Like, obviously the easy answer is “oh, translators!  Technology!” But i choose to believe more in a lingua franca that is used between planets since the translators would not be perfect and would probably be a fallback rather than the main form of communication.  

Additionally, those translators probably don’t have a “terran” setting, since terrans haven’t left their planet for the most part and the likelihood of anyone needing to use it would be SO LOW that it just wouldn’t be worth programming it, right?

Okay, so if we headcanon a lingua franca and/or translators that wouldn’t have a “terran” setting, that means that throughout this movie, Peter isn’t speaking English.  Can you imagine him as a kid, slowly picking up the lingua franca from the Ravagers, and shouting at them in English when he got upset?  Can you imagine older Peter, older, getting upset and starting to rant in English, but while the Ravagers think he’s going off and cussing up a storm, he’s really just upset that his sandwich was crap and is complaining about the dry bread or whatever?

And that would mean that also NO ONE WOULD UNDERSTAND THE LYRICS OF THE MIXTAPE.  When Gamora listens to his music and says “the melody is pleasant”?  She can only COMMENT on the melody, ‘cause she has no idea what the song’s saying.

AND RONAN.

Imagine the scene.  Peter starts dancing.  Ronan is confused.

Peter: Listen to these words. Ronan: [Basically hearing this.]
