“It’s so good to see you,” Holger mumbled into Casper's ear.

Casper stared at Holger’s words. If only you could come visit.

Three days after the postcard, the first letter arrived

He finally got released from the hospital once the medical staff were confident his wounds were recovering well with no signs of infection. There was still plenty of recovery ahead of him, but at least he could do it in his own home and sleeping in his own bed.

Casper woke to a rhythmic beeping sound.

He still didn’t have his normal partner by his side. He hadn’t even caught a glimpse of Carlos since their last conversation. If Holger had been arrested, Casper would assume that he’d have heard, so he was assuming Carlos was still working that one.

Holger knew that it was a bad idea. He knew that was a bad idea from the moment he received Carlos’ message. It didn’t stop him from replying.

They hadn’t been threats, they’d been warnings. Holger had known someone wanted him dead, someone that wasn’t the hitman, and he’d been trying to tell Casper that.

“You sure?” Jasmine asked, glancing between him and the face. Casper wasn’t surprised by her doubt. It wasn’t a clear picture and Casper knew his tone sounded certain. But he was certain. It really was a face he’d recognise anywhere.

Casper stood completely still, barely noticing the motion around him, as he processed everything that had gone down.

“Hey, police,” Casper called out, “I just want to talk.”

At this point in time, Casper thought the only thing keeping him upright and working was insane amounts of caffeine.

Casper probably should have called the letter in right after he read it, but honestly, he was too exhausted to. He didn’t have the energy to deal with answering questions or police in his house again.

Casper could hear his heart in his ears as he sank further into the ground, letting the car parked in front of him block him from further risk.
