“Don’t you think I know that!” Geles shouted back, brown hues now glued to the road in front of them. “Stop judging me — I can’t concentrate if I know you’re judging me. I get nervous and my head starts racing and I can’t focus on anything except whether or not you’re silently trash talking me in your mind.” As the words rolled off of her tongue, her hand found the gear shift to slowly ease it from one level to the next.

“we’re not,” geles protested the part about keeping secrets from one another. which, now that she thought about it, wasn’t exactly the truth. she had been keeping things from her best friend but it wasn’t to intentionally hurt her. in fact, it was more so to spare her. geles had been well aware of bexley’s feelings toward her for years, or at least she was pretty sure of them, but it wasn’t until mexico that everything became abundantly clear. her silence served as an answer to bexley’s question, deciding that lack of omission was safer than vocally confirming her suspicions. “bex, it’s not like that—” she paused as the other girl began to push herself up off of the bed. part of her thought maybe it would be better if she just let her go, better for bexley. but in all of her selfishness, geles quickly followed. “stop it,” her voice was more firm this time as she laced her fingers around the other’s wrist to keep her from going any further, “just — just, let me explain, okay? you can’t just read my texts, throw a fit and leave. you owe me this.”
