Ignoring that this is a huge over exaggeration and that Slott is just trying to ridicule fans, this is actually a valid complaint from spider-fans? But, of course, when you oversimplify it like this it only makes Spidey fans look silly.
If you think about all the advancements and character development that previous writers have put Peter through, Slott pales in comparison. Even with Slott’s “character progression,” he seems either A) more concerned with making his mark than writing good stories or; B) taking the character places he shouldn’t be going.
And there’s a difference between natural character progression and throwing the character somewhere just ‘cause.
Taking Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson and having them marry? Natural. They’ve been friends forever, they’ve helped each other heal on multiple occasions, it makes sense. Plus, you know, chemistry.
Taking Peter and having him teach science at Midtown High? Natural. He was in a teaching position in Spectacular Spider-Man during the late 70s/early 80s anyway. Peter clearly loves science, and it’s a good, down-to-earth place for him to be. It isn’t something as extravagant as becoming a full-blown well-paid scientist, and that’s good. It better fits the character. It fits.
Taking Peter and making him international? Wait, what? Taking Spider-Man, a hero well-known for being so grounded and down to earth, and making him go worldwide? Taking the everyman superhero RIGHT out of his famous environment? What?
Did we just forget all about this or what?
Even more, you can’t write personal stories like Leah or The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man when Peter operates on such a global level.
When most post-BND writers (Slott included) who write Peter make him incompetent, immature, and nothing like his pre-BND counterpart, is it so hard to see why people want that again? Half the time, Peter's written as a Deadpool minus the killing. It just isn't true to the character.
When you compare that to writers like DeFalco or DeMatteis or JMS who wrote a very mature, very family-oriented Peter Parker, it's sorely lacking. People WANT a Peter Parker who grows up, not one who just stagnates.
But, gee, maybe Slott’s right. No one could possibly want them over these gems:
And, yeah, maybe wanting a mature, actually well-written Peter means going back in the direction that they were going in ten, twenty years ago. It's still more progressive than what we have now: a Tony Stark lite.
