âWitch? Which witch? A witchy witch which, with which, one witchly watches witches?
Because I am no such witch, nor am I any other kinds! Witches arenât in Wonderland. Witches are in Oz!â
Hatter dips the spoon again, then blows more bubbles.
âAre you a witch?â
"Well there goes that theory..." Â
Mami gives a smirk upon hearing Hatter's question, he's obviously talking about witches in the traditional sense. Â "Now I may-" she pauses abruptly and wipes away a burst tea bubble from her eye. Â "-I may be capable of magic but other than that there are no similarities whatsoever between myself and a witch. Â I'm a little offended you asked such a thing to be honest." Â
âOh, sanity is a myth! Iâm absolutely certain!â
Hatter grins wider.
âNot one person Iâve spoken with here possessed a semblance of sanity in their selves! Everyone is positively batty! Itâs marvelous!â
He pulls his spoon out of his teacup, but the spoon is actually a bubble-blower. Yes, he blows tea bubbles.
"I can definitely see where you're coming from. Â This school really is something..." Â And with that thought, Mami feels a sudden sense of clarity and takes a mental step backwards, make that a few steps actually - she's talking nonsense and drinking tea with a madman in the middle of the hallway. Â Just for one fleeting moment she thinks she knows reality - alas - any semblance of reason is broken once again... by bloody tea bubbles. Â "Are you sure you're not just a witch whose barrier I've stumbled into? Â Because that would explain a lot."

Shadow shakes his head.
âI donât consider myself human. I donât consider myself human because I was created in a lab by Doctor Gerald Robotnik, and filled with the blood of an alien named Black Doom. I am not human. I am the ultimate lifeform.â
He smirks at the girlâs second statement.
âFair enough, and I applaud you for responding so quickly. Good to know at least someone would be up and ready to fight off a threat in a matter of seconds.
Official or otherwise.â
He rubs his wrists where they were wrapped earlier.
âIt was chaos control. With this particular technique, I was able to slow time to move at extreme speeds. Coupled with my natural speed and my light shoes, I am the fastest lifeform around.â
Sonic doesnât count in this particular group. Heâs not here. And besides, Shadow could beat that faker any day.
âI donât know what a Puella Magi is, but I assume itâs what you are. Which begs the question, are you considered human?â
Mami didn't know whether to laugh or a little unnerved. Â "That's quite the birth story you have there, and honestly I'm finding it very hard to believe it." Â She stands her musket upright on the floor and uses it as a leaning post, cheek in hand she continues: "And if it is true it's not like you have anything to back it up. Â It's hard to take someone's word on something that outrageous, you know?"Â
Mami can't help but smile at Shadow's praise. Â Before coming to Tancho she never received anything of the sort regarding her combat abilities. Â "Yes, well... Â Considering my previous 'work' had me dealing with monsters - to put it simply - I've become somewhat conditioned to show no hesitation." Â She leans further on her musket and casts her eyes to the side. Â "Probably not the best way to go about things here to be honest..." Â She wasn't facing relentless monsters anymore, but people - and that would require a little more mercy on her behalf.
"Not only the ultimate, but fastest lifeform too?" Â She says, giving an incredulous raise of her eyebrow. Â "Liar or not, you should really sort that ego out." Â But what Mami knew for certain to be true was this chaos control - she had seen it in action firsthand of course, and it intrigued her very much.
"Now that is an incredibly handy power. Â Just don't go abusing it around here, alright?" Â She pauses. Â "But that can't be the only thing you can do, surely?"
Mami nods to both questions and answers with no hesitation. Â "Of course I'm human. Â What, did you think I was something else?" Â The thought had never occurred to Mami that someone might see her as something other than human. Â "And Puella Magis would be more commonly known as magical girls." Â She gives Shadow a quick look up and down. Â Her smile widens. Â "But I get the feeling you're unfamiliar with such a thing."Â
Warming Up || [Closed for Mizore]
She sat on her bed, fan on high next to her as she read. The school newspaper was okay but it didnât update often enough and it wasnât as exciting as it was back home⊠Maybe she should actually go to the club. The last time she tried she just stayed in the small space in the school vents and didnât come out; there was just no subject (or person) able to capture her imagination.
And it was probably this train of thought that stopped her from noticing the presence outside her door until they knocked.
She placed the small newspaper in her sidetable, not bothering to properly close the draw. Her arms felt stiff as she stretched them, looking around the room. â⊠Huh.â She quietly commented as she stood up and walked to the door.
The door inches open and a monotone murmur breaks the silence of J2. âSheâs not in.â
The aloof voice and blue eye peeking from behind the door were unmistakable. Â "But I see that you are, Mizore~" Â Mami gave a sweet smile and a small wave of her hand in greeting. Â "I brought some things I thought you might like," she held up a large bag adorned with a flowery pattern. Â "Peach pie and gelato as well as other things. Â I thought I ought to do something to show my gratitude for... well, you know..." Â
Mami's expression became somewhat sheepish, it was hard to remember the more painful parts of that experience (which was probably for the best) but the one memory that stuck out was something that never failed to embarrass her. Â She averted her eyes and tried to suppress the rising blush in her cheeks. Â "So if it's not a bother, then... may I come in?" Â The possibility that Mizore might refuse her company was something Mami had already considered, and she would be absolutely fine with that. Â Maybe. Â Not really.
Not at all actually.

Pavor Nocturnus âż SoF Open
Admittedly, never before had she ventured to the school roof - for whatever reason. Quite on the contrary, actually, the young woman hadnât - up until that point in time - been fully aware that one could access the roof. That much could be said to be unsurprising, bearing in mind her inexperience with the public system of education in general (let alone one abroad, at that), but she had warmed to the novelty of the idea relatively quickly. What that particular area of the academy was like during the warmer, livelier months, she wouldnât know; she had nothing to compare the rooftop scene with which she had been greeted upon her arrival up there, after all.
Initially, she had but watched the troubled girl sleep from a distance: not continually, certainly, though even in the odd glances over towards her she stole, it didnât take her long to cotton onto the fact that her nap wasnât the most peaceful. It couldnât have been the volume around her that prompted her restlessness - there were only a handful of students up there, idling in the remnants of Augustâs warm weather; even amongst them, the atmosphere seemed subdued, lethargic, even. Bad dreams, then?, she had mused in passing.
Whatever the reason, she hadnât, at that time, given much thought to the matter. She hadnât considered the scene beyond that, beyond a polite, momentary concern, until she caught something out of the corner of her eye. A fall. Near immediately did she approach the other blond: a quick glance about the immediate area to see if anybody else had witnessed the accident before she pushed herself up from her own seat and gingerly approached her. For some moments, she only stood and stared, mouth open slightly as if she were about to say something, but couldnât yet find the words; within due time, she lowered herself to one knee as to speak eye-to-eye, subsequently offering a hand with which to help her up. Tentatively, but, still, the sentiment was undoubtedly there.
âAre you all rightâŠ?â
A question that essentially answered itself, given the situation.
The young lady's voice came through clear as crystal but Mami's expression remained unchanged for the most part - due to the shock from her sudden fall and general disorientation that came out of waking abruptly from a nightmare. Â Mami took another deep breath, composing herself before giving a stiff smile towards the stranger.
"Sort of," she replied breathlessly.  "Just a bad dream, that's all..."  Mami reached up and realised she was still clutching hold of her soul gem, she stuffed it into her blazer pocket and with the same shaking hand, she took the stranger's own outstretched palm and thanked her.  She sat up - a little too quickly than she had intended as a bout of lightheadness overcame her mind, she steadied herself with her other hand and uttered a quiet groan.
"I must have been asleep for a while then," she chuckled wearily.  "How embarrassing..."  She fought to put up a strong front, not wanting to worry the young woman beside her.  It was difficult however, as these particular dreams would leave Mami feeling sick to her stomach. With the stranger's help she soon managed to pull herself up, she stood unsteadily - still holding onto her helper's hand, her crushing grip belying her seemingly casual attitude towards the whole event. "That's very kind of you to come over and help," she smiled and rubbed at one of her eyes, only just noticing just how hard she was holding the student's hand.  She released her grip as casually as she could.  "I just hope I wasn't disturbing anything, I'd hate to be a bother." Â
Pavor Nocturnus âż SoF Open
Autumn was finally settling itself in as the summer waned away.  Despite the change of seasons the weather still remained relatively warm, only a chilly wind that blew through the campus reminded the staff and students of the cold that was to arrive in the upcoming months.  The breeze blew through Mami's curls, ruffling them about as she lay upon one of the benches positioned upon the academy's rooftop.  She stared up at the soul gem she held above her eyes as the clouds drifted lazily behind it.  She had never seen her gem so dark before and the sight of it filled her with a sort of melancholy.  She always assumed she would no longer be able to access her powers if it were to completely darken -  no magic would equate to no fighting witches which meant no grief seeds which meant she'd be stuck as a normal girl.  What good would she be then?
She held her gem tight to her chest and closed her eyes. Â Usually the roof would be filled with the sounds of bustling students enjoying their lunch, but this time only a few had decided to come up here to eat. Â As much as Mami liked company, it was nice to get some peace and quiet sometimes. Â Her eyelids became heavy and she drifted off with the near silence surrounding her. Â
Blinding lights and screeching tyres - Mami awoke with a start and felt a sudden aching pain in her spine and the back of her head. Â She took deep rapid breaths - it'd been a while since she experienced that awful dream during the day, especially one so intense. Â She fought back tears and and slowly craned her neck to see that the ground was closer than it had been before - she had fallen off during her dream-induced spasm - one leg still resting upon the bench. Â She looked to her other side and saw a figure standing right beside her. Â She said nothing and only stared back, face covered in sweat. Â
Hatter gasps.
âThe firsthand Wonderland is the Wonderland, of course! It shouldnât be difficult to guess!
How could it cause you trouble?â
His shocked expression melts away into a grin again.
âYou should visit sometime, methinks!â
Mami lets out a small chuckle. Â "Well it's because I haven't the faintest clue what 'the'Â Wonderland is. Â Although it does sound rather nice..." Â She swirls her tea about in her cup. Â "But if it's populated with people such as yourself then I fear for my sanity... or what's left of it since starting this conversation." Â A sly smile spreads across her face. Â "Maybe I'll fit right in after all."
The avenger and Mami Tomoe
gettingaheadofherself started following you
Avenging eyes dawned over the stranger and her displeasing attire. Unworldly spiralled locks hung from fastens either side of the apparent high maintenance head of golden tresses.. Loathing silently and curling the corner of his mouth; Sasuke snarled before he turned his back on the stranger and lowered his eyelids, gracefully arrogant was the only way to describe his actions.. That was until he opened his mouth.
âDonât even think about wasting my time.â
Ugh, another moody student.  Mami could practically feel the revulsion emanating from him as he turned his back.  Such rudeness was uncalled for and it left Mami with a very unimpressed and almost sour look on her face; she could've easily answered back with some angry retort but taking the immature route wouldn't be the way to go.  Besides, she was tired from her fruitless search for witches and definitely wasn't in the mood for an argument at this time of the night.
"I wasn't planning to," she said with a casual flick of her hair. Â "Anyway it's past curfew. Â What are you doing out here?"
"My, this dropout rate is getting out of hand. Â
I guess this generation really doesn't saviour it's education..."

Shadow smirks when the musket is released.
âNo no. If I wanted to kill you, I would have. If I had any intention on killing you, I wouldnât have simply cocked the gun threateningly.
Youâd have a bullet through your brain and Iâd have blood on my hands.â
He shakes his head.
âBut youâre a human, and Maria wouldnât like me harming humans. I may not remember everything, but I remember that.â
Despite her promise to release him eventually, Shadow still felt the need to push against the ribbons. He doesnât like being restrained.
âOne: the experiment was to see the response time in emergency situations. As a member of the Disciplinary Committee and an agent of GUN, I would feel more comfortable knowing that a timely response would result from the sound of a gunshot in the school.
Obviously the response never came â except for you, but thatâs because you were nearly hit.
Iâll have to step up my defense, I guess, if the security at this school is that terrible.â
He huffs. Itâs annoying how terrible the response was.
âTwo: it isnât magic. Itâs a technique I was given since I was created. I am able to use the power of the chaos emerald to warp the fabrics of time and space to my benefit. Even with just one of the emeralds, I hold immense power in my hands.
If I had all seven, I would be an unstoppable force â my allies and I have proven this fact on multiple occasions â but thereâs no need for that power here.â
Her expression darkens. Â That much was true - Shadow seemed entirely capable of taking Mami's life in no time at all. Â He could very well have pulled the trigger in that moment where he stood behind her - ending her life in an instant. Â The reminder of the fragility of her life leaves her uneasy; but such existential awareness was not unfamiliar to Mami, close encounters with particularly deadly witches had left her with the very same feeling. Â She notices Shadow still struggling and without a word or gesture she releases his binds, they shimmer with a golden glow and dissipate, leaving him free to move his arms.
"From the way you phrased that it sounded as if you don't consider yourself human." Â She shoots him a wary look, this guy seemed far too unhinged for formal education. Â He also didn't come across as the type who would appreciate personal questions, so Mami decided it would be best to leave the subject of this 'Maria' well alone. Â She wasn't in the mood for asking potentially dangerous questions.
The name GUN means nothing to her but she meets Shadow's claim to be an agent with raised eyebrows.  An agent, huh? That would explain the gun. "And as a someone of the Young Justice League I would prefer it if you didn't create unnecessary disturbances.  I technically serve as a member of security so consider this your 'timely response'."  She coughs lightly into her fist.Â
"Warping the fabric of space and..." Â Mami tries put this in a way that makes sense to her as Shadow explains his power. Â That emerald must be the source of his abilities, much like Mami's soul gem. Â "From what I saw, that was either teleportation or some form of time manipulation magic... or technique as you put it," she corrects herself. Â "Interesting... Â I assumed you to be a Puella Magi like myself but I guess that isn't the case from your explanation." Â She holds her chin in thought, could you even get male Puella Magis...? Â
Mami frowns. Â "Wait, what do you mean by being created?" Â She looks up to Shadow with incredulous eyes as he continues his explanation of chaos emeralds and unstoppable power, leaving her face blank with disbelief.
"... Are you sure one of my bullets didn't hit you in the head? Â This 'unstoppable force' business seems a bit much."
Desolation in the Halls â SoF Open
Shadowâs eyes widen as his arms and wrists are constricted, and his gun is essentially rendered useless. Not to mention, when he stopped chaos control, he pocketed the emerald, and itâs little help there. He struggles against his ribbony shackles and gasps out.
âWhat do you think youâre doing unloading in the middle of the hallway?
Just how stupid are you?â
âNo one was in the halls. It was suspiciously quiet. I was doing an experiment.â
He grunts against the ribbons again, then continues.
âI didnât want to hit anyone. You were so damn quiet, I wasnât aware anyone was near. Iâm sorry, I guess.â
God. He hadnât felt this hopeless since he battled Silver for the first time. His psychic powers were definitely a setback, but speed was the way to get around that obstacle. Heâll have to use that against her as well.
âHow did you know Iâm in the marksmen team?â
In his suspicion, Shadow failed to remember attending one of the meetings earlier.
The student's apology had caught Mami off guard. Â Here she thought he had made a deliberate attack against her; but that didn't seem to be the case. Â She lowers her musket slightly, feeling a little more at ease. Â "Nevertheless, that was incredibly reckless of you. Â You're not setting a very good example for someone your junior, are you now?" Â Mami's firm no-nonsense expression relaxes a little.
"And I saw you at the meeting recently, it's hard to forget someone with hair like that.  Not to mention your name, Shadow."  She had seen him a few times down at the shooting range too, and she had to admit - he was a good shot.  Mami thought of reporting him but the academy seemed to be bafflingly lax on gun control, so Shadow was actually doing nothing wrong in owning a gun.  Unless he had injured someone; Mami had no reason to report him.
"This may have been a misunderstanding but you still almost killed me, a 'sorry' won't cut it...  But despite that I don't actually have any reason to keep you restrained," she says begrudgingly as she lowers her musket completely.  "However, before I release you, I'd like some questions answered."  She holds up a finger.  "One.  What sort of experiment requires you to fire aimlessly down a school hallway?"  She holds up a second finger.  "And two.  Just what kind of magic were you using back there?  I've never seen anything like it."  Mami had seen her fair share of magical abilities so coming across something new was rather exciting.Â
Warming Up || [Closed for Mizore]
Anyone else might've knocked without hesitation.  Mami rummaged through her bag for the fourth time, checking she had remembered everything as she awkwardly stood outside dorm J2.  She had already wasted enough time picking an outfit and deliberating whether to wear make up or not, and now she was wasting more even time by just standing there.  She wanted to look presentable as she delivered Mizore's bag of treats to her, but now she started to doubt the amount of care she put into her appearance before arriving.  Is the perfume too much?  The lip gloss?  Would Mizore notice?  Would she care...? Mami laughed to herself and looked down at her shoes.  "Probably not," she said under her breath, putting her insecurities to the back of her mind.
Mami's dawdling had garnered a few confused stares from passing students. Â Upon noticing this she could feel a blush rising to her cheeks. Â Not wanted to be known as 'The girl who laughs outside doors' or any other such name, she told herself to bloody well get on with it and politely knocked on the door once then twice and awaited an answer before quickly straightening out her dress and hair and once again - checking she had brought all of Mizore's gifts.
Desolation in the Halls â SoF Open
Shadowâs eyes widen when he notices a girl in the line of fire. Damn! Where did she even come from? Itâs about that moment, that sudden realization, when he notices that she summoned an arsenal of weapons, the entirety of which pointed directly at him.
He quickly reaches into his pocket and grabs the emerald.
âChaos Control!â
He runs quickly behind the barrage of bullets, now hardly moving due to the technique, and steps behind the girl. He stops chaos control, then cocks his gun again.
âDidnât anyone ever tell you not to play with guns, little girl?â
A shiver runs up Mami's spine as she hears the cold mechanism of the handgun snap behind her.  It's owner undoubtedly being the one who fired at her only seconds ago - those seconds being only what it took to get behind her.  No one could possibly be that fast, teleportation magic is what first comes to mind but it's a little hard to think with a guy holding a gun behind you.  Nevertheless, Mami keeps herself calm and controlled.  "I could say the same for you."  She tilts her head slightly to the husky-voiced young man behind her.  In that moment ribbons upon ribbons suddenly shoot up around her attacker and snake themselves tight around his arm and wrist.  Mami wants his gun hand to be pointing nowhere near her.  She spins to meet him with a newly materialised musket in her hands.
"What do you think you're doing unloading in the middle of the hallway?" Â Her tone makes it sound less like a question and more of a verbal attack. Â "Just how stupid are you?" Â As she speaks she feels a spark of recognition upon seeing the young man's spiked red and black hair, she cocks an eyebrow. Â "A member of the marksmen team no less. Â You really should know better... Â A couple of inches to the right and you would've had my head off." Â Mami narrows her eyes. Â "I certainly hope that wasn't your intention." Â
âOh, Iâm sure the schoolâs psychologist is rather mad as well! Most all of us here are! Itâs like a secondhand Wonderland, wherein the teaching happens!
This secondhandish Wonderland, I understand, is rather grand, and though one hardly cares to stand the unplanned wonders of this land, every girl and man must band together hand in hand â whether from Dixie or Deutschland â must stand and face the Sands of Time to wait for what is planned.â
Hatter grins and bows theatrically.
âThank you very much!â
It's difficult to applaud with a teacup in your hand but Mami did her damnedest to do so.  "It must be nice to come up with rhymes like that off the top of your head.  It actually made sense too!"  She pauses and tilts her head.  "Kind of..."  Glancing into her teacup she asks:  "So if this is a secondhand Wonderland, then what's a firsthand Wonderland?"

setting for two [CLOSED, @Mami)
Misha sat under the tree, a pink-checked blanket laid out underneath her. She figured that if Mami was bringing food, she might as well contribute something to the picnic herself! And besides, this way they didnât get their uniforms too dirty. Of course, she didnât remember specifying which tree the two would meet at⊠but she was sure Mami would be able to figure she meant this one. She seemed intuitive like that. So, she sat against the tree, and waited.Â
It did seem like Mami was taking awhile to get there, though. But maybe she was only exaggerating time⊠Or, maybe she was just taking her time walking there- understandable, it was lovely out.
The sun, now a big orange tipping towards the end of the sky began to tint everything a yellow mask, and the sky started to change its colors, the blue of the afternoon sky being cast off like a girl changing into her night clothes. Though, the more Misha thought of it that way, wouldnât that make the yellows and pinks of the sunset closer to the skyâs underwear? And the blue of the daytime sky is her day clothes, and the black of night is her pajamasâŠ? Then again, who had decided the sky was a girl too?
Misha soon concluded this thought train was frivolous, especially since she spied a familiar head of blonde hair approaching. Flashing her widest smile, she waved frantically, as if Mami would lose sight of her if she failed to continue waving.
âHey, hey~! Over here~!âÂ
Mami never liked to rush or do things halfheartedly, especially when it came to food.  Unfortunately her usual care and attention regarding food and left her pressed for time.  As she gathered together the sandwiches, leftover tarts, teacups and teapot of Darjeeling - a sudden realisation hit her.  She had nothing to carry the food and tea in.  She fretted about the kitchen until an idea came to her.  It would mean meeting up with Misha in her magical girl outfit and possibly explaining what Puella Magis were to her, but Mami was running out of time and ideas.  One transformation sequence later and she was in her battle uniform. "Right," she said, pulling her neck ribbon from her collar, "here goes nothing."
The sun was almost setting by the time Mami had left the dorms, the soul gem adorned upon her head shimmered as the sun's rays bounced off of it. Â She hurried through the grounds, carrying a picnic basket weaved from her neck ribbon. Â She had to admit she did a better job than expected, although it did take her some time. Â "I hope Misha won't be too surprised," she said to herself as she entered the gardens. Â Her short journey there didn't get her as many stares as she initially thought which was quite relieving, she supposed the people in this school had seen stranger things. Â Mami spied the bundle of pink curls before she heard her, she gave an energetic wave back.
"Misha, hello again!" Â She beamed, trying not to disrupt the contents of the basket as she walked faster toward the tree. Â "Sorry I took a while, I couldn't find anything to carry the picnic here so I had to improvise," she said as she sat herself and the basket down beside Misha. Â Inside it was a commendable variety of sandwiches. Â Mami couldn't be sure what filling Misha would like the best so she raided the cupboards and fridge for whatever ingredients she could get her hands on. Â "I made all sorts so please choose whatever you fancy." Â Mami got round to pouring the tea. Â "And I'm so glad you brought a picnic blanket. Â I knew I was forgetting something..." Â She also knew she was getting away from the elephant in the... garden. Â She could be as nonchalant as she liked but it wasn't going to change the fact that she looked like a cosplayer.
Desolation in the Halls â SoF Open
Shadow exits his dorm room quietly, preferring not to make his presence overly knownâ
Or, he would if anyone were around to make his presence known to. The halls are eerily empty from the look of it. Compared to the hustle and bustle of them just hours ago, he was incredibly surprised.
âSomething is definitely suspicious about this school. No doubt about that.â
Shadow continues down the halls, trying to find someone to maybe lift the suspicion. Is there a curfew? Are all students and teachers required to be in their dorms by a certain hour?
Thatâs the most suspicious part. Not even teachers are around. Itâs like a ghost town.
You know that chill you get when you enter a school after hours, when all the classroomsâ lights are off? This is that to the tenth power.
He grabs his gun and loads a round, switches off the safety, cocks it, then fires it down the halls. The resulting bang and clanging of the bullet ricocheting off the lockers creates a deafening echo.
âMaybe thatâll help the situation someâŠâ
Mami wasn't feeling particularly magical girl-y since she first enrolled in Tancho.  Since there were no witches to kill Mami found herself wandering the campus in search of situations where her powers could be put to good use.  Unfortunately for Mami the staff here seemed more than capable of handling certain unruly students and no giant monsters or such had taken a likening to the school, so no luck for her there.  Mami lets out an unabashed sigh as she strolls down the empty corridor.  She hears the eerie echo of another's footsteps behind her, a click then silence.  Mami feels the bullet whiz past her shoulder before she hears it, she no longer thinks and instead acts on instinct.
A flash of light and she's in her battle outfit. Â She twirls round towards her attacker, summoning several rifles behind her and unleashes a volley of golden bullets down the corridor. Â Non-lethal of course, wouldn't want to be killing anyone now would we?
