BRING YOUR BOOMERS is back!
You are invited to our next edition of BRING YOUR BOOMERS - a culturally-driven intergenerational dialogue about social and political issues. After an exciting year filled with the Fractured Landrelease and successful projects like Creative Publics, Gen Why Media is bringing back BRING YOUR BOOMERS. This time we are thrilled to be partnering with the Centre for Hip Health and Mobility. As you may know, at Gen Why Media we love the word reimagine. We reimagined our public broadcaster with Reimagine CBC; we reimagined our outdoor public space for an evening withConnect Vancouver; we reimagined art's influence on election politics with Creative Publics, and now we are taking a stab atreimagining caregiving for an aging society. We believe that the subject of aging is an elephant in the room in Vancouver and beyond. Perhaps some people are uncomfortable with this subject. Scared even. The thing is, we believe that caregiving is a reciprocal, intergenerational act. It connects us, strengthens our relationships, and ultimately gives meaning to our lives. As our demographic shifts to have more seniors in society than ever before, and family dynamics evolve, how might we re-imagine our caregiving relationships? How can we build more healthy, supportive and sustainable communities of care? Please join us for a powerful evening of storytelling, intergenerational dialogue, comedy and music that will aim to surface the burning issues, pressing challenges, beautiful joys and incalculable value of caregiving in our society. Date and Time: Tuesday May 10th, 7-9 pm Tickets: here! Location: BMO Goldcorp Theatre, Olympic Village, 162 W 1st Ave, Vancouver Cost: Free, by donation Sponsors: Centre for Hip Health and Mobility, Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies Produced By: Gen Why Media and the Centre for Hip Health and Mobility Facebook Event: here! FINALLY (don't stop reading!) there is a way for you to participate in advance - through Instagram. We are hoping to crowdsource an online catalogue of images that reflect the theme of this event. All you have to do is: - find or take a photo that reflects the themereimagining a culture of care for an aging society - tag us, Gen Why Media @genwhymedia - include the hashtag #whocares in your post We are hoping to create a visual gallery of photos to proudly present at this event - a collection of memories, thoughts, ideas, reflections and insights. It would mean so much to us if you would participate!
And so, we are so so excited to see you and incorporate your perspectives on May 10th. Pleaseregister early to make sure your seat is saved!
Caitlin Moranβs posthumous advice for her daughter

The Times
βNine times out of ten, you probably arenβt having a full-on nervous breakdown β you just need a cup of tea and a biscuitβ
My daughter is about to turn 13 and Iβve been smoking a lot recently, and so β in the wee small hours, when my lungs feel like thereβs a small mouse inside them, scratching to get out β Iβve thought about writing her one of those βNow Iβm Dead, Hereβs My Letter Of Advice For You To Consult As You Continue Your Now Motherless Lifeβ letters. Hereβs the first draft. Might tweak it a bit later. When Iβve had another fag.
βDear Lizzie. Hello, itβs Mummy. Iβm dead. Sorry about that. I hope the funeral was good β did Daddy playΒ Donβt Stop Me NowΒ by Queen when my coffin went into the cremator? I hope everyone sang along and did air guitar, as I stipulated. And wore the stick-on Freddie Mercury moustaches, as I ordered in the βMy Funeral Planβ document thatβs been pinned on the fridge since 2008, when I had that extremely self-pitying cold.
βLook β here are a couple of things Iβve learnt on the way that you might find useful in the coming years. Itβs not an exhaustive list, but itβs a good start. Also, Iβve left you loads of life-insurance money β so go hog wild on eBay on those second-hand vintage dresses you like. You have always looked beautiful in them. You have always looked beautiful.
βThe main thing is just to try to be nice. You already are β so lovely I burst, darling β and so I want you to hang on to that and never let it go. Keep slowly turning it up, like a dimmer switch, whenever you can. Just resolve to shine, constantly and steadily, like a warm lamp in the corner, and people will want to move towards you in order to feel happy, and to read things more clearly. You will be bright and constant in a world of dark and flux, and this will save you the anxiety of other, ultimately less satisfying things like βbeing coolβ, βbeing more successful than everyone elseβ and βbeing very thinβ.
βSecond, always remember that, nine times out of ten, you probably arenβt having a full-on nervous breakdown β you just need a cup of tea and a biscuit. Youβd be amazed how easily and repeatedly you can confuse the two. Get a big biscuit tin.
βThree β always pick up worms off the pavement and put them on the grass. Theyβre having a bad day, and theyβre good forβ¦ the earth or something (ask Daddy more about this; am a bit sketchy).
βFour: choose your friends because you feel most like yourself around them, because the jokes are easy and you feel like youβre in your best outfit when youβre with them, even though youβre just in a T-shirt. Never love someone whom you think you need to mend β or who makes you feel like you should be mended. There are boys out there who look for shining girls; they will stand next to you and say quiet things in your ear that only you can hear and that will slowly drain the joy out of your heart. The books about vampires are true, baby. Drive a stake through their hearts and run away.
βStay at peace with your body. While itβs healthy, never think of it as a problem or a failure. Pat your legs occasionally and thank them for being able to run. Put your hands on your belly and enjoy how soft and warm you are β marvel over the world turning over within, the brilliant meat clockwork, as I did when you were inside me and I dreamt of you every night.
βWhenever you canβt think of something to say in a conversation, ask people questions instead. Even if youβre next to a man who collects pre-Seventies screws and bolts, you will probably never have another opportunity to find out so much about pre-Seventies screws and bolts, and you never know when it will be useful.
βThis segues into the next tip: life divides into AMAZING ENJOYABLE TIMES and APPALLING EXPERIENCES THAT WILL MAKE FUTURE AMAZING ANECDOTES. However awful, you can get through any experience if you imagine yourself, in the future, telling your friends about it as they scream, with increasing disbelief, βNO! NO!β Even when Jesus was on the cross, I bet He was thinking, βWhen I rise in three days, the disciples arenβt going to believe this when I tell them about it.β
βBabyiest, see as many sunrises and sunsets as you can. Run across roads to smell fat roses. Always believe you can change the world β even if itβs only a tiny bit, because every tiny bit needed someone who changed it. Think of yourself as a silver rocket β use loud music as your fuel; books like maps and co-ordinates for how to get there. Host extravagantly, love constantly, dance in comfortable shoes, talk to Daddy and Nancy about me every day and never, ever start smoking. Itβs like buying a fun baby dragon that will grow and eventually burn down your f***ing house.
βLove, Mummy.β
From September 10th β October 2nd, 2015 Creative Publics brought together artists, students and community members to participate in art-making inspired by social and political issues leading up to the federal election in October 2015.Β In collaboration with Β mobile art studio Tin Can Studio, we traveled to four sites and set up mix-media collaging workshops Β where participants had the opportunity to explore election issues while engaging in a creative, tactile activity. Β βThe project culminated in an interactive public art installation that was on display in front of the Belzberg Library at SFU Harbour Centre campus in downtown Vancouver during the week before the election (October 12th -16th).Β

Edward Said by Sasha Fusini Via Flickr: Installation in the Gallery of New South Wales This neon spells out a quotation from the Palestinian intellectual Edward Said: "Modern western culture is in large part the work of exiles, Γ©migrΓ©s, refugees." It works well with a simple script and powerful message, framed against a black wall - A great use of neon as a material. It seems appropriate to post during the ongoing debate on Australia's immigration policy. The wall text credits the artwork to Anonymous.
