Ghastly Snacks

Writer’s Block

 “Stupid prat” he thought to himself… “think of how impressed she will be…she will be all over you if you return with some of his slime.  How does he even know it has healing powers."

 “What do you think Spud?”  John’s ever faithful Labrador looked at him quizzically, then flopped down by his feet. 

 "I really should turn back but Tomas would never let me live it down"  "See him .. that’s the eejit that’s afraid of frogs … hahahahaha …. Everyone would be afraid of frogs if they were 20 foot tall!"

 Scratching behind Spud’s ears always made it look like he was paying attention and made John feel less like a loon for talking to himself.

“In hindsight a plan would have been helpful but when you are six sheets to the wind on whiskey everything sounds like a great idea, teeheehee”

 Clouds rolling in on the horizon start to make John a little fidgety.  “Hmm, those could make the trek back down this hill a bit dodgy”. 

 The landscape below was spread out like a patchwork quilt, but there was no sign of the frog.

 “From up here I should be able to make the bugger out.”   A snort was all the recognition he got as Spud nuzzled a laurel plant.

 Suddenly a noise to the left tells him the little bugger found his hiding place first.  John swings around just in time to see a sticky looking tongue slide out of sight behind a boulder.

 “Phew, that was close Spud.  I thought frogs didn’t have a sense of smell ... that absolute pillock … I will kill that Tomas when I get back!”

 The sticky tongue crashes onto the grass to his left, Spud starts to growl.

Writer’s Block

Round like a ball with no edges in sight Spinning and glinting in the moonlight

It’s probably harmless, touch it and see It’s probably harmless, it calls out to me

My brain shouts a warning, I pay it no heed My hand reaches out, it’s probably a seed

In the blink of eye sharp spikes appear It happens so fast I can’t get into gear

My hand recoils back, my legs thrash about The pain is severe I try to cry out

Her smell, her presence fills my senses.

I hear her move towards me.

She says good morning, asks me how I am. Her voice breaks the morning silence like birds waking at dawn.  She is full of life moving softly around me, making me feel safe.

She opens the curtains, tells me how lovely the morning is and how her day has been so far.

That she loves her job but some days people can be so silly she just doesn’t understand them.  

In my minds eye I see her.  She is beautiful.

All I can think is “The best part of my day is the moment I see your face”.  If only I could tell her.

Her work complete she whispers those words…“forever and always”.  I hear the sadness in her voice.

If only I could hold her.

I hear her walk towards the door.  “Now, now is your chance!”

She pauses, I know she is looking at me with sadness in her eyes.

“Just tell her!”

She closes the door and is gone.

The room is silent, her face fades from memory and the darkness creeps in.

The only sound to keep me company is the beep of the heart monitor.
