I honestly think that the thing that makes Dazai recognisable in non humanoid contexts is his hair. You could make anything and then stick some brown hair on and someone out there will think 'omg it's Dazai!!!'

Like look at the wan duck and dog 😭 it's pretty much just creature + hair

I think the order of importance for Dazai Features is:

-Hair

-Bandages

-Coat

So somehow adding any of those features to Molezai could work

Another funny thing about the hair is that before I gave Crochet Dazai hair, he looked shockingly like Jon Arbuckle from the hit comic/animation/film franchise Garfield. Even with the coat and bandages, he just didn't look like Dazai 😔 funnily enough, the same thing happened with Poe:

For the white shirt collar:

I crocheted a long rectangle, so a any white long rectangular shape will work. From there I wrapped it around his neck and /only/ sewed down the top parts. I didn't give him much of a neck though, but as long as it kind of gives the illusion of a collar it should be fine

For the bolo tie:

I'm assuming Molezai will be bigger than Crochetzai, so you could possibly cut out a blue circle from whatever material you're using and sew/glue it on? I weaved blue yarn around the black straps, so it isn't perfectly shaped but he's quite small so it doesn't matter

Probably the biggest disappointment for me was their decision to drop honorifics, because it’s going to have an impact on actual developments in the story. Two of my favourite parts from the final volume are going to get lost in Vertical’s release.

They’re also cutting all the info that’s on the back covers of the Japanese releases, which is a real shame. There’s a lot of really good stuff there that we’re going to miss out on.

Those editing decisions aside, here are some of the actual “mistranslations” in the first two volumes. These are all background details, but I would say that for a series like Nichijou, the details add up to form a significant part of the author’s intent – which is what I would hope a good translator would be able to preserve for the English release.

vol1 pg100Yuuko’s room has a poster of the Himalayan mountain range, with the caption “himaraya”. (Himaraya is also Arawi Keiichi’s pseudonym and Twitter handle – evidently he’s quite fond of it.) But in chapter 10 the poster is only partially visible, which led to Vertical mistaking “hima” as the word 暇 which means “free time”.

vol2 pg149This poster is promoting the school’s gamelan club. If (like me) you didn’t know what gamelan is, then you might google it and find that it’s “the traditional ensemble music of Java and Bali in Indonesia, made up predominantly of percussive instruments” … but Vertical translated it as “gamulan”, which is something quite different.

vol2 pg31This poster appears quite frequently throughout the series. The text is 毒蛇は急がない, meaning “Venomous snakes make no haste”. It’s a Thai proverb about self-confidence – if you have confidence in your own ability (as a snake does in its venom), then you have no need to hurry; you know you will meet your goal whatever happens. Arawi is so fond of this proverb that he also used it in his illustration for the cover of the Comitia 89 guidebook.Vertical translated it as “Slow and steady deadly snake wins the race!”. It seems like they were trying to force the original Thai proverb into the moral of Aesop’s “The Tortoise And The Hare”. Not only does this sound really awkward, it also obscures the original meaning. (Aesop’s fable is about the value of perseverance and pacing yourself rather than self-confidence; in fact, the reason the hare lost was that it was too confident in its own ability.)

vol1 pg82The text on the right-hand poster is クマスク 第20回公演, meaning “BearMask: 20th Public Performance”. It’s promoting the drama club’s next play, which is mentioned in Ukai Mami’s prototype chapter in volume 2. The poster is one of many little details in Nichijou that connects the chapters together and helps to give the series a feeling of coherence.Vertical mistranslated 公演 as “annual match” instead of “public performance”, making it sound like a wrestling match instead of a play, and so weakening the drama club connection.

vol2 pg68はばたけ なんとなく is a really charming phrase mostly seen on this Tokisadame Festival poster, but also appearing at the school’s entrance and on Daiku’s igo soccer banners. Vertical translated it as “you can float on and on somehow”, but that really doesn’t capture the meaning at all. はばたけ has an uplifting feel of a bird taking flight and flapping its wings; in the case of the poster, it’s referring to the balloon release at the annual Tokisadame Festival. Vertical’s translation seems almost depressing in comparison – imagine Daiku’s motivational igo soccer banners (“Aim to be the best in the universe!!!”) accompanied by a lacklustre “You can float on and on somehow”.It’s not the easiest thing to translate, admittedly, but e.g. “One way or another, spread your wings and fly” would be one way to capture the meaning better.

vol1 pg118, vol1 pg149, vol1 pg58There are generally more editing errors than I would have expected from a professional translation. A few examples: placeholders are sometimes left in by accident (e.g. 大工パン → “TEXT”); 1-Q gets “translated” to 1-2; and 校長 (“Principal”) inexplicably becomes “President”, with subsequent occurrences being erased entirely.

Anyways here are some close ups! I experimented with embroidery because I love the patterns on her cape in the manga. It's not perfect but that's okay, she still looks so pretty and I'm happy with how she came out :)
