SKIN PICKING & RAW CHEEKS
━ a ben hargreeves self para.
triggers: anxiety, anxiety attacks, parental neglect, abuse (emotional & physical), self-inflicted injuries (anxiety-induced), drug use, alcohol use, blood mentions, death mentions.
mentioned: klaus hargreeves, reginald hargreeves, five hargreeves, pogo
safety. that’s how ben feels as he slowly sinks into the usual cushion he has taken a liking to. the soft blanket is rested next to him, as his therapist has taken a keen observation to - ben likes to move his fingers while he talks about hard topics. he usually focuses his time at picking at his cuticles, digging at them until the red spots form, warning him to stop. he lets out a soft breath, smile forming on his lips as he turns towards his doctor. she was kind, soft-spoken and always had a variety of fidget necessities lined up for ben to use while he navigated through his thoughts.
‘ do you remember our agenda today? ’
he’s thankful she can’t see his internal workings without him opening his mouth. he remembers, absolutely he does. he thought about cancelling this session for days, staring at her number in his phone. this wasn’t a topic he was invested in talking about.
‘ yeah. yeah, i remember. ’
hands move quickly to the blanket, slowly moving slim fingers along the end of it, feeling each stitch the maker made.
‘ okay. so let’s start from the beginning. ’
CHILDHOOD
he doesn’t remember the exact first time that he has felt the tightening in his chest, but he had been much to frightened to run to his father. his father, although he adored him at a young age, was an intimidating man, someone that you never wanted to let down and that’s what ruled ben’s mind since he could properly think in sentences. the intense pressure of being perfect, was enough to have the shovel in ben’s hand, in his mind, and begin digging out the hole in his brain that was dedicated to helping his esteem.
he does, however, remember who helped him as the weight caved into his chest and his hands began shaking beyond his control. (not that he could openly explain that pogo wasn’t human), the soft affirmation by pogo allowed ben’s fears and worries begin to slowly lock themselves into small boxes. pogo’s fingers would move along the lines engraved in ben’s hands, tracing them in a light fashions and lightly humming a song that ben, to this day, kicks himself for not asking what it was.
his first stroke of physical abuse came at the age of ten. ben was a quiet individual, he didn’t tend to step out of bounds when it came to free time in the hargreeves house. he was usually found researching how to make things, wanting to get crafty with his hands. but soon ben began to notice the absence of another sibling, one that he had managed to take a liking to - and ben liked to play favourites.
‘ father? ’
his voice was quiet as he peeked into reginalds office with a tiny smile on his face. curiosity killed the cat, he could hear mother whispering in the back of his mind. ‘ im just wondering if five is ill? i haven’t seen them around lately and -- ’
he could barely finish before reginald’s hand was raised and making its way against his cheek. a stern warning to never ask such stupid questions. ben backed out of his fathers office with his hand tightly against his cheek and tears stinging his eyes. he was simply worried about his brother, wasn’t that the type of loyalty his father would want?
either way. satisfaction did not bring him back. fear brought him straight to pogo.
he hisses, looking down at his hands. he had managed to pull his attention from the blanket to his fingers, yanking at skin that clearly did not want to come out for a purpose. he’s quick to move his thumb to his mouth, the metallic taste filling his mouth and mixing with his spit as he innocently looks up at his therapist.
‘ i know. i know, i’ve been trying. i haven’t been biting my cheek so much, though! which means less canker sores! ’
she gives him words of encouragement, which allows his shoulders to relax. he sometimes forgets this is a safe space, somewhere that he won’t be harmed if he expressed himself. hell, this woman was the one that told him his diagnosis of anxiety and didn’t look at him as though he was a failure like his father would have. he could only think of the words reginald would use towards the diagnosis (useless, stupid, weak, attention-seeking). the words didn’t stop as he took in the deep breath. and they didn’t stop when they took a long drink of his water. it definitely wasn’t going to stop as he touched upon the next subject.
KLAUS
at first it wasn’t horrible. sure, not living was a horrid consequence for things he couldn’t even control. the last few minutes of breathing were black in his mind, repressing the memory so that he never had to deal with it again.
having klaus to converse with wasn’t horrible. although he always felt bad for the looks that klaus would get if someone entered a room in the middle of their conversations. but klaus kept things interesting. they always made sure that crosswords were close by, knowing that it was one of ben’s favourite things to do - however ben wasn’t a big fan of klaus writing stupid words down and completely ignoring him. only to shoot i told you so in their face when the word wouldn’t fit with others.
it wasn’t always sunshine and rainbows, however. and ben hated having to watch his sibling suffer in such a way. he knew when it was starting to get bad. he began to notice the tics that would be shown through klaus’ actions or speech, how their speech would get an octave higher and words would jumble together quickly. ben would try - he would try to push through the crowd, digging his fingers into the shoulders of the ghosts that were attempting to flood klaus’ mind and field of vision.
‘ im right here! ’
his voice would travel, sometimes managing to get towards the recipient he wanted. other times, ben would have to see the aftermath.
this is when his cheek biting began. sitting there, thankful that klaus was smart enough in the moment to roll themselves over on their side. at first, ben was confused as to what klaus was doing to crash so hard by the time the fog of ghosts would disappear. then as years passed, the naïve nature that would fog his own judgement allowed him to put two and two together. a whole new anxiety emerged - an anxiety that picked at his mind every second of the day.
what if no one could help?
he tried his best to talk to his sibling, wanting to get through to them that there had to be better way.
screaming was where the conversations would lead, ben being pushed out when klaus decided enough was enough in the conversation and ben having to feel himself being yanked back into his own dimension. the loneliness and darkness usually taking over, causing him to hold his knees tightly to his chest, rocking himself back and forth as he slowly hummed the song that pogo would, praying it would cause the panic to subside.
ben was always there when klaus would awaken, however. sitting without judgement on his face, only worry. after being kicked down by words in his own life, ben rarely opened up about the rawness of his cheek, or how his chest would tighten as the seconds passed when klaus wouldn’t wake early enough. it wasn’t a physical illness - as reginald enjoyed pointing out. he was doing it to be weak and childish. using it to get out of his duty and follow through with tasks.
it became a regular. ben fighting through the ghosts in hopes to yell at klaus that everything will be okay. watching from afar as klaus would fall into the bliss that came from the bottle or the line that was sniffed moments prior. watching as his sibling would smile and have the time of their life - something that ben, naively, wanted to never stop.
but then there were times that ben tried to reach out. yelling out a broken yelp when klaus’ arm would go right through his hand. the endless times ben would sit there, sobbing and waiting for klaus to wake up so that he wouldn’t feel alone anymore.
he didn’t want to admit that sometimes he wished that pogo had been the one that could see him. it wasn’t due to lack of love towards klaus, but klaus wasn’t aware of the song. didn’t know that ben would mimic his breathing to the tracing of the lines on his palms. klaus didn’t know that ben yanked on his hair when he was anxious, because it helped from his body going numb. klaus didn’t know that ben’s go-to position was to sit with his knees to his chest ----
his eyes are focused on the table legs, his body rocking back and forth as tears stream down his face. he couldn’t feel his body, he knows that it is there, but he feels as though he is floating. for a moment, his heart speeds up at the idea that he is once again dead. that he is no longer living.
then, he feels her hand on his knee. he hadn’t realized that he managed to nod his head in agreement of her touching him. it comforted many of his thoughts, the warmth that began seeping through his jeans and against his skin, allowing him the moment of satisfaction to know he’s alive and he’s okay.
he’s not sitting next to a passed out klaus. he’s not hiding from his father in his bedroom after a verbal attack on his mental health status. he’s not in his basement apartment, rocking back and forth in fears that nothing is real and that he is just ruining everything by being alive again.
he’s safe and once their eyes meet, he sees the smile on her face as she hands him a piece of paper.
‘ the song you were humming. ’
his heart leaps, tears forming in his eyes, however the tears have a different sentiment. his whole body ignites with love, memories of pogo and the moments that pogo would tell him that he isn’t defected or abnormal. when pogo would lightly move hair out of his face and tell him that he’ll make an excellent man one day.

BIG HEARTS CAUSE BIG HEARTBREAKS
━ a beth march self para.
triggers: car accident, panic attack, anxiety, mention of death.
mentioned: rue bennett, amy march, jules vaughn, betty cooper, fezco reyes.
elizabeth march had always been an empath. she felt everything, she didn’t even know fezco, but her hands got clammy because of the way jules’ eyes kept moving around anxiously. her stomach ached when she saw the state of rue. her whole body never felt like her own when others were hurt, her body would react like those around. but she never complained. she liked knowing so she could at least have an idea on how to help.
she gently moves her hands through rue’s hair, eyes moving around the waiting room, eyes always capturing someone new entering the place. then it’s betty who is rushing in. she doesn’t think about it at first. half the town probably knew fez, by the way jules and rue talk, he was a very likeable person.
then their eyes connect and there is fear that rushes through beth’s body. her whole body goes numb. she almost knows before she does, her chest trying to cave in as she slowly gets up, moving - floating - towards the blonde.
amy.
that’s all beth needed to hear to feel as though she hit a brick wall. she stands there, everyone becoming background as she can feel the tingling sensation take over her hands and begin working its way up her arms, inching closer and closer to her chest, desperate to get to her lungs.
it had been exactly three weeks and five days since beth had her last panic attack.
she doesn’t make eye contact as she thanks betty. the words car accident echoing in her mind as she takes a step back. she doesn’t even talk as she moves around rue and jules, making her way towards the bathroom. locking the door behind her as her petite body sinks to the floor.
amy. the artist. the one who is so particular about her nose despite being beautiful so effortlessly. the actual light of beth’s life. the one that would giggle into the night with beth when the other march sisters were trying to get rest. amy, the one she helped homeschool and taught how to plant accordingly. who she held during reading letters from father.
eyes close tightly as the tears fall. chest heaving as her hands shake in her lap. count to ten. well she damn well tried, but she can’t stop the hitched breath, one hand raising to her chest, clenching tightly to her top as she lets out the sobs, the fears of losing her baby sister.
beth had always been okay with her own passing. she had accepted it and prayed until her last breath that her sisters would be okay after she went to sleep forever. but amy. amy didn’t deserve this. she had such a happy life ahead of her.
how was she supposed to see without the light of her life guiding her?
triggers: alcoholism, parental neglect, drug use, blood, self injury
mentioned: monica gallagher, frank gallagher, lip gallagher, carl gallagher, debbie gallagher, ian gallagher, liam gallagher, alex karev
she doesn’t entirely feel like she’s walking as she’s finally convinced to get out of the car, her keys in alex’s hand as she doesn’t trust herself to not simply turn around and make a bolt for it.
she’s proud of him. outstandingly proud, it takes guts to admit that there is a problem, and even more guts to admit when you need help. lip had always been one of the strongest though. he had picked up fiona when she was down, while also taking care of the other kids that were left in the shitty house their parents would call shelter.
frank and monica should’ve never had children. yes, she’d even say that when putting her own life in the equation. she never felt good enough. not with the last name gallagher attached. no matter where she went, it seemed like the name would haunt her. she found frank at the bottom of the beer bottles she’d drink, in the mirror after a long night of partying. she found monica in her thoughts, a lot more than she wanted.
she can find monica right now, itching that annoying part of her brain that continues to chant shut it off. the images of the white powder flashing behind her corneas, reminding her of the bliss she could enjoy right now. but what good would that do? not only would alex be disappointed. but how the fuck would she explain to lip that she got high the same day she dropped him off at rehab.
she’s exhausted. if she were to be honest. not that she would be - to everyone, she’s fine. she’s fiona gallagher. she has no choice but to be fine. since the age of nine, she was forced to put her own emotions aside to make sure a diaper was clean or a child was bathed and fed.
since the age of nine, fiona gallagher knew to put her father and mother on their sides at night with pillows stacked along their backs to make sure they didn’t choke when they slept.
the door closes behind her in a soft click. her eyes are bloodshot, face drained. why didn’t she just stay with carl? she was sure he wasn’t exactly okay either. carl would’ve understood what she was feeling, how she was so fucking proud and so broken all at the same time.
but then she cracks. the tears aren’t allowing her time to pull back because he doesn’t know. as much as carl understands to a point - he will never understand the love that she felt for her siblings. how proudness feels on her end, knowing that she was the one that raised them to be so amazing. that it was her that did it all.
she made sure lip graduated. she was the one who held ian’s hand when he entered the psych ward. she brought debbie breastmilk when they were trying to get her daughter back. she made liam promise to not be a dick. she took the braids out of carl’s hair and hugged him off to military school.
not frank.
not monica.
her.
the crying doesn’t seem fit anymore. her hands clench at the sides of her sink as she finally takes in the deep breath. the scream echoes around the house, one foot lifting to kick at the wall as her hand reaches up, connecting harshly with the mirror.
droplets of blood begin to coat the white sink, shards of glass scattered on the floor as she stands there. tears falling down her face as the laugh begins to bubble out of her throat.
she’s found beside the tub, knuckles torn, manic laughter bursting through her chest and tears coating her cheeks.
she’s nine when it first happens. at least the first time it is noticed. veronica is situated at the kitchen island, reading the business section of the paper as her youngest daughter stops what she is doing to frantically move things around the cupboards. every cup is facing the proper way and they are colour coordinated to her liking.
it then gets worse as she enters middle school. every single teacher looks at her, knowing she is a hastings. the pressure of perfection continues to rest of spencer’s shoulders as she looks at the long list in front of her of all the advanced classes and clubs she was going to involve herself with.
she had to make them proud. she had to be the next melissa hastings.
it isn’t her sisters fault. hell, melissa had it just as bad growing up. that came to light the more spencer began to finally talk to her sister during the investigation of alison. she watched as her sister had her own meltdowns. proving that having the hastings name just cursed you no matter how high you are put up on a pedestal.
she’s found organizing her shoes the day after alison disappears. shining them even though if she leaned close enough that she would be able to see her reflection. books are scattered around her room, eyes consistently peeking out of the window in hopes that she will see the blonde hair flash. but it never comes. which causes her chest to tighten, suddenly the organization is just a clutter and she’s clenching her chest as tears stream down her face.
she’s told to get up and stop acting dramatic by her father.
aria had always been her closest friend. it wasn’t that she didn’t enjoy the others, but there was something about aria that gave spencer an area to feel free. there was no pressure, which is why she allows aria to reach over at the ceremony to stop her hand from organizing her paper bills from largest to smallest with every bill facing the same way. instead, she finds herself turning her hand around and tightly holding onto hers.
she’s seventeen when she finally gets her diagnosis. only because of her own fears of how organized she is finding herself lately. she’s tired of being told she’s dramatic, that she is being a disappointment with how horribly she is handling herself.
if only they knew that her phone beeping meant.
she doesn’t like to talk about it. but he makes it easy. he doesn’t pressure her, he supports her. he makes sure that she swallows her medication each morning and night. makes sure that everything is organized when she isn’t having a good day. he is her life line. although she loves aria, dearly, she feels as though she would be lost without kol. he’s managed to take care of her in ways she’s never experienced.
she lays beside him, listening to his breathing next to her. a peaceful noise as she stares at the stars shining through the small area of the window that is not covered.
she’s better. she knows she is better. but there is always that chatter in the back of her mind, sounding exactly like her mother and father. with a following snicker from the one and only melissa fucking hastings.
WHEN IS IT MY TURN?
━ a rebekah mikaelson self para.
triggers: sexual intercourse mentions, self-loating, low self esteem, death.
mentions: niklaus mikaelson, kol mikaelson, marcel gerard, mikael mikaelson, esther mikaelson.
since when do you let a man tell you what to do?
it wasn’t as though they meant to hurt rebekah. hell, if rebekah had been in a more stable mindset, she would have laughed and made a joke but the words cut like a blade. entering her flesh and digging into her heart like it had so many times during her time as a vampire. tossed to the side when she was too dramatic or too much of a liability.
that’s all she ever was. someone to keep people entertained until they were tired of antics. tired of her asking for attention that she was already receiving. or the tantrums, despite her not wanting to act in such a way.
you’re a woman on the outside. a child inside that is just begging to be enough for someone. to be more than just a pair of tits and a pretty face. you want to be more. you want to be seen as a forever. you want someone to hold you and tell you they love you and actually mean it.
she can’t remember the last time that she was told she was dearly loved without having to beg for it. not that she blames kol for such things. they are different in personalities and she is very aware that if she showed up in tears that kol would have his weapons loaded and ready to confront anyone that hurt her.
but a part of her hates that she has to show up in tears for someone to show they care. hates how she wakes up one day and everyone is bored of her. tired of having to always think of new ways to have someone love her and continue loving her.
first it’s marcel. the love that is always lingering. a missing piece of you, despite the horrid way that he treated you. you can still feel his hands on you when your eyes are closed at night. trying to enjoy the feelings of safety in the darkness, hand dipped between your legs as you dream of being enough for him. but he never wanted you. he wanted a step up. wanted to manipulate you to get to your brother.
then there is klaus. he was never a love, but your devotion managed to ruin you. you were so dedicated that you managed to forgive him everytime he would hold onto your shoulder and watch as the life drained from your eyes, the dark grey colour covering your otherwise flawless features. he never loved you, you were always a pawn in his game. but you felt wanted.
not even your parents wanted you. the fear of running away from your parents for centuries, having to fight them to stay away. the anger that you felt because it was their fault you were like this. it was your mother that fed you the blood - your father that drove his sword through your stomach without blinking an eye.
so the question still remains.
since when do you let a man tell you what to do?
well. always. why? because she doesn’t know how to be alone. she doesn’t know how to love herself when she has never watched someone else love her.
HE WOULD NEVER FORGET A CAT SCAN
━ a derek shepherd self para.
triggers: inadequate medical help, death, life support, car crash.
mentioned: amelia shepherd, zola shepherd, ellis shepherd, meredith grey.
he’s standing outside the room. hand against his lips as he is holding back his tears. he was derek shepherd. how the fuck could he have let this happen? the damn kid was almost as old as his eldest daughter, now living on machines that are forcing oxygen into his lungs and he’s having to feel the weight of that on his shoulders as he tells the parents.
realistically? it wasn’t his fault. the case was a hard one. one that derek knew might not end perfectly, not to mention there was still brain activity that was being reported - it was not a lost cause. there was still time for his patient to wake up, or even begin moving his fingers and toes, but yet derek slowly sinks down to the ground, eyes never leaving the child across from him on the bed.
apologies continue to fall from his lips. he had been so careful. he had managed to double check everything that was happening in that patients head. he did not make mistakes. not ones that could be easily avoided - he does not make mistakes that costs lives. he is not reckless.
the crash happens on repeat in his mind almost twenty four hours a day, but he does try to keep it silenced. he makes it quieter by associating himself with those around him. forcing himself to go out with the guys, downing beer after beer as though it’s not a coping mechanism. he flirts with his wife and holds her close at night; his mind always wandering to the thought of this being a dream. a cruel joke that is being given to him.
he slowly drags himself into the home. a fake smile forming on his lips as he catches his youngest in his arms, holding her close for longer than usual. he takes in a deep breath of her strawberry shampoo, hands moving up and down her back as his own comfort. she came after. she came before she could even know him. he was ripped away from her due to carelessness.
it’s my head.
it repeats. his eyes close and he sees that damn doctor above him refusing to listen to penny who is begging for them to check his head in a cat scan. then he sees darkness, darkness sinking in as he goes under and he continued to fall until he couldn’t fall anymore and he was stuck watching the lives of those he loved continue without him.
his life was ripped away from him. his happiness was ripped away from him. and for what? why? that was the question that always lingered. sure, he was not a saint, but derek couldn’t understand what he did to deserve such inadequate care by professionals. especially after he had saved multiple lives on that highway before the truck collided with his drivers side.
he lays next to his wife. arm draped over her and holding her close. he watches as her chest moves up and down in a calm motion, indicating she is asleep. it allows him to finally let the tears fall.
he shouldn’t have taken the case. he should have given it to amelia. there was too much similarities. seeing the patient hooked up to tubes pushed him over the edge. made him think that it was his fault. that he did this. that he doesn’t deserve to be here, not anymore than he did years ago.
did he deserve to meet ellis? did he deserve to be holding his wife? did he deserve to hold zola in his arms again?

SELF LOVE? FOREIGN CONCEPT.
━ a mini mcguinness self para.
triggers: anorexia, dizziness ( mentions of past fainting spells ), self-loathing tendencies, vomit, cohesion into sexual intercourse, hospital mention.
mentioned: richie tozier, finnick odair, nick levan, harry bingham.
her room is silent. the way she likes it. she doesn’t have to listen to others, having to answer to their stories as though she gives a shit. the only thing reminding her that she awake is the ticking of the clock on her side table. counting down the time to her supposed dinner time with finnick. only causing her chest to tighten.
her room is also a mess. there are clothes all over the floor, flown around as though she has nothing to wear when in reality - all seem to just focus on her flaws. flaws that aren’t actually there. flaws that are making her question her worth.
when she enters the apartment, she gives a quick smile to richie as she moves past him into the kitchen, opening the fridge door and letting her eyes fall upon all the foods that had managed to pick up during her heightened time. she can think of every recipe she had researched with harry the other night.
instead, she grabs hold of a water bottle, almost slamming the door to the fridge due to her own frustration. one run down, only one more for the day. she might even wiggle her way into a work out before having to think of fitting herself into a cute outfit to impress someone who properly would never love her.
memories flood her memory. feeding the insecurities as if it was yesterday that she felt pressured into giving up her virginity. how nick swore he loved her, only her, but still walked out of the closet with her best friend. losing people was never easy for mini, causing her to convince herself that was the perfect time to let herself up to a man who didn’t deserve that part of her.
in only her underwear. mini is found in front of her mirror once again that day. slim fingers moving over the flat stomach, tracing the lines of her ribs that are beginning to make themselves seen by her lack of nutrients. she knows she should eat. she knows that she shouldn’t cancel but yet she picks up her phone in tears.
not feeling the best. gonna have to cancel.
that’s when it happens. she is running to the bathroom, bent over the toilet as the single smoothie she had that day comes back up. black dots begin to form in front of her eyes, vision getting blurry. she grips tightly to the sides of the toilet, squeezing her eyes shit in hopes to make the spins silence themselves. last thing she needed was for richie to have to handle her body on the floor like the poor person at the gym a week earlier.
it’s seven pm when she’s found in the waiting room at the hospital. she isn’t here for a psych consult. or even to get help. no, she is coming to the only person who has managed to have her back since day one. to see the only person that allows mini to feel as though she is strong enough to overcome this. to love herself.
triggers: self harm, parental neglect, body dysmorphia, drug use & eating disorder mentions ( anorexia ).
mentioned: carl gallagher, shelley mcguinness.
the door closes . eyes close along with it . the only sounds that are echoing in her mind are the creaking floorboards from her car moving around outside the bedroom & the pounding of her heart in her ears . one , two , three . she counts slow , fingers tapping on her covered stomach as the seconds pass .
four , five , six . eyes slowly begin to open , revealing the hazel colour under the glowing disco ball above her head . the pain & broken emotions buried deep , as though she took a shovel and tried to bury them with the rest of her emotions .
seven , eight , nine . head slowly turns to the side , seeing the corner of the baggy she had gotten from carl earlier peaking out from under her books . hidden away from her company , not wanting to explain that her one time use was becoming much more than that .
ten . finally , mini allows the breath she had been holding be blown out . the aching in her chest slowly subsiding & giving her the ability to snap back into her new reality . the reality where grace wasn’t dead - but every other part of her life was still utter shit .
sitting up , she moves her legs around , feet tingling once they touch the cold floor . she’s moving in slow motion as she pulls her underwear back up her legs , pushing her hair out of her face as she closes the distance between her and the baggy .
the line is made without her realizing , petite frame leaning down with the dollar bill rolled up & took in the deep breath that her body was craving .
standing up , head tilting back , mini allows the drugs to rush upwards . tingle as they move through her system and ignite the numbness that was needed to complete the day .
turning , she finds herself face to face with the mirror . head tilting to the side , brunette locks falling down to rest along her back & shoulder , arms bending to let her slim fingers move across the flat stomach that was located underneath the fabric she had refused to take off .
hair tied up , shirt thrown across the room , she stands in front of the mirror , tears forming in her eyes as fingertips trace the invisible ‘ rolls ’ that are being outlined in her reflection .
oh , what a stunner ‘ya are . tears fall towards her cheeks , the words in the back of her mind , her moms voice telling her what she shouldn’t be eating and what she should be doing to keep the body fat off her body .
why did you fuck my best friend ?
quickly , she grabs a large hoodie , pulling it over her body & quickly jumping into a pair of pajama pants , thankful that when she looks in the mirror that she is no longer bare .
nodding her head , mini begins to hold her breath again , counting down from ten before moving around the bedroom , quickly throwing away any food that was laying around . it wasn’t needed .
she needed perfection . she couldn’t achieve that with all this junk entering her body .
