@elioluna beacon medical center
a few days past the events that transpired at the MC, life was taking its regular course. if gabe ignored all the ways his life got fucked up since the event, he could practically convince himself everything was fine. there hadn't been a certain blonde sleeping the night in his apartment, and nothing happened between them. absolutely nothing.
his best friend's father did not cause a fight during a fucking halloween. and his best friend was definitely answering his texts. he was not stressed for her. absolutely not.
all in all, gabe felt the weariness, the unnecessary weight making this night all the more exhausting. his shift would end in a few hours, though. taking a break, the man made his way to one room, one he'd been practically everyday since the disastrous halloween party. elio was usually asleep when gabe came by, silently checking his chart to check up on him. gabe wasn't his dedicated physician, but he couldn't help coming by. just to make sure his actual doctor was not fucking anything up.
tonight wasn't as different as usual-- gabe made his way inside the room, checked elio's vitals gently before sitting next to him, chart in hand. when he raised his eyes and saw his friend awake, gabe couldn't help the panic spreading in his chest. "fu- elio! hi," forcing himself to smile, hoping it would hide his jumpy heart under the whispered words, gabe leaned over the bed, patting his friend's arm gently. "how do you feel?"
There were few things Brie truly felt fault for — Typically she could easily shift responsibility or blame to fit what she’d convinced herself happened. It worked well for her in the courtroom, and it kept her reputation exactly where she wanted it. But each time she finds herself meeting Gabe’s gaze, guilt threatens to consume her. She’d been the one to ruin their relationship — Long distance and her own insecurities had pulled her under, held there by her mother’s influence. Sure, once she’d blown things up Gabe had followed suit, but Brie had been the one to strike the first match.
It’s all consuming when she sees him hold someone else’s hand, when she knows he’s holding someone else close. Pushing back with barbed comments and hurtful jabs numbs it, though she’s still left alone each time. Brie knows it’s not his fault that she’s upset — Her pride won’t let her admit it, causing her to take a half second longer to reply. She can’t help but wonder if he notices that — Brie would kill just to know what Gabe was thinking, like she used to. At one point, she could read him like the back of her hand. Now, he’s practically a stranger. “I’m the one who walked away,” She can’t help inwardly cringe at her word choice, seeing the cruel irony. “You’re the one who came after me, Gabriel.” The blonde points out, arms crossed and chin lifted, clearly on the defense. “We wouldn’t be having this argument if you had just stayed with her.”
She notes the small amount of space put between them, and that he still remains far too close. The realization causes knots in her stomach, leaving her with mixed emotions. Overwhelmingly, longing is among them — It's hard not to think of all the times they’d been in a similar position, with his arms at her waist and hers around his neck as they snuck an intimate moment in a crowded room. The memory is part of the reason she preferred to keep a physical distance, one far enough to keep her from remembering what it felt like to have his hand caress her cheek or press against the small of her back.
Then he says her name, and it’s like the air has been squeezed out of her lungs. She feels stupid for having that kind of reaction; The way her heart beat picks up a bit more and she becomes grateful to the dim lighting for hiding the heat climbing her cheeks. Brie can’t recall the last time he’d called her anything but Barlow — It feels foreign and all too familiar, disarming her in a confusing way. She knows in hindsight she’ll kick herself for not simply pushing past him and ending this, but there’s something about the tone of his voice that leaves her heels cemented to the ground. “I’m trying.” The words come out sounding much smaller than she wanted, though her body language remains guarded she can’t help the emotion that laced itself into two simple words. “It’s not like you’re —“ Brie stops herself, unsure of where she was even going with her sentence. She hates that this is where their conversation is headed, at a Halloween party of all fucking places.
Any sort of higher ground she felt with him is beginning to crack, only compounded by the mention of her late fiancé. Pushing for Gabe to be one of Luke’s groomsmen had been cruel — Brie’s not entirely sure why she’d suggested it, decided to punish him that way. All things considered, fate got her back for it. “This isn’t about him.” Brie finds herself saying after a moment too long, immensely frustrated with herself for having let him knock her off course so easily. “None of this is about him.”
her admission, raw and honest, that she's trying to move on, to move past them hurts him more than he thought it would. she shouldn't be trying, anymore. it should been done and gone. she got engaged, for god's sake. it wasn't fair, for her to say things like this. say things that gabe had wished she did years after their break-up.
none of this is about him
it's not, perhaps. it's probably not. it never was about luke, it was about destroying whatever they had built together. any foundations, any trust, any love. smashed under luke's heavy steps- but everything orchestrated by the woman in front of him. perhaps her fiance's death had brought back memories for her; or maybe she was just manipulating gabe. once again.
the man couldn't stop the sigh escaping his lips, suddenly exhausted about the turn of their conversation. truly questioning his own sanity because never before he would have followed her out here. he shouldn't have, as it was the most illogical. because the same way he couldn't understand her reaction, gabe didn't have any sound explanation for his own. "listen," he started before someone pushed behind him, some kind of commotion towards the main room, that gabe ignored.
he ignored, mostly because his gaze was transfixed on brie's soft features. so suddenly vulnerable, it threw gabe off whatever high horse he'd been riding for the last few minutes. he'd never been much of a romantic, poetic individual, but at this moment, he could swear time stood still. them, with just a few inches between them, breathing the same air. nose touching, barely.
"it was never about him." he repeats her words, trying to convey, weirdly, that he understands. that he agrees with this seemingly simple statement. bewitched, gabe couldn't help but raising his fingers to brie's jaw, a familiar gesture, borne of habit. he could only thing it don't hate me before doing what his heart had tried him to do all night. gabe placed a gentle, nostalgic kiss on top of brie's own; an adieu, perhaps. a promise that it wouldn't happen again. a definitive ending to their story.
skip skip skip ------
it had become second nature by now. the voices of the mob suddenly filling the air triggered her muscle memory into action. gigi skillfully navigated her way through the crowd, determined to put some distance between herself and the commotion. in the midst of her small escape, her gaze met gabriel's, and a small sigh of relief escaped her lips. without hesitation, she linked her arm with his, guiding him in the same direction.
after passing through a few doors in the back, gigi secured a spot that felt safe enough for them to stop. her voice was hushed, but the intensity of her emotions was evident as she faced the other. ' gabe... ', she began, her words carrying a quiet fury. ' i swear to god , if my dad had anything to do with this… ', her hands clenched into fists, knuckles turning stark white.
"what do you mean if he has something to do with this," gabe asked her, incredulously, emotions a mix of relief and stress. not the best combo right now, with people figthting on the other side of the building. in the entrails of the place, alone in the dark, gabe couldn't help the hand that gripped hers, making sure she wouldn't escape his sight.
"they're looking for you, gi." he states, matter-of-factly, though the way he squeezed her fingers betrayed his stress. "they're your father's men." gabe had recognized at least one of them, which hadn't been much difficult given the fact he grew up with the woman in front of him, and was more often at her place than his own. "you need to leave, or you'll get hurt."
"mmmm, i'm getting there." omar says mindlessly as he gently moves the empty glass towards the edge of the bar for the bartender to take when he comes back. he hadn't really been mingling, had he? he knows for certain that he's not touching the already sticky countertop as the night still feels like it's young. he isn't sure how he had lost gabe in the mix of everything, yet they are and he looks over at him tilting his head to the side. "are you having a good time? didn't run into anyone feral yet?" though really, half the people in this joint were feral, hell, they were in a club filled with gang members, what a wild time to be alive. omar sees their filled glasses come back and he wraps his hand around his own glass, "cheers, to, not being feral, i guess." he says raising his glass toward gabe.
"if the definition of feral is uncultured swine, then yes, i did." gabe's not a big drinker, especially in an event where someone is bound to hurt themselves, and where is boss is mingling with his members. he aches for something stronger than this g&t, but that will have to do for the moment. he focuses on omar, looking at the man's face with a raised eyebrow. "if feral means wild, cheers to you being it," the man chins his glass against the other's, a small teasing smile on his face. "why are you so set on getting drunk? don't tell me you have," gabe leans, conspirationally, to whisper "love problems? do you need a wingman?"

her eyes flicked upward, a silent acknowledgment as gabe returned to her side. she had slipped away into the speakeasy's dark corner as she did her favorite pass time - people watching. it wasn't her first time in the clubhouse, and yet an unsettling sense of scrutiny seemed to haunt her every step within the walls. she shouldn't of cared, but perhaps it was her fresh arrial or the absence of liquid courage in her veins. so when gabe presented her with the drink, gigi offered a brief, grateful smile before her lips met the cool rim of the glass. ' tons. ', she remarked in a dry tone. ' i guess people are just shocked to see me. ', she added, a shrug punctuating her words. ' funny seeing the amount of saints here. go figure. '
"hmm," his eyes following hers, watching the people around. waiting for whatever dramatics to happen; it was bound to happen, as an MC gathering always attracted trouble. perhaps the police or a stupid member. all in all, gabe couldn't help but feeling a bit restless. barely touching any alcohol as of yet, sobriety felt more adequate. especially with gigi present; not that he was under the illusion he could defend her much against mc muscles, but still. "what a theme, right? beats sunday church, though i'd die just to see father berzatto meddling with those saints." gabe's gaze couldn't stop falling on a specific blonde saint for a moment too long, before turning his face towards gigi. resisting temptation.
He came in here ten minutes ago to splash water onto his burning face. He was drunk, which was the goal for the evening, but now he thought he was going to throw up. But that passed when he got away from whatever biker was wearing an entire can of Axe. The quiet rumble of the bass coming from the speakers on the other side of the wall was humming beneath his feet, creating vibrations that if he let them, could lull him to sleep right now. Elio felt like shit, and getting absolutely trashed wasn't helping the way he had hoped. So for the past ten minutes he's been sitting there, leaning against the wall, letting the music vibrate through his bones. Hoping that maybe if he stood there long enough he'd just become one with the wall.
But that hope didn't last as a familiar voice called his name. Asking if he was okay. Glancing up at Gabe Passerini, Elio snorted. "Yeah. Just drunk. Didn't realize you were here, dude." A lie. Elio saw him, and had started moving around the crowd to greet his friend when he saw who Gabe came with and immediately had turned around.
elio looked like shit, plain and simple. gabe couldn't say he ever saw him like this; elio was always so full of life and happiness. seeing him there, sitting against the wall (it looked cleaned enough, at least), gabe couldn't help raising a skeptical eyebrow at his friend. "sure," he said, in response to both elio stating he was fine and that he didn't know gabe was here tonight.
gabe could swear their eyes met. so either elio was absolutely drunk out of his mind (which he doesn't sound like) or the guy was lying. "right, i'm pretty sure we saw each other." walking toward the faucet, gabe couldn't help wetting some tissue, making a small wet pad before moving towards his friend. "so the curious thing now is why would you lie to me, of all people?" without much preamble, gabe dabbed the wet towels on elio's neck, a feeble attempt to care for his friend who really looked bad.
Part of her knows that she's overreacting -- Brie has no right to be upset seeing Gabe with someone else. Their break-up was years ago, she has no claim or justification for her reaction, but seeing him with Catalina had hit a nerve inside her she didn't know existed. Brie couldn't help but wonder if this is what he felt when she'd been with Luke -- If he felt the same rush of anger, guilt, and sadness she did. It was overwhelming and unexpected, threatening to drown her with a speed she wasn't prepared for. While Luke's sudden departure and embarrassment he cause filled her with indignation, losing Gabe over misunderstanding filled her with an insurmountable heartache she's not sure she'll fully recover from.
She knew he'd moved on, Brie had seen it before. The blonde had spent the last few years hammering nails into the coffin that held her relationship with Gabe, turning them into what they are now -- They're not friends, barely acquaintances. She'd seen him bring girlfriends or dates to events they both attend, but something about the combination of alcohol and unexpectedly walking into a shared moment became the perfect storm. One that had her stomping away as fast as her heels would take her, confused by the way the sight of him with someone else simply hurt. She wanted out of there, to drown herself in gin and tonics and find a stranger to replace him with.
Gabe's voice finds her, muffled by the sound of some club remix of a Nicki Minaj song. For better or worse, she'd know that voice anywhere -- Brie keeps moving, hoping she could lose him in a sea of club members and party goers. The feeling of his hand on her elbow, forcing her both literally and metaphorically face her demons, is unexpected. "Get your fucking ha --" She stops herself as her back bumps into the wall, forced to look up at him. The party is far too crowded for them to not end up in such close proximity. Despite her heels, she still has to look up at him, and in the dim lighting, Brie can see that he looks good. The blonde pushes the thought out of her head, forcing herself to focus on how annoyed she is with him -- It's safer that way, not letting herself dive into anything deeper than surface level bullshit. He never failed to stir something within her, despite how hard she tries to push it down.
"My problem? You're the one who just fucking cornered me." She counters, yanking her arm away from him. Her tone is laced in sarcasm and frustration as it usually is when it comes to Gabe -- But the context of it is what outs her. It only occurs to her then that this is the closest they've physically been in years. It makes her heart skip a beat. "Sorry I don't want to watch you suck face with some random girl." Brie rolls her eyes, though she knows exactly who Cat is. Had it not been for that moment, she probably would have been friends with the biker -- But there's some sort of instinct in her that won't let her show kindness to someone she knows is sleeping with Gabe. In hindsight, she'll probably see the flawed logic of it all -- In this moment, she can't see past what's right in front of her. And right now, it's the last person she wants to be around.
gabe has always been good at compartmentalizing.
whatever happened with brie years ago, it was over. dead and gone, hidden away in that small shoe box amassing dust in the back of his closet. the man he was with her, buried deep, deep under the weight of the man he was now. whatever happened between them didn't exist anymore, and dwelling on it brought nothing but frustration, and anger. truth was, brie left him. no matter how she twisted it, the decision has been hers. the accusation has been hers. and the walls shaking with the door closing, it was hers.
gabe had been a spectator, watching the end of his relationship on the sidelines.
there hadn't been a place for him there, after all. his words not as important as her mother's -- oh, how he had loved her. tenderly, passionately. how the barlow women had just taken his heart out, left a bleeding hole there, without much remorse. nothing, no one, had been able to fill it up. he had forced himself to stitch it up, clumsily, to make sure the wound wouldn't reopen.
it already festered and tainted him, he couldn't do it again with her. not anymore, not ever.
her words hit him square in the face, like a slap. "what is it with you that you can't act like a fucking adult? why is it my fault you're bothered by her?" why was it his fault she decided he was the worst fucking asshole on earth for trying to move on from her for years? he's looking at her; they're too close. closer than they've ever been in years. she smells good and he wants to take a step back.
uncharacteristically, gabe wants her to understand. understand the hurt that fills his veins everytime he thinks about her, everytime they're in the vicinity of each other. for once, gabe wants to hurt her as much as she did him. the thought scares him suddenly, and his hand drops, leaves the softness of her skin. his hand flexes at his side, he takes an imperceptible step back.
"why can't you move on, brie?" her nickname, whispered angrily contrasts the last time he ever used it. contrasts with the memories associated with it. if he focuses enough, gabe thinks he can recall her laughing, scrunching her nose as she laughs, hard and deep. he hasn't seen or heard her laugh for years, now. "you forced me to move on when you forced me to be one of luke's groomsmen. though that's a moot point now, isn't it?"
@thcdisplaced
though they arrived together to the speakeasy, it didn't take long before omar and gabe were separated. there was a lot of people, and gabe made sure to ignore most glares sent his way. maybe he should have done a better effort to bond with some members when he took over dr. huang's work within the club. though at the same time, there wasn't much he could do when nico sinclair didn't like him. his opinion probably meant something to some people, judging by the meaningful stares of people he knew nothing about.
still, it didn't take long before his path crossed omar's again. and looking at his... friend (colleague? mate? acquaintance?), gabe couldn't help the small snort. he flagged the barman, one drink for himself, another for omar. "having fun? are you already drunk?"
@elioluna
there's an universal truth that the first refuge for introverts at parties is the bathroom. the music is muted, conversations are practically nonexistent and if it's clean enough, it's a nice place to take a breather. gabe's still two seconds away from fleeing the party
(he really needs a smoke, brie's looking like an absolute demon from his nightmares, gigi is nowhere to be found, he lost omar an hour ago)
so a nice stop at the bathroom seems like the best idea before he snaps at one of the members. gabe's absolutely regretting his choice of coming around; he should have let it rest, should have stayed comfortable in his affialiate role. one step in, one step out. never getting involved. that was his golden rule, though one could argue than working for the mc was getting involved well enough.
all in all, there's a relief washing over him as he steps in the bathroom (surprisingly very clean, amazing) and meets elio luna's eyes through the mirror. he doesn't dare approaching, because it seems like it's the first time he's met with something less than positive from his friend's end. "...elio?" a pause, gabe enters the bathroom slowly, apprehensive. "you good?"

@dom-miller
it's not that he's surprised to see dom here, after all, their paths had crossed a few times since lara's death. though gabe had never directly stated his disappointment at seeing dom join the MC, he knows, at least this he knows, it's not his place to comment. not since he's so tied up with both parties, and probably knows, at least by name, the guys responsible for lara's death. still, there's always a pang of guilt when seeing dom; it's mixed with a longing to see lara again, and knowing he could never again.
"never seen you so chic," he says with a small grin, a hand clapping dom's shoulder before taking place next to him at the bar. it's a lie as well: dom's always well-put, to the contrary of certain other members of the mc. "barely recognized you."
@briebarlow
"can you just stop for one fucking second!" his voice barely rises above the music as he follows brie in an unknown corridor; she's not difficult to miss, all white shining under the lights. if he wasn't busy trying to squash the anger bumbling to the surface, gabe would have let himself appreciate the curves of her hips and the way her legs seemed smooth under the touch. but of course, as always, his first reaction when seeing brie is to be so fucking annoyed.
it's not long before gabe reaches her, a hand grabbing her elbow in one swift movement, to stop her from fleeing away from him. again. he doesn't mean to push her against the wall, but there are so many people here, and gabe needs this conversation. since they saw each other at the Aubrey, where she successfully riled him up and treated him like he was nothing but dirt under her platform shoes, gabe knows. there's a fight, unresolved, hiding in the palpable tensions of their relationship. or whatever relationship they used to have.
"what's your issue, barlow? the fuck i've done to you now?"
gabriel passerini - saints & sinners party, inferno speakeasy
only liars are saints anyway.
@mdwomn
"there you are," gabe can't say he's feeling at his most comfortable right now. side-stepping any mc members who wants to strike a conversation with him (a conversation is very generous, they mostly want to tell him off for whatever he did to piss off their idiotic brains off recently) is not is favourite past time, so finding gigi who had made her own way through the crowd without him, was a relief. gabe hands her the drink he courteously got for her before taking his rightful place next to her. he's aching for a cigarette. "how much trouble are you in now?" gabe's mostly teasing, but wouldn't put it past gigi lombardi to get in trouble at an MC party.
Nico can't help but roll his eyes at this whole thing. He wouldn't have even come to see Gabe if he hadn't been staying at the Clubhouse for a while longer. If he was heading home, he would've taken care of it himself. Instead, he has to hear the idiot that laid down his bike on the street, causing Nico to eat shit himself. Of course, he blames the driver that would be soon eating worms 6 feet under but it doesn't mean he isn't annoyed with the idiot bitching about a few cuts. "If you whine anymore, he's going to get you confused with an old basset hound and I'm going to take a torch to your bike," he tells the other MC member.
When he finally leaves and now it's Nico's time, he sighs and lets him do his worst-- which he's sure Gabe will enjoy every second of. "The sad sack that just left laid down his bike and took me out after him," he explains, shaking his head. "He's paying for my fucking bike, too." Nico shakes his leg impatiently, his nerves still on edge from it all. Looking up at Gabe. "I just need a Band-Aid and I can go. I really don't need you to get gloved up like you're performing some botched surgery."
whatever nico says is drown in the insult the biker sends his way. like some botched surgery earns nico a scoff, gabe leaning to get to work on the man's wounds. as if the gloves were there particularly for nico and not to protect them both. as if gabe didn't spent the last 20 years of his life studying to be treated as someone who would botched his work. the insult. there's nothin too bad, the scratches on nico's arm, of course. maybe one stitch. "i don't want to catch whatever you have." there's something so rude, so rough, in nico's demeanor that always grated on gabe's nerves.
it's growing up with those people, always looking down on you for being somewhat different. gabe dabs some alcohol on the wound a little bit too harshly, when his father's face comes to mind. fucking mc men with anger issues. "say, were you that disrespectful to dr. huang as well or do you just have a thing against me?" gabe taunts while drying the skin and reaching out for butterfly stitches with the other hand.

i love you, it looks like rain, June Gehringer
a scoff escaped her lips, a facade to conceal the laughter that bubbled within. amongst the soft spots that gigi contained , it was unmistakable that gabe held the most tender spot in her heart. their inseparable connection ignited the moment they were assigned to be side by side in the church choir. the bond weaved through the sun-kissed summers they shared in Italy at the lombardi winery ( a cover-up for underground activity of course ) and weathered the sporadic arguments that evaporated like mist within a few short hours.
even though she had just ordered gabe to change seats, there was a gravitational pull of his presence. as she leaned into his shoulder, a surge of cool outside air bounced off of his thick jacket onto her warmly flushed cheek. ' was fine. ' she replied tersely, categorizing the day as one of those uneventful buffer days when everything unfolded with predictability. she had clocked in at work, and before she knew it, she found herself on her way to gino's.
with a playful twinkle dancing in her eyes, she couldn't resist delivering a teasing remark, undoubtedly fueled by the beer ( and the secret other she had while waiting ). ' y'know it's not polite to tell a lady she looks tired, ' she chuckled. ' matter of fact, ' she continued playfully, ' you look pretty damn tired , too. they've got products for those dark circles nowadays, ' gigi teased, her thumbpad delicately brushing against the skin beneath his eye.
the familiarity of gigi's body in his space settles something in his chest, opens it up and exhales whatever breath he was holding. it doesn't take long he removes his hat and coat, fully making his home into the cocoon they made. it was always like that, them together. always take the randomnest, shittiest place and make it their own. years of choir, summer vacations, smoking under the bleachers... the world was theirs, and everyone else lived in it.
the pizza and wine arrived before he could do anything about the fact gigi's finger was in his face, just listening to her tell him how it was. he did notice how his own question had been diverted, pushed aside. it was usual, for her. always keeping her feelings and experiences close to her chest... they were way too similar. "keep you unlady-like fingers out of my face", he grumbled, reaching out for his glass of wine and tasting it, offering it to gigi for her opinion. the vinegar lingered on his tongue, grimacing. "it's just... i have exams soon. and work hasn't been particularly easy."
he found that it was always easier, to push gigi to open up as long as he did the same. both bearing vulnerabilities to the other, secrets wavered in the story of their friendship. the pizza smell made him lean back even more, stomach churning at the idea of eating. "idiots keep calling at 3am, getting hurt like fucking idiots. sinclair has been a fucking pain man, always complaining he can do everything himself. fucking annoying."
