Performed laparoscopically to reduce downtime and recovery, Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass is performed to assist morbidly obese patients in losing weight.  Differing fromAdjustable Gastric Banding (Lap-Band/Realize), Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgerydoes not require the placement of a Gastric Band.  A small pouch is created from the upper stomach and completely detached from the lower portion of the stomach and reconnected to the small intestine.  The small pouch, about the size of an egg, completely bypasses the lower portion of the stomach.  This allows for appetite and portion size to be controlled. Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass is a restrictive as well as a malabsorbtive procedure with weight loss at about two thirds of your excessive body weight.

How is Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Performed?

Using small incisions, Dr. Mutafyan surgically separates a small portion of the stomach and reattaches it to the small intestine.  The lower portion of the stomach is completely bypassed.  The smaller pouch that is created typically holds 25ml, and assists patients in controlling the amount of food that can be eaten at one time, and gives patients an overall feeling of fullness much more quickly. Unlike Adjustable Gastric Banding (Lap-Band/Realize), adjustments do not need to be made following the surgery.  Long-term weight loss is achieved through the restricted stomach compartment and through the decreased absorption that results from Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass.

The total procedure is generally done on an inpatient basis.  Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass usually takes two and a half to three hours, and patients can generally stay at the hospital two days and return home after the procedure is complete.

Are You a Good Candidate for Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass?

The National Institute of Health requires that a body mass index (BMI) be greater than 40.  For men, this means being an average of 100 pounds overweight, and for women, this means being an average of 80 pounds overweight.  In some cases, exceptions can be made for patients who have a BMI between 35 and 40.  In these cases, patients can be approved for Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass if they also have an obesity-related health condition.  If you are unsure what your body mass index is, use our BMI Calculator to determine if you BMI meets the requirements.

Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery Results

The recovery from Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery will vary from patient to patient. Most patients will enjoy long-term weight loss by limiting the amount of food that can be eaten, and by stimulating the sensation of fullness (satiety).
