…….. why is there so much drarry???
The church of Notre-Dame de Paris is still no doubt, a majestic and sublime edifice. But, beautiful as it has been preserved in growing old, it is difficult not to sigh, not to wax indignant, before the numberless degradations and mutilations which time and men have both caused the venerable monument to suffer, without respect for Charlemagne, who laid its first stone, or for Philip Augustus, who laid the last.
On the face of this aged queen of our cathedrals, by the side of a wrinkle, one always finds a scar. Tempus edax, homo edacior [Time is a devourer; man, more so].
Victor Hugo, Notre-Dame de Paris: Book Third, Chapter I. Notre Dame (trans. Isabel Hapgood) Eugène Atget, Notre Dame, Paris, 1926.

Story inspired by the wonderful @sillysaddass
The next day found Draco in much the same situation, except the class in question was double potions and sitting next to Potter meant they’d have to work together. Draco quickly looked around as he mentally panicked but there were only two open seats left. He could sit next to Potter or Finch-Fletchley, the hufflepuff.
Draco sat down next to Potter with a sigh.
“What?” Potter said defensively.
“Nothing,” Draco said, “Good morning, Potter. I look forward to working with you.”
“You do not,” Potter shot back. He paused an shook his head in disbelief, “You don’t. You hate working with me. Especially in potions.”
Draco hummed absently in response as Slughorn came into the classroom.
“Morning!” Slughorn said jovially, “Since a few questions about the Wolfsbane potion will be on the NEWTS, I thought it would benefit you all to brew it once. Damn tricky potion. You’ll want to take your time and care; we’ve only enough ingredients for one go each. Page two hundred and twelve in your books. Take care not to let the aconite touch your skin! Use gloves and tongs. Feel free to ask me any questions!”
Draco watched the lazy bastard fold his hands over his stomach without any other advice or interest. He wrinkled his nose in disgust, Severus might have been vicious, but at least he was more than competent at his job.
Potter had his book open and was reading the instructions as closely as Draco had ever seen from him. Then again, Potter’s abilities to brew had apparently been a fluke in sixth year.
Draco took out his brewing notebook and flipped to the notes he had taken brewing wolfsbane over the summer, “Shall I get the ingredients or would you rather do it?” he asked.
Potter’s head jerked up from his book, and he blinked at Draco then seemed to shake himself awake, shooting his feet, “I’ll get them,” he said quickly.
Draco retrieved a silver lined pewter cauldron and started a low flame beneath.
“Malfoy,” A Weasley sort of voice hissed behind him.
Draco turned, looking at Weasley and then to Granger beside him. He decided to keep looking at her since he was unlikely to want to hex anyone with Granger’s expression of suspicion and general disappointment in him as a human being boring into him.
The two exchanged a look that could best be summarised as you talk to him.
Draco glowered at them.
Granger huffed faintly and crossed her arms, “Malfoy… we-” she glanced at Weasley who nodded encouragingly, “- we would appreciate it if you left Harry alone.”
Draco raised an eyebrow.
Granger frowned but continued, “He finally has a chance at a normal school year. Even you can understand wanting normalcy can’t you?”
“Yes,” Draco said warily.
Granger nodded, “Good, so, the last thing Harry needs is to be ob- worrying about you.”
“Here,” Potter dropped a tray of ingredients on the work table.
Draco jumped, his heart thundering his chest. He quickly turned back to his cauldron, scowling briefly before wiping the expression off his face.
Draco carefully examined the ingredients, “This won’t do,” he picked up the piece of bone and held it out to Potter, “Also get more aconite.”
Potter’s shoulders drew back, his eyes flashing with anger, “What? It’s perfectly fine, isn’t it? Just bone! And what’s wrong with the aconite?”
Draco bit the inside of his cheek. He said tightly, “Bone is very porous and can easily absorb trace amounts of other elements. Yellowing in this instance might mean contamination. So please find one that is white and smooth to the touch. As for the aconite, the levels of toxicity varies between the leaves, flowers and roots. This,” he pointed at the tray, “is mostly stem and root. It would work provided it was pulverised and soaked in the base overnight. We’re brewing now, so we need leaves.”
Potter took the bone, his anger mixing with embarrassment. “You could’ve said that to begin with,” he said, turning on his heel and heading back to the ingredients closet.
Draco rolled his eyes and took out his brewing gloves and carefully began preparing the ingredients on the tray, placing each onto its own square of parchment. Potter returned, and Draco held out his hand for the small piece of bone, which Potter dropped into his palm with a sour look. It was white, clean and perfect.
“Powder the aconite in the mortar and pestle,” Draco said, picking up a fine rasp and a piece of parchment.
“You can’t just-!”
Draco paused and looked over at Potter who was bristling once again.
“You’re ordering me around; you haven’t even looked at the instructions!” Potter retorted.
Draco’s hands clenched, the metal of the rasp digging into his palm. The desire to snap back at Potter was nearly overpowering. He bit the inside of his cheek and said with forced nonchalance, “My apologies. I’ve simply brewed this potion a great deal and have it memorised. I will, of course, check the instructions before we begin brewing. If you would prefer to take the lead-?”
Potter stared at him, “What?” He sat down, looking put out and mildly disappointed for some reason. He let out a huge sigh and asked, “You brewed it enough to memorise it?”
Draco turned back to his task, “I brewed a lot of potions over the summer, but I focused on those that were the most needed.”
“You made potions… for people?” Potter seemed sceptical.
“Yes, Potter,” Draco said.
“So you sold them? I didn’t think the reparations were that bad,” Potter said.
Draco finished turning the bone into a fine powder and put it back on the tray, picking up the aconite leaves and mortar. “They weren’t.” He spoke slowly for the hard of thinking, “I gave them away.”
Potter blinked at him, “I haven’t heard about that.”
“Because no one knows,” Draco rolled his eyes, “I did it anonymously.”
“You?” Potter’s brow furrowed, “There’s no way you would do that.”
“Because I’m a horrible person,” Draco said flatly.
“No! It’s just you always- whenever there’s a chance of getting attention you always- did.” Potter said.
Draco allowed himself a small bitter smile, “True. In this instance though, I had to be anonymous.”
“Why?”
“Imagine if you will, what would happen to any potion with my name attached to it?” Draco said.
Potter frowned, “It would be thrown away.”
“Seemed a waste to me,” Draco said.
Potter was silent.

Harry: Malfoy…
Draco: No, don’t even think about it.
Harry: We’ve been here for hours!
Draco: So I’m sure you can wait a couple more.
Harry: It doesn’t have to mean anything. Just a quick peck and –
Draco: I don’t want a quick peck.
Harry: Alright, I’ll use tongue then.
Draco: Potter! Don’t be crass.
Harry: I’m tired. And I’m hungry. And my legs hurt. So I’ll be as crass as I want, thank you very much.
Draco: So uncivilized.
Harry: At least I’m not such a proud snob that I can’t even lower myself to kiss someone just for a second.
Draco: The mistletoe can only hold us in place for seven hours so we’re already halfway there. Stop being so impatient.
Harry: Come on, Malfoy. I want to go to bed. Just let me kiss you.
Draco: No.
Harry: Why are you being so difficult about this? It’s just a kiss.
Draco: It’s not just a kiss, Potter. It’s never just a kiss.
Harry: What does that mean?
Draco: It means I am not kissing you.
Harry: Come on, it could be fun.
Draco: What did you just say?
Harry: I’ve been told I have a wicked tongue.
Draco: Potter! Stop. I can’t unhear that. What is wrong with you?
Harry: You’re really going to make us stand here for another three hours?
Draco: The mistletoe is making us stand here, Potter.
Harry: You’re infuriating.
Harry: Free at last! No thanks to you, Mal -
Draco: Do you still want to kiss me?
Harry: Excuse me?
Draco: I’m asking if you would be amenable to us kissing now, Potter?
Harry: You want to kiss me?
Draco: Yes. If –
Harry: So we’ve been standing here all night and now you’re telling me you want to kiss me?
Draco: Yes.
Harry: Are you having me on?
Draco: You haven’t answered my question. Are you amenable – “
Harry: Why didn’t you let me kiss you before?
Draco: I don’t want you to kiss me because you have to. I want you to kiss me because you want to.
Harry: You bloody bastard! Why didn’t you say this earlier? We could have solved this in two seconds if you just told me this. WE’VE BEEN STANDING HERE FOR SEVEN HOURS.
Draco: There’s no need to shout. If you’re not amenable to –
Harry: I AM AMENABLE. THAT’S WHAT I’M TELLING YOU. You made us wait seven hours for nothing. I’ve wanted to kiss you long before we got stuck under this stupid mistletoe.
Draco: Oh.
Harry: Seven hours. I can’t believe you.
Draco: Does this mean I can kiss you now?
Harry: No. Come find me in another seven hours and –
Draco: Potter!
Harry: Fine. But only because I can’t bear to wait any longer. Seven hours. You absolute twat.

At 18, everyone receive a superpower. Your childhood friend got a power-absorption, your best friends got time control, and they quickly rise into top 100 most powerful superheroes. You got a mediocre superpower, but somehow got into the top 10. Today they visit you asking how you did it.
“Power absorption?” you ask him over your pasta, which you are currently absorbing powerfully. in the background, a tv is reading out what the Phoenix extremeist group has done recently. bodies, stacking.
tim nods, pushing his salad around. “it’s kind of annoying.” he’s gone vegan ever since he could talk to animals. his cheeks are sallow. “yesterday i absorbed static and i can’t stop shocking myself.”
“you don’t know what from,” shay is detangling her hair at the table, even though it’s not polite. about a second ago, her hair was perfect, which implies she’s been somewhere in the inbetween. “try millions of multiverses that your powers conflict with.”
“did we die in the last one?” you grin and she grins and tim grins but nobody answers the question.
now she has a cut over her left eye and her hair is shorter. she looks tired and tim looks tired and you look down at your 18-year-old hands, which are nothing.
they ship out tomorrow. they go out to the frontlines or wherever it is that superheroes go to fight supervillains; the cream of the crop. the starlight banner kids.
“you both are trying too hard,” you tell them, “couldn’t you have been, like, really good at surfing?”
“god,” shay groans, “what i’d give to only be in the olympics.”
xxx in the night, tim is asleep. on the way home, he absorbed telekinesis, and hates it too.
shay looks at you. “i’m scared,” she says.
you must not have died recently, because she looks the same she did at dinner, cut healing slowly over her eye the way it’s supposed to, not the hyper-quickness of a timejump. just shay, living in the moment when the moment is something everyone lives in. her eyes are wide and dark the way brown eyes can be, that swelling fullness that feels so familiar and warm, that piercing darkness that feels like a stone at the back of your tongue.
“you should be,” you say.
her nose wrinkles, she opens her mouth, but you plow on.
“they’re going to take one look at you and be like, ‘gross, shay? no thanks. you’re too pretty. it’s bringing down like, morale, and things’. then they’ll kick you out and i’ll live with you in a box and we’ll sell stolen cans of ravioli.”
she’s grinning. “like chef boyardee or like store brand?”
“store brand but we print out chef boyardee labels and tape them over the can so we can mark up the price.”
“where do we get the tape?”
“we, uh,” you look into those endless dark eyes, so much like the night, so much like a good hot chocolate, so much like every sleepover you’ve had with the two of your best friends, and you say, “it’s actually just your hair. i tie your hair around the cans to keep the label on.”
she throws a pillow at you.
you both spend a night planning what you’ll do in the morning when shay is kicked out of Squadron 8, Division 1; top rankers that are all young. you’ll both run away to the beach and tim will be your intel and you’ll burn down the whole thing. you’re both going to open a bakery where you will do the baking and she’ll use her time abilities to just, like, speed things up so you don’t have to wake up at dawn. you’re both going to become wedding planners that only do really extreme weddings.
she falls asleep on your shoulder. you do not sleep at all.
in the morning, they are gone.
xxx
squadron 434678, Division 23467 is basically “civilian status.” you still have to know what to expect and all that stuff. you’re glad that you’re taking extra classes at college; you’re kind of bored re-learning the stuff you were already taught in high school. there are a lot of people who need help, and you’re good at that, so you help them.
tim and shay check in from time to time, but they’re busy saving the world, so you don’t fault them for it. in the meantime, you put your head down and work, and when your work is done, you help the people who can’t finish their work. and it kind of feels good. kind of.
xxx
at twenty, squadron 340067, division 2346 feels like a good fit. tim and you go out for ice cream in a new place that rebuilt after the Phoenix group burned it down. you’ve chosen nurse-practitioner as your civilian job, because it seems to fit, but you’re not released for full status as civilian until you’re thirty, so it’s been a lot of office work.
tim’s been on the fritz a lot lately, overloading. you’re worried they’ll try to force him out on the field. he’s so young to be like this.
“i feel,” he says, “like it all comes down to this puzzle. like i’m never my own. i steal from other people’s boxes.”
you wrap your hand around his. “sometimes,” you say, “we love a river because it is a reflection.”
he’s quiet a long time after that. a spurt of flame licks from under his eyes.
“i wish,” he says, “i could believe that.”
xxx
twenty three has you in squad 4637, division 18. really you’ve just gotten here because you’re good at making connections. you know someone who knows someone who knows you as a good kid. you helped a woman onto a bus and she told her neighbor who told his friend. you’re mostly in the filing department, but you like watching the real superheroes come in, get to know some of them. at this level, people have good powers but not dangerous ones. you learn how to help an 18 year old who is a loaded weapon by shifting him into a non-violent front. you get those with pstd home where they belong. you put your head down and work, which is what you’re good at.
long nights and long days and no vacations is fine until everyone is out of the office for candlenights eve. you’re the only one who didn’t mind staying, just in case someone showed up needing something.
the door blows open. when you look up, he’s bleeding. you jump to your feet.
“oh,” you say, because you recognize the burning bird insignia on his chest, “I think you have the wrong office.”
“i just need,” he spits onto the ground, sways, collapses.
well, okay. so, that’s, not, like. great. “uh,” you say, and you miss shay desperately, “okay.”
you find the source of the bleeding, stabilize him for when the shock sets in, get him set up on a desk, sew him shut. two hours later, you’ve gotten him a candlenights present and stabilized his vitals. you’ve also filed him into a separate folder (it’s good to be organized) and found him a home, far from the warfront.
when he wakes up, you give him hot chocolate (god, how you miss shay), and he doesn’t smile. he doesn’t smile at the gift you’ve gotten him (a better bulletproof vest, one without the Phoenix on it), or the stitches. that’s okay. you tell him to take the right medications, hand them over to him, suggest a doctor’s input. and then you hand over his folder with a new identity in it and a new house and civilian status. you take a deep breath.
he opens it and bursts into tears. he doesn’t say anything. he just leaves and you have to clean up the blood, which isn’t very nice of him. but it’s candlenights. so whatever. hopefully he’ll learn to like his gift.
xxx
squadron 3046, division 2356 is incredibly high for a person like you to fit. but still, you fit, because you’re good at organization and at hard work, and at knowing how to hold on when other people don’t see a handhold.
shay is home. you’re still close, the two of you, even though she feels like she exists on another planet. the more security you’re privy to, the more she can tell you.
you brush her hair as she speaks about the endless man who never dies, and how they had to split him up and hide him throughout the planet. she cries when she talks about how much pain he must be in.
“can you imagine?” she whispers, “i mean, i know he’s phoenix, but can you imagine?”
“one time i had to work retail on black friday,” you say.
she sniffles.
“one time my boss put his butt directly on my hand by accident and i couldn’t say anything so i spent a whole meeting with my hand directly up his ass,” you say.
her eyes are so brown, and filling, and there are scars on her you’ve never noticed that might be new or very, very, very old; and neither of you know exactly how much time she’s actually been alive for.
“i mean,” you say, “yeah that might hurt but one time i said goodbye to someone but they were walking in the same direction. i mean can you imagine.”
she laughs, finally, even though it’s weakly, and says, “one time even though i can manipulate time i slept in and forgot to go to work even though i was leading a presentation and i had to look them in the face later to tell them that.”
“you’re a compete animal,” you tell her, and look into those eyes, so sad and full of timelines you’ll never witness, “you should be kicked out completely.”
she wipes her face. “find me in a box,” she croaks, “selling discount ravioli.”

you don’t know how it happens. but you guess the word gets around. you don’t think you like being known to them as someone they can go to, but it’s not like they’ve got a lot of options. many of them just want to be out of it, so you get them out, you guess.
you explain to them multiple times you haven’t done a residency yet and you really only know what an emt would, but they still swing by. every time they show up at your office, you feel your heart in your chest: this is it, this is how you die, this is how it ends.
“so, like, this group” you say, trying to work the system’s loopholes to find her a way out of it, “from ashes come all things, or whatever?”
she shrugs. you can tell by looking at her that she’s dangerous. “it’s corny,” she says. another shrug. “i didn’t mean to wind up a criminal.”
you don’t tell her that you sort of don’t know how one accidentally becomes a criminal, since you kind-of-sort-of help criminals out, accidentally.
“i don’t believe any of that stuff,” she tells you, “none of that whole… burn it down to start it over.” she swallows. “stuff just happens. and happens. and you wake up and it’s still happening, even though you wish it wasn’t.”
you think about shay, and how she’s covered in scars, and her crying late at night because of things nobody else ever saw.
“yeah,” you say, and print out a form, “i get that.”
and you find a dangerous woman a normal home.
xxx
“you’re squadron 905?”
“division 34754,” you tell him. watch him look down at your ID and certification and read your superpower on the card and then look back up to you and then back down to the card and then back up at you, and so on. he licks his chapped lips and stands in the cold.
this happens a lot. but you smile. the gatekeeper is frowning, but then hanson walks by. “oh shit,” he says, “it’s you! come right on in!” he gives you a hug through your rolled-down window.
the gatekeeper is in a stiff salute now. gulping in terror. hanson is one of the strongest people in this sector, and he just hugged you.
the gate opens. hanson swaggers through. you shrug to the gatekeeper. “i helped him out one time.”
inside they’re debriefing. someone has shifted sides, someone powerful, someone wild. it’s not something you’re allowed to know about, but you know it’s bad. so you put your head down, and you work, because that’s what you’re good at, after all. you find out the gatekeeper’s name and send him a thank-you card and also handmade chapstick and some good earmuffs.
shay messages you that night. i have to go somewhere, she says, i can’t explain it, but there’s a mission and i might be gone a long time.
you stare at the screen for a long time. your fingers type out three words. you erase them. you instead write where could possibly better than stealing chef boyardee with me?
she doesn’t read it. you close the tab.
and you put your head down. and work.

it’s in a chili’s. like, you don’t even like chili’s? chili’s sucks, but the boss ordered it so you’re here to pick it up, wondering if he gave you enough money to cover. things have been bad recently. thousands dying. whoever switched sides is too powerful to stop. they destroy anyone and anything, no matter the cost.
the phoenix fire smells like pistachios, you realize. you feel at once part of yourself and very far. it happens so quickly, but you feel it slowly. you wonder if shay is involved, but know she is not.
the doors burst in. there’s screaming. those in the area try their powers to defend themselves, but everyone is civilian division. the smell of pistachios is cloying.
then they see you. and you see them. and you put your hands on your hips.
“excuse me, tris,” you say, “what are you doing?”
there’s tears in her eyes. “i need the money,” she croaks.
“From a chili’s?” you want to know, “who in their right mind robs a chili’s? what are you going to do, steal their mozzarella sticks?”
“it’s connected to a bank on the east wall,” she explains, “but i thought it was stupid too.”
you shake your head. you pull out your personal checkbook. you ask her how much she needs, and you see her crying. you promise her the rest when you get your paycheck.
someone bursts into the room. shouts things. demands they start killing.
but you’re standing in the way, and none of them will kill you or hurt you, because they all know you, and you helped them at some point or another, or helped their friend, or helped their children.
tris takes the money, everyone leaves. by the time the heroes show up, you’ve gotten everyone out of the building.
the next time you see tris, she’s marrying a beautiful woman, and living happily, having sent her cancer running. you’re a bridesmaid at the wedding.

“you just,” the director wants to know now, “sent them running?”
hanson stands between her and you, although you don’t need the protection.
“no,” you say again, for the millionth time, “i just gave her the money she needed and told her to stop it.”
“the phoenix group,” the director of squadron 300 has a vein showing, “does not just stop it.”
you don’t mention the social issues which confound to make criminal activity a necessity for some people, or how certain stereotypes forced people into negative roles to begin with, or how an uneven balance of power punished those with any neurodivergence. instead you say, “yeah, they do.”
“i’m telling you,” hanson says, “we brought her out a few times. it happens every time. they won’t hurt her. we need her on our team.”
your spine is stiff. “i don’t do well as a weapon,” you say, voice low, knowing these two people could obliterate you if they wished. but you won’t use people’s trust against them, not for anything. besides, it’s not like trust is your superpower. you’re just a normal person.
hanson snorts. “no,” he says, “but i like that when you show up, the fighting just… stops. that’s pretty nice, kid.”
“do you know… what we are dealing with…. since agent 25… shifted….?” the director’s voice is thin.
“yeah,” hanson says, “that’s why i think she’d be useful, you know? add some peace to things.”
the director sits down. sighs. waves her hand. “whatever,” she croaks, “do what you want. reassign her.”
hanson leads you out. over your shoulder, you see her put her head in her hands. later, you get her a homemade spa kit, and make sure to help her out by making her a real dinner from time to time, something she’s too busy for, mostly.
at night, you write shay messages you don’t send. telling her things you cannot manage.
one morning you wake up to a terrible message: shay is gone. never to be seen again.
xxx
you’re eating ice cream when you find him.
behind you, the city is burning. hundreds dead, if not thousands.
he’s staring at the river. maybe half-crying. it’s hard to tell, his body is shifting, seemingly caught between all things and being nothing.
“ooh buddy,” you say, passing him a cone-in-a-cup, the way he likes it, “talk about a night on the town.”
the bench is burning beside him, so you put your jacket down and snuff it out. it’s hard sitting next to him. he emits so much.
“hey tim?” you say.
“yeah?” his voice is a million voices, a million powers, a terrible curse.
“can i help?” you ask.
he eats a spoonful of ice cream.
“yeah,” he says eventually. “i think i give up.”
xxx
later, when they praise you for defeating him, you won’t smile. they try to put you in the media; an all-time hero. you decline every interview and press conference. you attend his funeral with a veil over your head.
the box goes into the ground. you can’t stop crying.
you’re the only one left at the site. it’s dark now, the subtle night.
you feel her at your side and something in your heart stops hurting. a healing you didn’t know you needed. her hands find yours.
“they wanted me to kill him,” she says, “they thought i’d be the only one who could.” her hands are warm. you aren’t breathing.
“beat you to it,” you say.
“i see that,” she tells you.
you both stand there. crickets nestle the silence.
“you know,” she says eventually, “i have no idea which side is the good one.”
“i think that’s the point of a good metaphor about power and control,” you say, “it reflects the human spirit. no tool or talent is good or bad.”
“just useful,” she whispers. after a long time, she wonders, “so what does that make us?”
xxx
it’s a long trek up into the mountains. shay seems better every day. more solid. less like she’s on another plane.
“heard you’re a top ten,” she tells me, her breath coming out in a fog. you’ve reclassed her to civilian. it took calling in a few favors, but you’ve got a lot.
“yeah,” you say, “invulnerable.”
“oh, is that your superpower?” she laughs. she knows it’s not.
“that’s what they’re calling it,” you tell her, out of breath the way she is not, “it’s how they explain a person like me at the top.”
“if that means ‘nobody wants to kill me’, i think i’m the opposite.” but she’s laughing, in a light way, a way that’s been missing from her.
the cabin is around the corner. the lights are already on.
“somebody’s home,” i grin.
tim, just tim, tim who isn’t forced into war and a million reflections, opens the door. “come on in.” xxx squadron one, division three. a picture of shay in a wedding dress is on my desk. she looks radiant, even though she’s marrying little old me.
what do i do? just what i’m best at. what’s not a superpower. what anyone is capable of: just plain old helping.

Midnight Kiss
Happy New Year! Let’s make 2018 our year, and stay positive!
I wrote this little New Year’s drabble, and I hope you all enjoy it! xx
Everyone was gathered up in the eight-year common room. Seamus had had the brilliant idea to organize a New Year’s party at Hogwarts, considering it was their last year and everyone needed the cheer up. There were only three rules:
1. No one was allowed to talk about the War and the ones that had been lost to it.
2. Everyone needed to wear a ridiculously nice outfit.
3. More importantly, everyone needed to have fun.
He had talked to the Headmistress, that had reluctantly agreed to let them have alcoholic drinks at the party, and had also allowed them to have fireworks outside of the castle, as long as Seamus remained away from them.
Harry was wearing a muggle black suit, with a white shirt and a green tie, that complemented his eyes. Ron was wearing burgundy dress robes, meticulously picked by his girlfriend, who was wearing a long purple gown that had made several heads turn when she walked into the common room.
Draco was wearing silk deep green dress robes, his favourite colour. As soon as he had walked into the common room, he embarrassingly realised that his robes matched Harry’s tie (yes, he was Harry now), before taking in Harry’s appearance. His breath hitched as he scanned his eyes over his figure, his cheeks reddening by the second. Harry was attractive as it was, but that night, he was simply mesmerising. Draco had only recently discovered that he had feelings for Harry, and he was scared out of his mind. They had become friends at the beginning of the year, and had fallen into a comfortable routine of late night talks, study sessions and Quidditch matches. Now, Draco’s mind was filled with fantasies of the two of them kissing and touching… But Draco knew that was all they would ever be, fantasies. There was absolutely no way that he would confess his feelings and risk one of the best things that had happened to him in a very long time. He would have to man up and get over it.
Harry couldn’t keep his eyes away from Draco (Malfoy was long gone).
“He looks stupidly gorgeous in those dress robes.” Harry thought, as his mouth went dry at the sight before him.
He had developed a bit of a crush for the Slytherin. A big crush, really. Draco was constantly on his mind, day and night, and no matter how much he wanted it to stop, it wouldn’t. After a long conversation with Hermione, and Ron’s near stroke, he had decided to keep quiet about it. He cherished his friendship with Draco, and he didn’t want to jeopardise it by a stupid crush that would eventually go away.
“I really hope it goes away, because I don’t think I can live like this much longer.”
His thoughts were interrupted by Dean’s cheerful tone. “How about we play Spin the Bottle?!”
Most eyes widened.
“Hmm, Spin the Bottle? Mate, I don’t think…” Ron said, scratching the back of his neck as a display of the awkwardness that was bound to happen if they played that game.
“Oh, c’mon, we’re all adults here. Are you really trying to tell me you can’t handle a few pecks?” Dean stated, matter-of-factly.
Most people still looked uncertain, but eventually they all agreed to it. Dean grabbed an empty bottle of Ogden’s Old Firewhisky, and set it on the floor, as he sat down. Everyone else soon followed.
“I’ll start.” He spun the bottle, that after what felt like an eternity, finally landed on Seamus. Dean playfully smirked at his best friend, before grabbing his robes and crashing his mouth into his. It was everything but gentle. They both clung to each other’s clothes, as if they were afraid of letting go, as their tongues swirled around one another, emanating a heat that was palpable to everyone in the room. After a few minutes, they parted, panting. Everyone had their mouths opened, in absolute shock at what had just happened. Seamus was slightly trembling, with completely flushed cheeks and a stunned expression on his face.
“By the way guys, Seamus and I are actually dating.” Dean stated, nonchalantly, as if he were speaking of the weather.
An intense applause then erupted, as everyone got up to congratulate them, shaking their hands and patting them on the back.
“Congratulations mate!” Harry exclaimed, as he hugged Seamus.
“Thanks Harry.” Seamus said, recovered from the initial shock as he smiled lovingly at his boyfriend, who simply winked at him before sitting back down.
The excitement soon quieted down and they returned to the game. Ron got to kiss Hermione, Ginny snogged the hell out of Luna, Neville got to peck Hannah Abbott, Pansy Parkinson practically devoured Blaise Zabini, and so on.
Draco had started to notice that there was a clear pattern on the game. All the pairs that had kissed so far liked each other. Romantically. A rush of realisation coursed through him, as he started to panic. His train of thought was abruptly interrupted by Theo Nott’s voice. “Draco, are you listening?”
“Wh- what?”
“It’s your turn.”
Draco gasped. If his suspicions were correct, and he was 99% sure that they were, the bottle would land on Harry sodding Potter. And he didn’t know if he was ready for that.
“Draco, are you ok?” Theo’s tone expressed evident concern.
“I’m f-f-fine.”
“If you say so… Spin the bottle then, we don’t have all day!”
Draco’s hand was shaking, as he reached for the bottle and made it spin. He hoped with every fibre in his body that his suspicions were wrong, and that the bottle would land on someone else.
Much to his dismay, or not, the bottle landed on The Boy Who Lived. Draco’s heart skipped a beat. “What if everyone else knows what’s happening? What if he knows? Oh sweet Merlin, this can’t be happening!” he thought, as he searched for Harry’s face.
His eyes soon found what he was looking for. Harry was looking at him, a small frown on his face. Draco was excruciatingly nervous, but tried to fake calmness by giving him a weak smile. Harry just smiled back, before getting up and approaching him.
“I-, You-“ Draco was a bumbling mess.
Harry was just as nervous, but tried to maintain his composure. He looked into Draco’s eyes before asking: “Are you ok with this?” Draco gave him a small nod and Harry took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and leaned in, lightly brushing his lips against Draco’s, before closing the tiny gap between them. It was a sweet and gentle kiss. Harry barely moved his lips, afraid of messing up the friendship that he had built with the Slytherin.
Draco was in a state of haze. He was kissing Harry, something he had only dreamt about. His lips were soft and smooth against his own, moving in the gentlest of motions. He felt all giddy and warm inside.
The kiss lasted for only a minute. They soon parted ways, both with a dumb smile on their faces, as if they had never been happier in their lives. They were so caught up in what had happened that didn’t even acknowledge Dean’s mischievous grin.
The game continued for a few more minutes before Seamus announced that midnight was coming up. They all rushed out of the common room to get to the school grounds and appreciate the fireworks that would start as soon as the clock struck midnight.
“Mate, you look like a complete loon! Is this about your kiss with Malfoy?” Ron asked, as he looked at his best friend’s hazy expression.
Harry didn’t even hear his best friend, too focused on what had just happened.
“Mate!”
“What, Ron?”
“You have it bad for him, don’t you?”
Harry just smiled wider, acknowledging the fact that he did indeed have it bad for Draco. Hermione, who had been watching the whole thing, just smiled at him, before hooking her arm with her boyfriend’s arm and striding away towards the mass of people that had gathered ahead, waiting for the fireworks to start.
Harry then felt a hand on his shoulder, turning around to see Draco standing there, smiling brightly at him.
“Hey.”
“Hey.”
“So, that back there was…” Harry started.
“Amazing.” Draco said.
“Really?” Harry asked, wanting to make sure he was getting things right.
“Yes! I can’t tell you how much I have been wanting to do that… Ever since we became friends, I started to feel… something. And I had no idea what it was, until I had a long talk with Pansy and realised that I… Uh… Kinda fell for you…” Draco was looking at the floor, blushing like mad.
Harry gently grabbed Draco’s chin, making him look into his eyes.
“I’ve felt the same way, Draco. Since the beginning of the year, really. I didn’t know how to tell you because I was afraid of messing up our friendship.”
“I was scared too! That’s why I didn’t say anything. But after tonight, I guess things have changed?” Draco asked, with a tentative smile.
“I guess they have.” Harry smiled back.
“I’ve heard about this stupid muggle tradition that involves kissing someone at midnight…” Draco raised his eyebrow.
“Have you?” Harry smirked.
“10! 9! 8!…” The countdown had begun.
Harry smiled at Draco before placing his hands on his neck, pulling him towards him and placing his lips on his. This time, there was nothing holding them back. They poured all of their emotions into the kiss, as their tongues danced around each other. It was sweet and rushed at the same time. They parted as they heard the fireworks in the sky. They admired the bright colours that filled the night sky before looking into each other’s eyes, smiling and leaning in again.
Ron had his arm around his girlfriend’s waist, and she had her head on his shoulder as they looked into the sky. Dean and Seamus were just by their side. Hermione then got reminded of something and pulled Dean aside, earning a shrug from their boyfriends.
“Dean, you did something to that bottle, didn’t you?”
Dean smirked. “Yes, I charmed it so it would only land on the person that whoever spun the bottle liked.”
“I figured. And I think Draco figured it out too. He was rather nervous when it was his turn to spin the bottle.”
“I know.” Dean laughed, then pointed towards Harry and Draco, who were too busy with each other to notice anyone else. “It was about time, don’t you think?”
Hermione gave him a knowing grin. “Definitely.”
between draco and harry, who really got baited? <3

reblog with your hogwarts house and if you like coffee or tea
Ravenclaw and a nice Earl Grey tea
When you die, you appear in a cinema with a number of other people who look like you. You find out that they are your previous reincarnations, and soon you all begin watching your next life on the big screen.
If I shared anything with my reincarnations, it was in our belief in fate. Though each previous version of me held a very different perspective of it. The me that had died in the Great Depression thought it a terrible thing, wicked and omnipotent. The me that had lived as king in the middle ages thought it a gift presented by God. Me, I believed it a promise.
My next reincarnation was a baby with deep blue eyes and pink skin named George. He started his life alone. George cried so much that they had to put him in a separate room, devoid of the other infants. A nurse checked in on him every few hours. Nobody blamed her. She had more pressing matters to attend to, such as George’s mother, whose heart rate was steadily growing out of control and her breathing stuttered.
When the young lady died, she did so whispering her son’s name. I wasn’t sure if she ever even got a look at him. In that hospital room, with the flat-line beep of a heart rate monitor, the nurse checking on George stood, lips quivering and fists clenched.
In this world, children were supposed to be loved by their parents. If not the mother, who else would? For George, it was nobody, not even himself.
The orphanage boasted posters of smiling blonde-haired boys and girls with deep blue eyes. George could’ve been a literal poster boy if he ever smiled. But no matter how many stuffed animals they threw his way, how many hugs and smiles they offered him, they could never get those lip-locked edges to curve up.
By the time he had hit thirteen, he had already smoked his first cigarette and drank his first beer. Nobody wanted to tell him, but everybody knew. Nobody adopted teenagers. He would be a lifer, an unwanted child turned into an unwanted adult.
And on his seventeenth birthday, he bought a gun.
None of us watching were worried at all for other people. Despite everything that happened, George was a gentle boy and that was his problem. Nobody could reach him through his overpowering politeness. It took a mother’s love to chip away at the boy and all he had was an old photo of a ghost who once loved him.
He snuck out when the moon had hit its apex, left all the money he had in a small package with a letter. It read: Thanks for taking care of me. And that was it. He didn’t sign it, didn’t address it to anyone, he wrote it all in a cheap pen and stuffed it inside with twelve-hundred dollars cash.
The spot he chose was out of the way. Nobody was nearby to be disturbed. No runners would come this way to be scared. The only selfishness he allowed himself was that it was by a river, a black canvas of glittering moonlight.
“I was never meant to live,” he told himself and us. “This is fate.”
Some of us nodded with him. Others shook their heads. I stared, my neck stiff, eyes unblinking as he put the gun to his temple.
“No,” I whispered. “Don’t do it.”
Some of us, the more boisterous ones, cheered along, egging the boy to pull the trigger. They had seen a thousand lives and would see a thousand more until all of mankind vanished. A single life in a single point of time meant nothing to them. But for me, this was my first.
“No,” I said and stood from my seat. “Please.”
The screen flickered to the tremble of his finger. Soon, it would go completely black. He would fulfill his fate.
“No!” I screamed. “This isn’t how it should go!”
The boisterous ones were no longer laughing. The others around me turned away their eyes. At one point in time, they had all been me. They had thought that life mattered, that our pain had meaning. But after a thousand shows of a thousand lives, most of them only slept through the show.
I clenched my fists, the words swelling in my lungs. Then, I took the breath to give them life and I prayed, that somehow, I wasn’t just a dead man with a loud mouth.
“Don’t pull,” I yelled, tears pouring down my cheeks and snot from my nose. “Not until you have a chance. Maybe you never will, maybe this will be how it always is, maybe I’m wrong about everything, but there’s meaning in your pain! I can’t tell you if I’m right or if I’m certain.” My voice dropped low. “I can only promise.”
George closed his eyes. He hadn’t heard me, of course he wouldn’t.
I held my breath.
Then, George broke down, the gun still pressed to his head. “So cruel,” he whispered to nobody. “After all this, all I have is a promise. That’s all my fate has to offer.”
My eyes went wide. My jaw dropped. “And that’s enough,” I said, my voice too low even for myself to hear.
There, George stood, the gun rigid in his hand. And when his tears fell, so too did his gun.
