yay!” He celebrated, moving to snatch his coat from where it laid draped over the couch. “You’ll have fun, you’ll see! How much stuff do you think you’ll need? A few pants, maybe - ooh, we should probably get you some new shirts, too, and... Oh, we’ll see what you like when we get there!”

“Diego doesn’t ever have invited guests,” She pointed out, as she finished off the last of the block of mozzarella. Her hair flipped out of her face as she looked over at Klaus as he cut up the toppings. “But y’know, you’re always welcome here, right? Drunk, stoned, hungover, half sober, you can come hang out for as long or short as you want.”
I worry about you too, she wanted to say, but everytime she opened her mouth she couldn’t manage to say it. Her and Klaus weren’t exactly close, she saw him maybe two or three times in the last few years. But she saw Diego every day and she knew how much his brother disappearing for months at a time affected him. Sure his lectures were annoying but, his heart was in the right place.
“I have one rule though,” Jenna added. “If you overdose in my living room, I’m calling an ambulance and sending you to rehab, okay? And if you maybe wanna… I dunno call your brother instead just to let him know you’re okay the phone’s on the table beside the couch.”
This wasn’t something to which he was used at all.
In his experience, he was less than welcome in most places - he was personable, sure, and generally charming, but that could only get him so far. He’d worn out his welcome in his siblings’ homes, and even Diego, who was a lot more patient with him than he usually got credit for, tended to kick him to the curb unless he realized that Klaus truly needed a place to crash for a little while.
Truth to be told, as much as he at least played the part of being angry and annoyed when he got kicked out - most of the time he was, but not always - he did get why they did it, and he didn’t really blame them.
That did mean, though, that Jenna’s invitation surprised him. He was sure that it’d be only a matter of time before she regretted her words and rescinded the invitation, but for now... That was amazing. It wasn’t easy, finding somewhere to spend the night. Not at all.
“Really? That - wow, that’s... Thank you.” He smiled, and it was clear that it was sincere. “You drive a hard bargain, but I guess I accept.”
His tone was teasing now, lips quirked into a bit of a smirk as he held out his hand for her to shake and seal the deal.
At her suggestion that he call his brother, though, Klaus grew silent once again. He wanted to call him, he truly did, but things with Diego were always complicated. If he called, would his brother even want to hear from him? Part of him just knew that he would, but another feared that he’d just get scolded and have Diego hang up on him because he was busy with his vigilante gig.
“Nah, he wouldn’t want to hear from me.” Klaus decided, waving his hand dismissively. “You know him, he’s always busy perching on rooftops or whatever it is that he does every night.”
goodpeopledie:
It was rare for Ben to look on the bright side in the fashion that he was. He’d been quiet in life, and remained quiet in death. He could speak up and offer comfort or a distraction when Klaus needed it but he absolutely had not been an optimist in life. And he just felt like Klaus needed the enthusiasm for it to work.
Maybe he did, maybe he didn’t. The question in this case, was if the discussions would work. If these ghosts spoke English. Or any other language that Klaus -or Ben himself- spoke. If they weren’t too far gone with their grief to be lost causes.
He watched as several of the ghosts in the group that Klaus addressed perked up, their miserable expressions twisting into relief at the fact they were being spoken to, they would be helped. A girl no older than Ben had been when he died, stepped forward, she looked almost normal, save for the red blood staining her chest.
❝Please, please help!❞ The girl begged, she hadn’t even accepted the fact she was dead. ❝—I’ve been shot!❞
Ben winced as he looked at Klaus and then drifted close to him. ❝I don’t think she knows.❞
Oh, no.
Oh, no, no, no, no.
He didn’t want to do this. He didn’t want to be the one who broke the news to her, he didn’t want to be the one that crushed all hope from her. It wasn’t fair, he wasn’t the grim reaper, he hadn’t signed up for this. He hadn’t asked for his powers, he didn’t even like his powers, he -
He didn’t have a choice, did he?
It was far more cruel to let her carry on with the illusion that she was still alive somehow, desperately seeking out help. It was kinder to explain things to her, to try and help her find peace.
If there was any peace to be found.
He hoped there was.
He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, trying to steel himself for what was to come. This wasn’t going to be easy, he knew that much.
“Hey, uh...” He frowned. Words usually came so easily to him, but now they seemed to be stuck in his throat. For how long had she been wandering around? Did she suspect something, somehow? Was she tired of an endless search for help? Would she feel better when she knew? He hoped so. He hoped that he’d somehow be able to make things easier for her. “Why don’t we sit down, huh?”
Klaus moved to take a seat on the curb, gesturing for her to follow suit.
Klaus: I really want to tell a joke, but I only remember the punchline
Dave: Go ahead
Klaus:“Tooth hurty”
Dave: “What’s a dentist’s favorite time of day?”
Klaus: You complete me
sunflowersnwhiskey:
“No, I need to be there to get the information of anyone who wants to buy a print,” Jenna sighed, as she rubbed at her eyes. “The only way I could get out of being there is if I had an assistant do it for me, but I don’t make enough money to hire an assistant.”
She looked flipped through a portfolio, for anything that might catch her eye. There was nothing, she knew that she’d looked through it five times. She looked at the clock. “I mean, I don’t know about part-time. But I have enough savings that I should be fine skipping just one show.”
“Oh, hey, I know!” Klaus beamed, slapping his hands down on his thighs as if he’d just had a brilliant realization. “What if I go for you? I could be your assistant!”
He’d never had a job before - none aside from being part of the Umbrella Academy, anyway - and he wasn’t quite sure what it would entail, but he figured it couldn’t be that bad, right? He was terrible when it came to being on time, to meeting deadlines and just being even slightly reliable, but hey, this would be a one-time thing, right? Or an occasional thing. Something like that.
He was good with people. He was personable, he could be really charming when he wanted to, and he liked to think that he could make a good sales pitch. He could be good at this, he figured, and it he was... Well, it’d be fun.
You went there again, didn’t you?

What’s it like to have a good father
a what
zsix:
❝ yes you can. you don’t have a choice. why it’s important doesn’t matter. ❞ there is resolve in his voice, but of course it matters to klaus. he can’t keep him in the dark, ben knows that. but wasn’t dying enough?
does klaus think the years spent training left ben unequipped to handle the horrors, that it was simply a misstep of footing? no; it’s more than that. it’s knowing what their father is capable of, what luther wants from him ( from all of them ), and being unwilling to continue to participate. brash, maybe, but meaningful. so he hopes.
still, he can no longer reach out and take klaus by the shoulder and guide him, can no longer turn to his dresser the way he wants to and stubbornly announce, fine, i’ll start packing for you, idiot, the way he wants to.
what he does instead is touches the air just over klaus’ shoulder, fingertips glowing an eerie blue. ❝ it’s not illegal to engage in torture or extreme conditioning of legal adults with consent, ❞ ben says slowly. sadly. he brings his hand down to his lap and drops his head. ❝ we’re going to be eighteen in a few weeks, klaus. ❞ we. not quite.
now ben rises from the bed. claps his hands, knowing only klaus can hear. his look is pleading and questioning all at once. don’t you want to get out? don’t you trust me, do you want to do this forever or will you go? please?
❝ i’ll be with you every step of the way, okay? we’ll figure this out. we just need to go. ❞
He knows what Ben is trying to say.
Or at least he thinks that he does. But it can’t be true, can it? Of course, Klaus had taken the time to think about the way that he and his siblings have been brought up. He’s taken the time to try and compare their experiences with that of most others, from what little he knows about them. And knows, somewhere deep inside his mind, that this is all wrong.
Somewhere in his mind, he’s already called out Reginald for exactly what he is, just as he’s fairly certain he’s heard Diego mutter under his breath on more than one occasion.
Unlike his brother, he’s been unwilling to voice it in quite so simple and straightforward terms. He’s made his jokes, though, cold as they may be when one breaks them down. It’s easier to deal with it like that. He far prefers it.
Still, hearing Ben’s words... It chills him to his bones. He wants to deny it, he wants to say that he must have misread whatever was in those files and notebooks that their father never let them see, but he knows that Ben has no reason to lie, no reason to want anything but to help them. And if Ben isn’t lying, then he’s right and -
He should be ready to go, he tells himself. He should be, because he’s dreamt of this for so long, and he’s never thought of himself as being attached to the this place, to this life. He’s wanted to escape it for as long as he can remember. So why isn’t leaving easier?
“Ben, he’s not - he can’t - “ He wants to argue, but the words leaving his mouth just seem wrong. He knows everything he’s trying to say is wrong before the sentence even finishes forming itself in his mind. “We can’t just go. Can we?”
He feels like he’s standing at the edge of a precipice, and he knows it won’t take much to knock him down either way. It’d be just as easy to convince him to go as it would be to frighten him into staying as he’s been frightened many, many times before.
“Whatever you’re not telling me, Ben, I -” He swallows, eyes stinging with tears once again, though this time they don’t roll down his cheeks, just welling up in his burning eyes. “I need to know. Please, I can’t - I can’t just go, I... I don’t know the first thing about being on my own, and - and Dad’s not going to let us go so easily, and what - what if the others don’t come with me? I can’t leave them behind, I can’t -”
He shook his head, needing to take a moment to catch his breath.
Life is hard. Bad things happen. Good people die. Wow, playing the dead card again, huh? You need new material, bro. I was talking about Dave.
Klaus: I’m into dark humor.
Dave, turning off the lights: Do you wanna hear a joke?
Klaus: I love you.

zsix:
if there was any way he could fix things without asking anything of klaus, ben would take it. there’s simply not: it has to be him, and it has to be now. he’s been waiting for 17 years.
klaus is soft in a way the rest of them never were, and this is never lost on ben. he does what he can to make it all easier on him. bringing snacks to share while they listen to whatever audio mom’s given them to study. smiling at the tension-laced dinner table. it’s okay. you’re okay.
dying didn’t change this in him, but maybe now ben feels some urgency he can’t shake.
❝ klaus, ❞ he says again, wanting to soothe him. he walks over to the bed and sits down. unlike every other time before, there will be no shift in the weight of the mattress, no dip to show the world that he’s there. should klaus try to lean against him, there would be nothing there. no warmth, no presence. to the rest of the world, ben exists only in a box underground now.
maybe he needed a little time to process that. but now he touches klaus’ shoulder, or tries to, the way he would to comfort him. there’s a blue haze where his hand is. where it should be.
❝ you have to leave. tonight. ❞ ben’s words are quiet and regretful. ❝ i’ve been in dad’s study reading all the stuff he doesn’t let us see. and… i just think you should go. we should all go. ❞
❝ i think diego will follow you. and allison. but i’ll stay with you no matter what. i promise. ❞
Leave.
It’s not something Klaus hasn’t thought about before. He has, so many times. And he’s done it before, too - snuck away in the middle of the night, planning on never coming back. But he always did, because he could never leave his brothers and sisters behind. There were times when he desperately wished that he could, but even during the darkest of times, he always knew that he wouldn’t be able to live with himself if he did.
But now there Ben is, asking him to leave and telling him that Diego and Allison will follow.
And that’s most of them now, isn’t it? There’s Luther, who Klaus is fairly sure could never be convinced to go against their father, and Vanya, who he’s pretty sure is looking into music colleges and therefore leaving soon on her own, so it’s the best headcount he could possibly ask for in their exodus.
And yet he’s petrified.
The truth is that he’s never had to face the real world before. It has to be better than life with Sir Reginald, he knows that, but he’s scared. Scared of the ghosts that may await him out there, scared of the prospect of a life that’s completely alien to him. How do people live out there? They have jobs, he knows that much. How do they get one? How do they find a place to live? He’s heard of bills, but he’s never paid one. He’s not sure where you even find them.
Sir Reginald never prepared him for life on his own, and now Ben is pushing him to leave at a moment’s notice.
His gut tells him to listen to Ben. It tells him that he’s asking this because it’s important. But his gut has also never lived on its own, so what does it know?
“Ben what...” He swallows, eyes filling up with tears again but now for an entirely different reason. He’s been dreaming of the day one of them would snap and leave and the others would follow in their wake for so long, so why is it so terrifying now that it’s finally happening? “What did you see? What did Dad write? I - I can’t, I - Ben, why is this so important?”
[sighs]
