All those are unofficial and available on the Google play store as of August 13th 2025. They mirror AO3's content and insert ads, for which the developer gets paid by page impression (that's every time the ad appears in the fic you're reading) not just clicks.

No money goes to AO3, nor to the fic writer. It goes to the person who did the bare minimum.

Many of these apps have poorly worded or non existent privacy policies, so they may also be mining as much data as possible and selling that on to unknown third parties.

Please, just use the official AO3 site and the browser.

I’m going to be honest I am annoyed about the influx of fic turned book that’s been happening the last few years. Not every hobby has to turn into a hustle. It also feels disingenuous and like you don’t actually care about fandom and the fanfiction community and it’s just a workshop for these authors. Also I think it’s hedging closer and closer to a crackdown on fics because so many of this books are being marketed as former fics, it’s making this line blurrier and blurrier and the very thin shield that Fair Use has to protect fic writers could easily be stripped. Idk it just feels yucky and nasty to me personally

Not going to be diplomatic but kind of mean with my addition here. But I also think you’re a bad writer if you do this. Because either your fic sucked as a fic or your book will suck as a book, because a good fic is so intrinsic with canon details and remixes and interpretations of the source material, that readers are so excited to read it because it feels like the characters/universe they first fell in love with. If your fic-turned-book can easily be stripped of those nuances, it fails as a good fic. Maybe it was highly readable but it wasn’t good. But, then, if your fic-turned-book cannot be easily stripped of those nuances, it fails as a good book because it’s no longer readable. I have read myself* exactly one fic-turned-book where I had also read the fic version, and one of the highly emotional moments in the narrative fell completely flat in the book because all of the original source material had been stripped away.

*a few of my friends have read fic-turned-books after reading the original fic, a few of my friends have read fic-turned-books that was never actually posted as fic (the Hozier RPF), I have compared the original fics to fic-turned-books, I have unknowingly read a fic-turned-book where I didn’t read the fic but I was familiar with the source material for the fic. The specific one cited above is a fic I read in 2022 that was then turned into a book that I read this year, just to see what could possibly have been changed
