I’ve been a pastor in the church for over two decades, much of that in predominantly white churches in the American South.

I’ve spent countless hours in church staff meetings and men’s Bible studies and youth pastor conferences.

I’ve stayed connected on social media with thousands of people still there in those churches. I read what they share and post and amplify and I know how they think and what they believe.

I need you to understand something and I say it without any hyperbole: white Evangelicals need to be stopped, now.

If the 2024 elections allow Republicans to gain a deeper control of our government, Conservative Christians will decimate this nation, and LGBTQ people, Muslims, women, people of color, and non-Christians will never have equality under the law again. We will all be at their mercy—and they will no longer have use for mercy.

LGBTQ people will have the rights to marry and adopt taken away.

People of color will be fully squeezed out of the electoral process.

Immigrants will be denied access to opportunity and refuge here.

These are not creative projections. They are precisely what Evangelicals have repeatedly stated as their intentions, and they’re closer than they’ve ever been to having a rubber stamp.

Pavlovitz wrote this in June 2021. How many of these are Americans already seeing playing out before their eyes? And the 2024 elections haven't even started yet!

We can still stop it, though.

We just need a unity and coordination that transcends theirs.

We need a sustained, passionate, dedicated defense of humanity that rivals their relentless assaults on it.

I hear many people say they’re terrified, but being terrified alone doesn’t do anything but help these people.

Be terrified and get angry.

Be terrified and get busy.

Be terrified and go to work.

Be terrified and fight like hell.

I wish more decent people in America remembered they are among the vast majority instead of acting as if they are helpless victims of Republican Christians. We could defeat them, and we need to. We just need to stop lamenting how much damage they are doing and start doing something to oppose them.

Dear Winifred, the letter started.

Despite your reluctance to talk about that time, I know about Salem, and your previous home there, and the witch hunt. I understand the time you’ve come from and the time you ended up in are very different. I assure you, Miss Winifred, that when I offered you the position, it was from a genuine place of wanting you to have some place to call home, even just for a transient period. I never meant to take advantage of your delirium for this long, and my offer was not made out of an obligation of pity.

Despite this transgression of mine, I must stress that you’ve achieved what I once thought impossible and impractical, and have become an essential fixture of the Higgsbury household. I would be immensely disconsolate if you should choose to leave due to these new circumstances.

He read over the letter one last time. That was really as good as it was going to get, wasn’t it, he thought miserably. He’d been holed up in the attic for hours, trying to pen a respectable letter that might manage to communicate the nuances of his absolutely crippling embarrassment. He’d let this go on for far too long, keeping secrets from her like this, and now that he’d finally decided to bite the bullet and tell her, he was finding it immensely difficult.

With a dissatisfied little grumble, Wilson crumpled up this newest draft of his letter, watching it patter innocently across his workbench as he tossed it down. It just sat there, mocking him.
