“Make room for another person, because I’ve got fuckall to stay.” You say in reply, so casually, as if you weren’t confirming that you wouldn’t leave.
As if you both weren’t terrified of the other going. As if neither of you knew you could afford any hotel room you wanted.
Instead, you just grip her hand a little tighter, feel her skin and think about how long it’s been. 2 years. 38 states and hundreds of hotels. Thousands of glances at her contact.
Instead, you just feel her.
The ticks and tocks of the world nearly slow to halt, and for nearly a moment (you don’t count the seconds because for once they aren’t all you have) everything will be alright.

You nod and it’s a bit too eager for you but you do it anyways because you don’t think you could stop it.
God. She’s been gone so long.
“I haven’t scripted a damn thing, but I’ve been painting.” You wait for her to stare you down, wonder when you got into actual art. You know you never really did anything with whatever talent you had because you had to stop the Batterwitch, you had to follow Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff because it got you money and status and a chance, and now that you have money in the bank and time to think you find yourself at a canvas more often than ever before.
You finally reach out and leave your hand on the table, stiller than before, tilting your head down to give her a look. Almost as if to ask “Your hand?” Almost as if you were desperate to make sure this was all real.
You couldn’t handle another dream.
Admittedly, you have to squint at him a little, incredulously, when he admits to having been painting rather than making more movies. It’s a little shameful to concede, but you hadn’t amused for a second the thought that he might have been good at - art. Anything other than movie producing.
“Good on you, then.”
You hope that he doesn’t catch the bitterness.
He puts his hand on the table and looks at you, rather pointedly, and your heart skips a little as you comply, slipping your hand into his and wondering if he’ll go again.
After a few seconds, you slip in, conversationally, “I’ll show you around my hotel room.”
You have no idea where the Hell he’s been staying, but fuck if he’s going away again.

Horacio Vaggione - L’Art de la Musique N°2, for 4 oscillators
The sound of 4 electronic oscillators is lovingly summoned in this enigmatic graphic score.
You take your coffee back and sip the overly sweet beverage. It tastes perfect on your tongue and you nearly smile because this is so close to how it should be; her trying to change your dietary habits and you ignoring her and forcing the sweetness onto her whether she agreed or not.
It’s nearly perfect for just a moment in this shitty cafe in California.
“Getting better.” You say, because it is, and you wonder if maybe she feels the same way.
Maybe you can do this if you have her back, someone who knows you as well as you know yourself and vice versa, and you wonder where she’s staying. You wonder if there’s room for two.
You dare to hope that your shitty streak of hotel hopping and drinking until your head is pounding and the memories are the same as dreams is over.
“You?”
You resist the urge to go and purchase your own coffee as had previously been your plan, rather fiddling with the edge of the tablecloth and no longer stopping yourself from staring at him. The fact that he was close enough to just touch, lightly over the cheek and whatnot, was strange enough to take a lot of your attention, and there was something in you that desperately wished he wouldn’t leave.
Two fucking years. He couldn’t leave now, not after you’d came across each other in a lucky break.
Dave turns the conversation back towards you and you wonder if you’re expected to give him a lengthy summary of what you’ve been doing. Delicately, you decide to say, “I’ve stopped writing.”
You’re not sure if the same goes for him, but just thinking it is a tad bit - painful. It’s what you’ve almost always done, alongside Dave and his tastefully awful movies, to combat the Witch, and you don’t continue writing simply because you can’t.
Writing gives you impossible chills and headaches that don’t even make sense.
You exhale, say, “It’s lucky that we met here,” and do not to state just how much it means to you.
You nod and it's a bit too eager for you but you do it anyways because you don't think you could stop it. God. She's been gone so long.
"I haven't scripted a damn thing, but I've been painting." You wait for her to stare you down, wonder when you got into actual art.
Almost as if to ask "Your hand?" Almost as if you were desperate to make sure this was all real.
You couldn't handle another dream.
“Bullshit, you take it black.”
The response is automatic because you KNOW she drinks black coffee, know it because you always would dump sugar in hers if you wanted it, know it because you’d get her coffee sometimes when you felt like fucking with the press.
There’s a sense of longing in your throat already and all you want, all you NEED is for her to keep speaking, for her to not leave you right now because you can’t stand the thought of being without her now that you’ve seen her.
You think in ticks and tocks and she looks like she’s lost something inside and you think about how fucked up this whole universe is when two people who died together are left to this.
You shrug your shoulders, just a little, and take another sip from his cup. You don’t like the sweetness as much as Dave does, but it is tolerable. “You should try it someday.” You’d always thought that Dave needed to toughen up his sweet tooth.
The admonishment reminds you that he knows you inside and out, as you do him - used to know.
It’s hard to know how to feel - you’ve been coping for two years by yourself in a tiny apartment, thinking everything out, and then Dave appears and it’s like you’ve only been apart for a few hours and you think you might very well be jealous.
Lucky bastard.
You slide his cup back towards him and allow yourself to stare at his face, now with his glasses on. You can’t tell if it’s just because of you but you feel as if he hasn’t changed a bit.
Two years and you still worry about him. “Are you okay?” you ask and decide that you resent distance.
You take your coffee back and sip the overly sweet beverage. It tastes perfect on your tongue and you nearly smile because this is so close to how it should be; her trying to change your dietary habits and you ignoring her and forcing the sweetness onto her whether she agreed or not.

(Richard Mosse)
There’s a beat (1 second 2 second 3 second 4) where you have nothing to say.
2 years.
“I…” You start and stop because what do you say to that? You’re mortified and you want to hug her but somehow you feel like you can’t and you can’t help but think of every hour and every minute and every second she was alone.
The clock in your head ticks and tocks and with every beat you feel a little bit more sick to your stomach because two years. She’d been here for two years.
It’s not a dream.
“Shit.” And it’s all you can say and all you can do and your voice is bordering wrecked because it’s been so long and you died together and now here you were getting coffee at some hipster café you’d never even heard of in some town you didn’t know all in California and suddenly you feel an obscene need for air.
He talks, for a second and barely comprehensibly, and you can’t believe yourself because you still can’t, won’t, look at him, so all you can do is drag Dave’s cup lightly toward yourself and take a sip of the almost-stale coffee. You don’t want to speak of it because it’s done and you’re not and you loathe that. You’d always been so brave brave brave (used to be) but you can only be the not-heroine for so long.
You contemplate looking up at him, telling him that it’s alright, but yet again you’re too cowardly to so you just say, disjointedly, “I like your taste in coffee.”
Even if you’d prefer to take it black.
And then you allow yourself to look up at him and take in his face and it echoes unpleasantly that you haven’t seen each other for two years.
At least, you haven’t.
"Bullshit, you take it black." The response is automatic because you KNOW she drinks black coffee, know it because you always would dump sugar in hers if you wanted it, know it because you'd get her coffee sometimes when you felt like fucking with the press.
There's a sense of longing in your throat already and all you want, all you NEED is for her to keep speaking, for her to not leave you right now because you can't stand the thought of being without her now that you've seen her.

[[ headcanons: quirks ]]
- Dave tends to tap his fingers at all times. the more nervous he is, the more his hands twitch, but he almost always has either his fingers or feet tapping to a beat in his head. These beats divide evenly into a second; whether a whole second, half, or a third. This is a vague sense of time he always has, and it bothers him when music has no set beat.
- Dave has a weird sense of what time it is. He's almost always perfectly on time to things no matter whether he tries to be late or early.
- He has a major sweet tooth.
- Dave is a major freeze baby. He tends to dislike any weather below 55*F, and wears a jacket almost everywhere.
- Another nervous habit is cracking his knuckles or wrists. They almost always crack loudly, but he can't be bothered to give a damn.

[[ headcanons: Phil the agent ]]
Being an ever-so-busy script writer/movie producer/hot famous person, Dave needs somebody else to have to deal with all of the bullshit that comes with this sort of lifestyle! This man is Phil, and he basically knows what's going on in Dave's life better than Dave does.
Phil organizes publicity events, makes sure Dave actually gets his scripts done on time, and occasionally covers up for the man when he's doing something particularly stupid.
Phil knows Dave's schedule, personal information, business information, and basically everything there is to know.
He and Dave are on good terms, though Phil is basically constantly fretting about Dave's life.
