At once thin and heavy was the air he sought to replenish his lungs, sweat creasing above from his forehead atop his goggles. Loud was his panting, barely audible underneath the cacophony of tumultuous skies, fading from earsplitting roars down to air-quaking rumbles, and slowly diminishing still. Black were the clouds over the peak of great mountains at the furthest edges of the Rukon district, the heavy winds spinning them round dimming, as did the flashes cracking through the darkness.
Wide was the winning smile on Kotarō Ryōbo's determined face, even as his stamina gave out and he dropped to one knee, his trembling body's weight supported by the weapon still keeping him somewhat standing. A weapon at once old and familiar to him, yet brand new in the proud form it now took, one as versatile as it proved demanding from the toll it took on his untrained constitution.
At once a fan, an axe, a spear, and a lightning rod. No simple Shikai could assume such a variable shape or freely wield such calamitous potential... but, then again, this was no Shikai, let alone a power he could safely hone among his peers within the restricting confines of civilization.
That was why, during days off from his duties, the 13th Division's 3rd Seat isolated himself so far and removed from the Seireitei: to temper body and mind to his very limits, to forge himself anew amidst the elements, and to build upon this new foundation he strove to attain for years on end.
Alas, with the strain weighing heavy on his soul after another long and arduous day of training, Kota let go. Immediately, the great instrument at his side sealed itself back into the unassuming form of a katana, blade stabbed into the earth to keep him upright! Even then, however, he collapsed onto his back as fatigue and aftershocks finally took root, directing his gaze towards stormy heavens. His stormy heavens. He will have to make his way back to Captain Kuchiki younger's side sooner than later, certainly, but rest comes first so he may rekindle his ambition later.
The next time some terrible force rears its ugly head to endanger the peoples of the Soul Society, the world of the living, and Hueco Mundo, he will be ready for them.
That is a Kotarō guarantee.

Her nearly shouted words were more ... a warning ... rather than a request. Seeing as how the muffin was promptly shoved into his mouth. She had her arms full of an entire basket of them. She'd spent all morning baking, trying to come up with a new spring flavor. Banana Macha is what she'd come up with this year.
"... Is it bad --
NO.
Don't tell me, I can't live with the shame."
Well, he would certainly give Ayane this much: he had never heard such an earnest plea come close to sounding like a war cry before this morning. Ordinarily, Kotarō would either find it in himself to sidestep a telegraphed headlong charge or greet his colleague with his trademark smirk and wave, but confusion and stupor upon seeing Ayane approach with such conflicting vigour kept him rooted firmly in place!
Thus, baked good met unprepared gullet.
"Try what, Tsubas—KBFHH?!"
Mercifully, what portion of the mach-speed muffin did make it between his chompers did not reach all the way down his throat at first shove, and neither did he end up breathing any of it in, almost frozen in place with surprise as he was. Had either been the case, he would certainly be coughing up muffin bits!
Instead, shock slowly ebbed away, allowing for his overwhelmed tastebuds to take in Ayane's creation bit by bit. A pleased, albeit muffled warble had to gurgle itself up, but once he took hold of the muffin itself and took the time to chew it properly, a more audible, and very satisfied hum... would have broken out, had the 12th Seat not immediately taken back the energy she had.
"Mmphgh—what? No, no, it's good! Really!" And why would he lie? Kotarō had always been fond of matcha, whether in tea or in snacks! This sentiment wound up being extended to these green-hued delights of hers, mixing the fragrant sweetnesses of both into something that raised both flavours higher, however...
"...although I do gotta ask why you almost punched me in the face with it-"

It had been some time since Ayaka struggled so much with one of her equipment ideas. Chemistry was always more Saya's range, she could forgive herself a lapse in judgement if she was working with chemicals or poisons. But this was basic, a stink bomb trap. The stink bombs themselves were simple, easy to make, but the traps kept malfunctioning! They were meant to detonate only when they detected strong spirit energy in close proximity. A great prank item - but also potentially useful on the battlefield, an unorthodox means of disorienting the enemy. This kind of thing was where Ayaka normally excelled, but today, it seemed, the universe stood against her.
She'd been making quite a racket. Swearing at the bombs when they went off too early, muttering to herself when they didn't go off at all, and throwing them at the wall to land in the corner, creating a pile of reject stink bombs.
It was only when she'd heard footsteps in the hall that she realized she'd been making quite a bit of noise. She hadn't accounted for the thuds against the wall potentially becoming a disturbance to others in the squad. For a brief moment, she'd been worried it would be the Captain, but instead saw another superior, Third Seat Kotaro. She'd seen him around the barracks, but hadn't yet directly spoken to him; unsure whether he was there because she'd disturbed him, Ayaka's gaze falls back to the current travesty she's working on.
"Hello, Kotaro. Sorry about the noise. I'm trying to test some new equipment, but it... It isn't going well. Either the mechanics are faulty or my measurements are off. I hope I'm not disturbing you." Hesitant to raise her head and look at him, Ayaka continues to tinker with the trigger mechanism for a few moments more - only for it to detonate in her face. Her nose wrinkles in disgust, but, well - she knew what she signed up for. Though this time, rather than get angry, her shoulders sag, and the now-dud bomb is tossed into the reject pile with the rest.
"I'm really off my game today..."

And here he thought he finally earned himself some proper shuteye. After all, it was a right sunny spring day with not a cloud in the sky hanging over the Seireitei, so there was plenty of warmth to go around with out it feeling too stifling. Ukitake's old garden still stood—in no small part thanks to Sentarō for maintaining it all these years later—and so did the great tree within it, so the space underneath its foliage made for just the right amount of umbrage. With nary a disturbance save the footsteps of patrolling soul reapers on the other side of the wall, this spot under these specific conditions made itself perfect for napping!
And Kotarō, freshly returned from the Rukon districts for reasons he would disclose to none but a very select few, all but collapsed onto his back under the shade, as his nostrils let loose an exhausted but satisfied sigh. No other commitments for the rest of the day meant he could kick back, let one leg dangle lazily over the other, and bring his arms up and behind his head for a makeshift pillow.
But no. The infrequent sounds of explosions and curse words shattering all semblance of peace and quiet began to grate at his nerves, chipping away at his patience more and more the further these dragged on. The goggled shinigami thought to wait it all out, though he did not hold out for much longer than a few minutes.
Cue his march back into the barracks' halls and homing in on Ayaka's office-slash-workshop, passing by his fellow Division members who tried their hardest to work through the noise... and now the rancid smell. As a precaution, he pulled down his goggles over his eyes and tugged his scarf over his mouth and nose, right as he was to do so once he entered ground zero, but coming in to find his usually chipper and mischievous colleague looking this dejected, from yet another experiment blowing up in her face... he didn't have the heart to admonish her. Annoyed as he was by her current commotion, let alone previous prank-induced mishaps, better not to antagonize her.
"...well I was going to say something, but it looks like you're having enough of a crappy time as it is," the covered up Kota sighed, inviting himself into her room so he could open up some windows. The room desperately needed some air circulation. "Experiment not going smoothly, Kazumi?"
