"You'd think I wouldn't be." Sam let out an airy laugh, leaning back against the headboard. "I have to kill Lilith and find a way to stop the Apocalypse? No pressure." Dean was gone. Not dead. Which was... good, given their track record, but the two had argued again this morning, and that wasn't helping anything. He was in yet another hotel room with Alec, trying to figure out what his next step should be - while Dean was God knows where, trying to cool off. Sam didn't know when or if he'd return. He was rooting for the former option.

But that wasn't the only reason he was afraid.

He'd been... keeping something from Alec. In a perfect world, he would've told the Leviathan from the get-go, but something inside of him kept begging him not to. He was so used to losing people, and losing Alec? Sam didn't know if he'd be able to go through with all of this on his own. Still, he had to say something, because he didn't feel right keeping secrets when he barely trusted who he was becoming. "I have to... tell you something." He half-whispered, eyes landing on his companion.

Those eyes. Sam could usually look at them all day long. Today they pierced right through him, making him feel too seen, as Alec did, so he found himself pulling away to steal a glance at the wall. He took a deep breath and grounded himself, trying not to think about all the ways this could go wrong. "My powers are getting harder to control. I've been... uh- taking desperate measures to contain them." He wasn't even sure that was the truth. He wondered if Alec could see how unsure he was in all of this. "I was on my own for a while, and during that time I figured out that demon blood helped me get stronger. So... I've been... drinking demon blood, and it's been helping. Mostly."

I think I might need it to survive.

It was over. Probably. You never knew when it came to Hawkins. Steve wouldn't be surprised if something new popped up in a month, causing them to find each other again and fight some monster ass. What he did know was that things felt... different. Lighter. Like a weight had been taken off the town. The air felt more breathable, the sense of impending doom - especially at night - was almost nonexistent. Maybe that was enough for them to keep the hope, for now.

It almost felt too normal. He'd been living on the edge for years now - glancing behind his back while walking down the street, making sure the kids were all accounted for when they went to some big event. Life, while it was what they'd all wanted, was... strange. It was like Steve had lost a part of himself while gaining another. He had to get used to this new norm. He had to grow up. How did one get used to a life he never thought he'd have again?

Now they all had to face reality. Find a job. Start a family. Hope that somewhere out there, there was more for them than this small, damaged town. Maybe that's why he stood in front of the Wheeler household, staring up at the windows that had somehow wedged itself into his life. It felt familiar. It felt like El, and the scientists, and the creatures that had tried so hard to take them down. But that wasn't the only reason he was here.

When the front door opened, Steve stood face-to-face with Jonathan Byler. Which was... perfect, considering that was who he'd come to see. He half-expected Joyce to open the door, given her track-record of checking to make sure her guests were... actual guests, but - judging from the quiet atmosphere of the living room - it didn't look like anyone else was home. He stepped inside, making sure not to shove Jonathan out of the way in the process.

"What, no hey? How've you been since the whole..." His words trailed off, deciding what he'd been trying to say wasn't actually funny. Steve shoved his hands into his pockets and walked further into the house. "Where's the rest of the crew?" He asked, eyes moving from the ceiling to the staircase, then back to Jonathan. It was probably better than no one was home. It'd make this way less awkward. Steve wondered what Jonathan, Will, and Joyce were going to do, since their real home was in California.

"I just wanted to say thank you for saving my life." His eye definitely twitched as the words left his mouth, but he tried not to think about that. Apologies were hard, but no one ever talked about how a 'thank you' was just as weird. "Without you, I'd be at the bottom of... somewhere." Steve laughed, but it didn't meet his eyes. He didn't like to think about what would've happened if Jonathan wasn't there.
