sorry i lied about the gay sex. i was just trying to sound cool
this is the most people have interacted with my posts on this blog in like half a year, excluding the one time i managed to draw something. like this stupid fucking post that has nothing to do with anything
fp.xml
This is a visualization of an old dependency graph found within the files of the Sleeping Dogs debug build, titled simply "fp". The name most probably stands for "first playable" judging from the barebones mission structure compared to the final - suggesting it's from an early point in True Crime: Hong Kong's development - containing only act 1 and most of act 2 of the story. It also includes a wealth of scrapped content like the Alley Intervention, Three Is A Party and Interrogation favors/events, and the Listening In precursor mission RTNC.
While the mission structure in the graph was obviously a work in progress and doesn't necessarily reflect actual intent, based on what we know about cut and changed missions it still offers a glimpse into how the game's story evolved during development. Under the cut is a more comprehensive list of changes and other things to note.
read my big fat post dammit this is all i've managed to make for literal months
in the light of my previous post on Conroy's subtle gradual acceptance of Wei, when at the end of Payback Conroy says "Look. I don't do this often, but… I'm sorry. I was wrong about you" what is it that he "doesn't do often"?
guess you could just read it as an attempt at saving face, like the way i initially perceived it was something along the lines of "i'm such a hardass i don't usually admit i'm wrong". but since it's such a nakedly vulnerable moment for him - not to mention how he hesitates before apologizing - i'm leaning more towards him just admitting that he doesn't know how to say sorry instead. like he knows how badly he's fucked up, genuinely wants to make amends and doesn't want to fuck that up too
now my initial read works perfectly fine, it's something you'd expect from the character archetype Conroy represents, but "expect" is the keyword there because this character is supposed to take you by surprise in this scene. if he defies your expectations by forgoing the usual hollow posturing in favor of fully showing his belly it makes the intended impact of this moment so much more effective, and consequently Wei's strong reaction even more understandable. i mean holy shit no wonder Wei feels so fucked up over it, it's making me feel kinda fucked up
Conroy clocks Wei basically immediately as a pig like literally says so in the minibus mission but he seemingly doesn't actually tell Winston about his suspicion until Listening In. is he legitimately afraid to speak up or is it something else? Winston does have to actively goad Conroy's opinion out of him when it finally comes up and even then Conroy only agreed when Winston himself suggests it, "you think he's a cop?" he doesn't even sound that sure of himself, just saying that something's "not right"
Ming has just gotten shot right before this happens and i've always thought that cutscene's placement is weird the way it plays right before Listening In, because there's this blatant overlap between them with the characters trying to sniff out what Wei's deal is. it always felt oddly redundant and like the cutscene was intended to be played after Listening In, but maybe it's actually the way it is because it specifically plants a seed of doubt in Conroy's mind that he might actually be wrong. he already folds basically immediately during the snitch cutscene when Wei starts questioning Ming's loyalties after all - he seems to struggle with separating his personal dislike of Wei (since while "Conroy doesn't like anyone" Wei was 100% on his ass the second they met) from his perfectly justified suspicion, and the cutscene is like the culmination of that. it also seems to be the thing that ultimately tipped the scale from the latter more towards the former for him in a "oh shit i think i might've really fucked up this time" sense, in a rare moment of introspection you probably wouldn't really expect of him
i kinda dig it - it's just like Winston says, Conroy is stubborn but "he'll see it - even if he doesn't want to admit it". it subtly makes his acceptance and appreciation of Wei more gradual rather than just like an act 1 boss reward that jumps on the screen at the end of Payback. he clearly still really wants to dislike Wei until the events of Payback when he finally has to admit to himself that yeah, he did fuck up (something to be said about how Winston doesn't seem to know about any of this judging from his dialogue in Uncle Po but i digress). it's extra interesting in the way it mirrors how Wei's relationship with the crew and especially Conroy was supposed to develop, that despite him desperately trying to fight it he still ends up getting invested

Why's Wei staring at lil bro again here, like giving him the usual stink eye. you can kinda see it in the actual shot too
Wei as he is now never really gets over his discomfort when it comes to Conroy because he's a two-faced piece of shit pig diehard from toe to tip but old Wei? woulda been in balls deep by the end
i think Conroy's very candid about using gear while Winston absolutely is not and it's one of those things that very definitely sets them apart. Conroy just doesn't seem to have a much of a filter or really a lot of shame just in general, probably partially due to the steroid abuse itself, while Winston's definitely all about what a "real" man/triad/brother/etc. should be. all about building those self-imposed cages. juicing is definitely something he's ashamed about
man i fucking love being able to freecam properly in all cutscenes now. look at that little prick's smug face when he grabs Wei. bro really thought he was cooking
i love the idea of Conroy and Wei's dynamic post-Payback actually going somewhere because it's kinda got the gatboss vibe where there's enormous potential for them to drag each other down to hell like they make each other into even worse people, but at the same time they could just as easily help each other into becoming marginally better people too. or at least more balanced in a way. especially when it comes to Conroy's sociopathic tendencies Wei could at least get him to tone it down a bit just because Conroy tries to closely emulate people he looks up to (maybe Wei's not at the top of the pile but Conroy definitely appreciates how badass he is, he says so himself). even if he doesn't get it, maybe even can't "get it", Wei telling him that his lust for blood is fucked up could make him think about his actions a bit more if nothing else
i also think it'd be kinda rad if at some point - maybe around Meet the New Boss - Conroy just straight up quits using gear because a) after having some talks with Wei about how it's making him fucked in the head he decides shit's getting too serious to be in that kinda altered state and 2) after Payback when he thinks he was wrong about Wei he's been feeling kinda scared that he's legit going through a paranoid break, because abusing gear can cause psychosis and he's seen it happen to others. of course he should quit in the most dangerous way possible (idk what that would be with gear but going cold turkey with any addictive drug is generally not pleasant) and Wei finds out about it and is like "UHH DUDE are you OKAY"
as for what Conroy could give to Wei, sure his positive qualities can basically be counted on like two fingers but he does have one thing that Wei doesn't, namely how sincere he is. part of it's just that he's fucking stupid and his brain has been melted by gear, but i also think it he's just very candid and genuine in a way that makes Wei uneasy because he usually can't be like that. not just because that's his job, he literally doesn't know how anymore, if he ever did. now tbf it's a trait Jackie has as well but Jackie does not have the antisocial tendencies that Conroy and Wei share. it adds an unique layer of understanding between them that's missing between Jackie and Wei (you could even say that disconnect is what specifically led to Jackie's death). now obviously Conroy wouldn't actually be able to talk about any of that shit in a meaningful way but well his narrative purpose is a kind of a mirror for what Wei considers his own worst aspects. if/when he starts understanding Conroy on a deeper level, seeing him as an actual person and not just a flat representation of things he considers bad and/or shameful about himself, he also starts to understand himself better

wonder how Wei feels about Winston getting all yoked up like that. like surely he wasn't already juicing when he was like 15 right. i so badly wish they did more with the gearhead bodybuilder thing because it's such a distinct aspect of the Boys
read some old threads on the subreddit and in one about shipping i saw ppl talk about Conroy "dominating" Wei like buddy. that boy's clearly desperately lookin for daddy to put him in his place
haha found the reddit thread about Jackie calling Conroy a cunt to his face in Vendor Extortion. he specifically says cau hai/臭閪. if it was Edison Chen doing some improv rather than something from the script it's kinda amazing because it completely redefines the kinda dynamic Conroy and Jackie have. namely it gives them one rather than just having all these characters mainly exist completely separate from each other
reshade
if someone tried to send me an ask like a couple days ago i can't read it it's not showing up in my inbox

Conroy's unused lines for The Funeral since he was originally gonna be in the mission along with Duke (who didn't seem to have any leftover audio for this mission though). it's just a bunch of shouting during combat but i like how very protective he is of his crew during gun fights, comes across even stronger in Civil Discord
been thinking about Duke in this mission because the only proof of him being in the Funeral is Conroy shouting out to him to keep his head down. supposedly anyways because there's absolutely nothing else, no other audio, no anims, no leftovers in any xmls etc. so i've been wondering for a while if Conroy's actually saying "dude" here instead of "Duke". i don't think it's likely because i don't think he really says "dude" just in general but idk there's something odd about the whole thing
if it was just Conroy who was gonna be present in this mission out of all the secondary WSG characters it'd also emphasize the whole potential Conroy-Wei-Jackie dynamic even further. i think that'd be very intriguing
