genre: comedy, pranking sylus mehehe, domestic life, loverboy sylus
a/n: i was inspired by that hilarious tiktok trend about aggressively serving dinner 😭 I couldn’t resist writing sylus trying to process it while being the ultimate soft, worried husband. enjoy this chaotic, comedic little moment!
The kitchen smelled like heaven, spicy grilled chicken fresh off the grill, buttery golden potatoes, steaming rice, and perfectly seasoned vegetables. Sylus was seated at the dining table, phone pressed between his ear and shoulder, voice low and smooth as he wrapped up a conversation with some high-profile client.“...Yes, I understand, but I expect the intel to be delivered by Friday, you’ll need to…”
THUD… You slammed a chicken breast onto his plate. So hard the silverware rattled. Sylus paused mid-sentence, brow furrowing. “…What was that?” he murmured before continuing the call. “No, not you, keep going.” You scooped a mountainous pile of buttery potatoes and plonked them onto the plate, one even slid halfway off the edge.
Luke, sitting across the table with his own plate, bit down on his lip so hard to keep from laughing that his eyes watered. Kieran, sitting beside him, had his phone angled just enough to catch everything. Sylus’s eyes flicked up at you briefly, then back to the table as he said into the phone, “Make sure you have the documents sent by tonight”
THUD. A ridiculous amount of rice landed next. His jaw tightened. “…I’ll call you back,” he said flatly, hanging up mid-client sentence. “Darling,” he began slowly, in that voice he used when he was both suspicious and about two seconds from snapping, “is there a reason you’re angry serving me dinner?”
You ignored him, dumping roasted veggies with such force that one carrot rolled across the table and landed in Luke’s lap.“Alright,” He blinked, glanced at the plate of spicy grilled chicken, potatoes, rice, and vegetables, then back at you. “…Rough day?” he asked slowly.
You slid into your chair without a word, fork already in hand, and started eating like nothing was amiss. Sylus, however, was still staring at his plate like it had been delivered by an assassin. His usual easy smirk was nowhere to be seen, gone, replaced by that faint crease in his brow that only appeared when something genuinely rattled him.
He didn’t touch his food right away. Instead, his gaze flicked from you… to the aggressively placed chicken… to the potatoes that had clearly been slammed into place… then back to you. “...Did I miss something?” His voice was low and careful.
You stabbed a piece of potato and kept chewing. “Nope.” He blinked once. Twice. “Alright…” he murmured, but the way his shoulders shifted told you his brain was going a mile a minute.
Halfway through your next bite, you caught him watching you instead of eating, just quietly studying your face like he was trying to piece together a crime scene. Luke, from across the table, was fighting the urge to snort into his water. Kieran had given up pretending to eat, leaning back in his chair to watch the show. Sylus finally picked up his fork, but didn’t start eating. “You’re sure you’re okay?”
“Fine,” you said, keeping your tone light.
“Because… if I’ve done something…” His voice softened. “You can tell me…I’d rather hear it from you than try to guess.” Oh no, the guilt hit you like a freight train. This wasn’t a man about to get annoyed, this was a man genuinely worried he’d somehow hurt you.
Luke mouthed “she’s gonna break”, and Kieran subtly shook his head like, “hold the line”. But then Sylus sighed quietly, eyes still on you, and said, “…You’ve barely looked at me all night.”
You were nervously picking at your plate when Luke muttered something under his breath, and Sylus’s head snapped toward you. His usual smirk was gone, replaced with a quiet, concerned frown. “Love… this isn’t funny. You can’t do this.”
You froze, guilt instantly bubbling up. Sylus stood and slowly walked toward you, eyes searching your face like he was trying to understand what on earth just happened.“I… I’m sorry,” you blurted, stepping forward and wrapping your arms around him. “It was just some stupid prank Tara showed me at work… I wanted to see your reaction, that’s all!”
Sylus exhaled, tension leaving his shoulders as he hugged you back, pressing a gentle kiss to your temple. “Next time… warn me before you traumatise me over dinner.”
You chuckled, nuzzling into him, feeling the warmth of his arms and the comfort of knowing he was more worried about you than anything else. Luke and Kieran peeked around the doorway, eyes wide, silently whispering, “Yep… completely hopeless against each other.”
