Seiichiro Ebisuya
Hey everyone, just wanted to post this quickly. I found this chap whilst I was listening to old Perfume on YouTube as research for my last post and I haven’t been able to stop listening to this since. If for some strange reason you’re reading this and haven’t hit play, the video is an incredible solo lap guitar cover of Perfume’s ねぇ/Hey. If you want to check out some more of Ebisuya’s stuff here’s his website. Happy Easter!
At-a-Glance: 4TE
4TE (for-tay) are a electronic pop group based in the US that play Japanese-language music. They've been active since 2013 and have released two singles to date: a double A-side M O R E / 一歩ずつ (2015) and Leave A Message (2016). They’ve also released a cover of 一心不乱 (Isshinfuran) by Umetora (a vocaloid).
In an unusual change of format for Gaijin Disco, 4TE actually emailed in to see if I’d like to do a post on their music and always liking to do my bit to expose independent artists, not to mention flattered that anyone would bother sending their press kit to this poxy blog, I thought I better had.
一歩ずつ (Ippo Zutsu/One Step At A Time) is probably my favourite of 4TE’s current roster of original songs. The main reason for this is it reminds me of the early material of my favourite ever J-pop groups Perfume, specifically the songs Foundation and Perfect Star, Perfect Style. Certainly the production of the song (by Richard Alexander aka PromWolf, Berry Risa, Jeena Wojnowski and ctrl+r) feels very Nakata-ish to me with it’s use of airy, videogameish synth sounds that are then backed up by harder, more jarring and slightly glitchy sounding bass parts in the pre-chorus. It’s gratifyingly toe-tapping stuff. Also there’s soberer use of vocoding here than you find on later Perfume releases so the whole thing retains it’s warmth despite being very electronic. I’d say similar things about the other side of the single M O R E, except that it’s probably closer to Game era Perfume.
4TE have an remarkable degree of slickness in terms of production and their proficiency in Japanese despite none of the members being of Japanese descent is impressive. Fundamentally 4TE seem like a group of J-pop fans making music for other J-pop fans, which I definitely admire. If you’ve had an unquenchable craving for more music that sounds like Perfume’s first two records, you may just get what you’re looking for with these girls. If not then there’s always their new single Leave A Message which has a rap section. There’s bound to be someone out there who thinks Perfume needed rap sections, this is the internet after all.
Hi! I just saw your post on how to get into DAOKO and found it very interesting, I myself had been listening to DAOKO quite often now ever since her "ME!ME!ME!" and "GIRL" in 2015 and just gotten into her albums in late 2015. My question is what did you think about her self-titled record? I notice that you didn't put it in your list so I was just curious
It was awesome

At-a-Glance: Suiyoubi no Campanella
Suiyoubi no Campanella (水曜日のカンパネラ/Wednesday’s Campanella) are a electro/hip-hop group from Tokyo. It’s members are Komuai a.k.a KOM_I (vocals), Kenmochi Hidefumi (production) and Dir.F (visuals). Komuai is the only visible member of the group and the other two do not appear at live shows or do interviews.
The band started in 2012 after the band members met at a house party. They’ve released 7 demos, 4 mini-albums, an EP and their first full-length Zipangu was released in November of last year.
At the most basic level Campanella sounds like a hip-hop act but that doesn’t really cover it. I’m gonna us their song Shakushain as a case study here:
There’s something just a little off about their sound, so I feel uncomfortable just describing them as hip-hop. This is something Komuai spoke of herself in this interview with MTV81: “On our first album, we had maybe two or three songs that included a rap part. But we’ve been featuring it more, especially on the last release. My voice isn’t good at rhyming, it sounds fluffy. I can’t attack words strongly. Singing fits more with my voice, but Kenmochi likes when there is tension. He wants me to rap, because it doesn’t fit rap. That gives the music a sense of something being just off.”
Certainly the strange noises and sneezes that she emits while rapping are part of the band’s wacky draw but also the way the songs pogo from one style to the next, this song Diablo for example starts off with Japanese folk drumming and early-00s gangsta rap synth trumpet blares before stopping abruptly after 30 seconds and turning into an acoustic guitar-led piece of melancholic UK garage, then back again no sooner than it started.
Komuai mentions in the aforementioned interview that when the band were agonising over whether to go for pop or a more underground sound with their music they started listening to Boredoms (legendary Japanese noise-rock group) and decided they didn't really have to choose.
“There’s like, an idol world over here, and the J-rock scene over here, and off in the corner is the programmed beats place. I think we are sort of in the middle of all that.”
If high-energy, varied to the point of ADHD, quasi-rap electro pop sounds like your cup of tea, then you sir have very specific tastes but you might do well to check out Suiyoubi no Campanella, even if it’s only for their unhinged music videos. Komuai’s strange energy is a big draw for me as I appreciate anyone who looks like their having the time of their lives making their music and she certainly looks to be doing just that. Good luck to them.
At-a-Glance: LADY FLASH
Hi everyone, hope you’re all having a lovely holiday season. I want to do a bit of housekeeping before I start this post. I’ve had a really busy 2015 that involved getting married and moving flats. I’ve also gotten quite carried away with my other blog Partizan Bristle. Since starting Gaijin Disco I’ve accumulated over 100 followers and had some truly heart-warming words of encouragement from you guys and musicians I really respect, it’s had a much better response than I ever imagined. I used to look down on Tumblr somewhat but I now see what a great community it can be, so thanks very much for that. Being preoccupied with the aforementioned means that I’ve posted slim to dick all this year, which considering all the encouragement I’ve received makes me feel a bit guilty. So for 2016 and beyond I’m tweaking the format a bit and will be restricting myself to shorter posts covering one or two songs rather than the longer more in-depth posts I’ve sporadically churned out so far. I’ll more than likely still do the odd megapost but for now I’m going for little and often. Gaijin Disco 2.0
LADY FLASH are a little-known 4-piece band from Osaka. Their members are Nicoflash (Gt/Vo), Sanae Suzuki (Gt/Syn/Vo), Hanami Kaneshima (Ba/Vo) and Happy (Dr). とらばーゆ (Torabayu) is the group’s latest single coming out in September of this year. I can’t remember how I happened upon the track but what instantly struck me is how much these guys reminded me of the band French Films, a Norwegian indie-pop group who play a brand of no-nonsense surf-tinged rock that I find pretty addictive. Like French Films, LADY FLASH play fast, short songs with guitars that tend to spend whole verses using the same chord with bright, reverb drenched lines. It’s a compelling synthesis of the “classic” surf-rock of Dick Dale, with the speed of hard surf-punk like Agent Orange and the melody of modern dream pop/shoegaze.
Other songs I found on YouTube are mother2 which is in a similar vein to Torabayu but more akin to what I personally like to refer to as “Propaganda rock” (click here if you weren’t a British teenager in the 00s) bands like The Vaccines. There’s also Casualties which brings to mind the slurring, noisy stylings of The Pillows. These old songs seem to feature different members and although they’re not without their charms they don’t compare to Torabayu. Personally I hope they stick with this new sound and I’ll be keeping an eye out for new releases in 2016.
Thanks for reading, I’ll see you next year!
Just wanted to say, it's cool to see at least one review of daoko's albums. Seems like the only daoko related things people are really paying attention to are ME!ME!ME! (because ass/titties) and GIRL, which sucks because the rest of her work is so good. Seriously, I read the translation of bUd, and I can't believe she wrote that when she was 15! Kireigoto is really good, too. I hope someone translates some of the lyrics on it sometime, cus I can only understand bits and pieces of it.
Man, I feel exactly the same about ME!ME!ME!
Check this out for translations: http://lyricstranslate.com/en/daoko-lyrics.html
Thanks for reading.
Review: Meishi Smile - ...Belong
October 2015 - Zoom Lens
Click here to read my Introducing: Meishi Smile post
The long wait for Meishi Smile’s follow-up to 2012′s LUST is over. We were placated with a smattering of new material in the intervening years through singles and the excellent mYSTERIOUS sUMMER vACATION EP but the more Yim spoke of a follow up taking shape, the more I craved this sequel. A major theme of Meishi Smile and Zoom Lens has been the establishment of genuine interpersonal connection between individuals through the internet, a philosophy that to me has been instrumental in the project creating much of it’s own hype.
You should post more. I love the concept of your blog and the stuff you've posted so far is great. :)
Thank you man. I know I should. I've got a half-finished review at the moment which should be out before the weekend. Thanks for reading~

Where to Start with… daoko
Good evening me babbers. If you’re wondering why I’ve not posted for the last two months, there are three reasons:
Gaijin Disco annual 2015
Expect a new post in the next week. For now here’s a playlist I made of the songs I’ve been listening to since Gaijin Disco came into being.
Tracks in this playlist for posterity:
hey i really liked your list, and it would have been perfect if tricot's Break had been included, from what you've listed it seems they'd be right up yr alley (in case you're not already aware of them)
Thanks very much.
It did catch my eye but I think I'm gonna wait until A N D comes out in March to mention tricot. Definitely up my alley though :3
Extra Disco: 30 Songs to Take Away From 2014 (Part Five)

Extra Disco: 30 Songs to Take Away From 2014 (Part Four)
