Hey Everyone, It’s Shelly! I have a few things to get of my chest and I felt like this could be a good place to do so.

As many of you know or you may not, I made a petition last month calling for The Sims™ Team to fix the issue with the darker skin-tones in the game. I am making this post just to share my overall frustration with the franchise and as a creator as a whole. 

The Sims 4™ has been out since 2014. In that time we have had many patches and updates to the base game and yet after 6 (going on 7) years we still have YET to fix the skin-tone issue that we have had from the start. It is so hard to find accurate representation in this game. Sad to say this doesn’t just happen in The Sims™. The gaming community as a whole puts black and brown characters on the back burner and when it comes to character creation they will have a plethora of options for paler characters but then they will throw in one token black hair and call it a day. If these gaming companies truly care about inclusivity then they should be taking the steps to SHOW it. It really upsets me that The Sims™, in particular prides itself of creativity and diversity but have yet to live up to their beliefs fully. 

This next part isn’t a callout or me “coming” for anyone, but I have to make this example to show you all what I mean. 

Xmiramira is a prominent figure in the gaming community, she is a wonderful black gamer who has been playing sims for years. Mira called The Sims™ out for their lack of skin-tones several years ago and even went out of her way to make more skin-tones and colors for us black and brown players called the Melanin Pack. She did this in 2016 and here we are in 2020 and the base game colors have still not improved. Recently another YouTuber (who is great in her own right) made the request to have the ability to nickname cowplants. This feature wasn’t necessarily needed but yet in the latest patch to the game we now have the ability to do so. The only reason I am mentioning this is to point out how the The Sims™ Team doesn’t prioritize the things that players are asking for. It’s just really sad to see that a game that so many of us love not have the representation that we need. 

As a black creators we have to work twice as hard to get half as far. Even me as a black custom content creator, I don’t get as much recognition as my peers and to be honest, the black and p.o.c creators are some of the best in this community. This isn’t saying that our white peers aren’t great, but all I am saying is that you can see that there is a clear divide.

I hope that one day we can see a change. We shouldn’t have to rely on CC and Petitions to get the game that we deserve. If you all are looking for more skin-tones I made a list in one of my previous post. Here is a LINK for those interested.

Please protect our trans people! Especially our BLACK trans people! Black transgender people have an extremely high unemployment rate at 26 percent, two times the rate of the overall transgender sample and four times the rate of the general population. A startling 41 percent of Black respondents said they had experienced homelessness at some point in their lives, more than five times the rate of the general U.S. population. Black transgender people lived in extreme poverty with 34 percent reporting a household income of less than $10,000 per year. This is more than twice the rate for transgender people of all races (15 percent), four times the general Black population rate (9 percent), and eight times the general U.S. population rate (4 percent). Black transgender people were affected by HIV in devastating numbers. More than one-fifth of respondents were living with HIV (20.23 percent), compared to a rate of 2.64 percent for transgender respondents of all races, 2.4 percent for the general Black population, and 0.60 percent of the general U.S. population.

From education to employment and housing discrimination, from police brutality to health care disparities, Black transgender people are suffering at extremely high rates due to bigotry and transphobia. Nearly half of all Black transgender respondents report being harassed at work and at school. Twenty-six percent are unemployed and 34 percent report annual incomes of less than $10,000 per year. These numbers are appalling and these living conditions are unacceptable for any human being — gender conforming or not.  

The black community particularly has a tendency to turn a blind eye to the hate that trans people get. We as a community are being discriminated against daily, and yet we can be the main ones who discriminate our OWN people sometimes. If Black lives matter, then ALL BLACK LIVES should matter. Yes, that includes all the QUEER and non-conforming lives as well.

I learnt something interesting today and I thought i’d pass it on because it was causing a quite annoying issue in my game. 

Quick Summary:  Make sure your shadow map alpha layer is not all white

Long explanation: 

So I was getting quite annoyed because for some reason, random cc hairs were causing bad texture crunch on some cc underwear I was making, picture example below:

(I turned up the contrast so it’s easier to see but it’s quite obvious in CAS)

So, after doing some digging I figured out that it was the shadow map of the hair causing the issue. 

Shadow maps work by reading two layers, the texture and the alpha. I’m not an expert but just to quickly explain, even if the the texture is white (meaning no shadow) you still need to make the alpha black so the game *knows* there is nothing there. For example: 

The texture is white, but if the alpha is white as well the game still places a layer of ‘nothing’ over the entire body which for some reason causes the crunchy textures on the rest of the sim, so to stop this you just need to make sure you have the alpha only be white in the area that your actually using for the shadow map, like above. 

I very much like the paintable garage doors that came with city life. I needed an open version for Pippa’s new workshop so I made one. Its an arch so it doesn’t close and it certainly isn’t paintable but it is base game. i hope you like it as much as I do.

EA doesn’t need more money, at the end of the day it’s a drop in the ocean to them. Corporate profits are way less important to me than people having fun.

Rest assured, I will go out of my way to make all my CC base game compatible (even if that occasionally means larger file sizes)! Unless there is a scripted gameplay aspect that requires a pack, it will be BGC.
