Aluminum Flowers (Poem)
You gave me flowers for Valentine’s Day,
But not just any flowers.
You handcrafted them out of aluminum metal from empty soda cans.
You said you would’ve gotten me normal flowers, but you didn’t want
To give me something that was just going to die in a month.
The flowers didn’t die, but our love did.
Or maybe it died earlier than that and I was too distracted by the way the flowers shined to notice the way my stomach churned every time you ridiculed me, when you made me question my worth, and when you would ignore me for hours on end.
You were wrong about so many things, but there was one thing you were right about in the end.
The flowers you made me cannot die,
After all, metal is durable and can withstand a lot without buckling under pressure.
It can be recycled, used infinitely without losing its structural integrity.
But it can be crushed, torn, and deformed until you decide it’s no longer of use to you.
