Gem shuffled over to the electronic till a couple paces to her left. “Right.” She hovered a finger over the screen. “What’s your order.”

“I’m gonna get a BLT burger—”

Gem relaxed, the tension leaving her shoulders. It was a normal burger this time; thank god.

“—with some sliiiiight modifications,” Pearl added.

Oh no. And just like that, Gem’s defences snapped back into place.

“It’s not that many,” Pearl said in a tone that was probably meant to sound reassuring, but only made Gem more suspicious, “just a few subtractions, and one very important addition.”

Gem had a sneaking suspicion of what that “very important addition” was going to be.

Without waiting for Gem’s go-ahead, Pearl continued rattling off her order: “So for the BLT burger, I want the meat, tomato, and lettuce taken off of it, but I still want the sauce. In fact, can you add extra ketchup to it too?”

Then she said what Gem had been dreading hearing: “And can I get extra pickles on that? But I don’t have a specified amount of pickles I want … Oh, I know! How about you put my burger together at the ‘make your own burger’ counter, and you keep adding pickles until I tell you to stop?”

hello everyone!! sorry for the delay on posting this – i've been super busy with irl responsibilities as the school year starts. here's the fic i wrote for the wonderful gempearl zine! this was such a fun project and i'm super glad to have been a part of it <3

and so the moon pulls the tides closer 🌊 (again)

Pearl let out a soft sigh, patting Jimmy’s arm and shooting him a rueful smile. She opened her mouth to try and give some reassurance before she went to help out Mumbo, then she spotted an all too familiar flash of orange hair, fiery and fast, storming up to Grian. She froze, her heart feeling like it stopped as she watched Grian squabble with the familiar newcomer. Their voices were loud, demanding and confused on both sides. 

Perhaps Pearl wouldn’t get through these games after all. Not with the knowledge that Gem would now be subjected to the very thing Pearl had tried to hide from her.

Put that way, the prospect of just one more game doesn't seem all that bad. It seems… really nice, actually, one more moment of leaf-dappled shaded and golden sunset, of cool earth and warmth clinging to her skin. One more moment of Gem in her life before a long, lonely winter. “Yeah, sure,” she sighs, as though she hasn't just caved embarrassingly easily. The smile Gem gives her in return is wide, a little too wide for them to maintain the illusion of humanity. Have their teeth always been so sharp? or: Do ghosts get hungry? / ‘Cause they take, and they take, and they take… or: Pearl never stood a chance against that beautiful woman of the woods.
