She paused but didn’t turn around.

“Watch your back.”

She glanced over her shoulder. Atlas met her eyes, his expression unreadable.

“The truth doesn’t survive long in Rapture.” He rested a hand against the map. “But…” A faint smile crept across his face. “Lies have a way of keeping people alive.”

Was he still alive? “I’m certain she’s one of Ryan’s spies, sent to feel me out… I think she is. If I’m wrong, an innocent girl’ll end up on Ryan’s bloody trophy wall. If I’m right… well, I best be right. The device is almost finished. I can’t get soft now. I can’t.”

The recording clicked off. Her mind flashed to the corpses she found displayed as a warning—bodies posed and preserved for Ryan’s amusement.

The woman from the diary had been one of them. If Kyburz had handed her over that easily, he would hand Jackie over, too.

His eyes tracked every movement she made. Then, softer, “He took Roger from you.”

A flinch. Subtle, but real. Atlas’s mouth curved, just slightly.

They had met a handful of times before. Working in the circles of Ryan and Cohen meant their paths crossed often enough. Favorites tended to orbit the same powerful men, whether they wanted to or not. Still, their relationship had never progressed beyond polite conversation and passing introductions.

“Of course,” Jasmine replied, her voice bright and cheerful. Perhaps Hector could distract her from the thoughts she was trying so desperately to avoid.

“I hope I'm not intruding,” Hector said as he settled onto the stool beside her. “I recognized that look and thought you might appreciate a distraction.”

Jasmine raised an eyebrow. “What look?”

“The one that says you've spent the last hour replaying a conversation in your head.”

Jasmine laughed softly. “That's very specific.”

“It's also correct.”

“Nonsense.” She waved him off. “I don't know what you're talking about.”

The faint smile on his lips suggested he didn't believe her for a second. Hector chuckled, “Of course you do.”
