He’s finally created it. The only thing that matters to him anymore. His entire life’s work now sitting in front of him, in all its metal glory. A manufactured masterpiece, a mechanical being capable of so much, potentially things beyond Hongbin’s wildest dreams.
Everyone said he was crazy, that he would never be able to reach this point – not before going insane. He never listened to them, refusing to give up on his work. He never stopped researching, hardly ever leaving his lab, dedicating all his time and effort into creating something no one else believed was possible. Sure, plenty of people had created robots and machines across the world, but nothing like this.
It sits up straight in the chair, unmoving, emotionless. Its features are perfect, its body sculpted exactly the way Hongbin had pictured in his head. It looks human. Far too human. Unlike his other failed attempts.
They still rest in their docks, nothing but hunks of metal and missing limbs, their heads perfect but the rest of them mangled and beginning to collect dust. All four of them had once been Hongbin’s goal, but something always went wrong. Whether it was faulty hardware, cognitive issues, or something a little more…sinister, they had to be shut down. But he couldn’t bring himself to destroy them.
So here they rest, watching on with unmoving, icy eyes. He feels as if he’s being watched, that they’re somehow still online, still alive and living. Watching him admire his perfect new creation; the new prototype. He tries not to think about what would happen if they were to wake up, knowing full well the damage they could cause. At least they don’t have limbs.
He walks around it, running his fingers lightly over its shoulders, making sure everything feels right. He hasn’t messed up, not this time. Its perfect, everything he’s been working for, the only thing that matters now. His pride and joy, his reason to live.
His finger hovers over the keyboard, hesitating to turn it on. He wants to - oh how desperately he wants to – but that fear of failure settles in his chest as he types in the code, fingers hovering above the enter key.
“Please, please, please,” he mutters under his breath, watching the machine come to life right in front of his eyes.
At first it’s only a finger, tapping against its thigh, then it’s the entire hand. The other one follows, its eyes beginning to blink slowly, mouth opening and closing, booting up at a pace too slow for Hongbin’s patience and excitement. But he stays silent, creeping around his desk to stop before it, waiting for it to come to reality.
Its eyes widen as they begin to focus, gazing up at the man in front of him with avid curiosity, its head tilting to the side as it registers Hongbin’s features. He can’t help but smile, hiding his excitement as it eyes him up and down, its icy eyes piercing and slightly intimidating.
Before Hongbin can open his mouth to speak, he’s on the ground, its hand around his throat and entire body pinning him to the floor.
“Who are you?! Why am I here?!” it shouts, its grip on his throat so tight Hongbin can barely breathe, his own hands slapping at its hard metal body in an attempt to get it off.
“Please, let go! I’m not going to hurt you!”
”Not until you answer me! Who are you?!” Its grip somehow tightens even more, and Hongbin can barely spit out his name as he gasps for air, struggling under the weight of his creation. Hopefully his next one wouldn’t be so damn heavy.
“I’m Hongbin! I promise I’m not going to hurt you,” he splutters, and at that it lets go, sitting back on his waist, its now glowing red eyes fading back to their usual icy hue.
Hongbin’s stomach drops as he lays there underneath it, breathing heavily and massaging his neck gently as it gazes down at him. Does he remember him? He hadn’t even uploaded his memories yet…
“My name is Hongbin. Lee Hongbin. And yours is-“
“I know what it is.” He seems…lost. He glances around the room, eyes scanning everything from the numerous computers to the mangled remains of the others against the wall. Is he remembering what happened before? It should be impossible, right?
“Tell me, then,” Hongbin says, pushing himself into a sitting position, leaning back on his hands as his ‘creation’ rolls off him and onto the floor, staring up at the ceiling. “Your full name.”
“It’s…Sanghyuk. Han Sanghyuk. And I’m not supposed to be here.”
