THE DETAILS (tw: child abuse, domestic violence, alcoholism, drug use, death)
Gabriel was born in Los Angeles, to an exotic dancer and a father he never met. His mother never mentioned him, and he never asked her about him either, guessing he was probably a customer or some man she met at the bar during one of her drinking sessions.
When he was four years-old, his mother brought back to their home his new stepdad. The family dynamic became extremely chaotic, since the man was abusive with his mother and him. He frequently beat him, or yelled at him for no reason and for years Gabe had to hide bruises under long-sleeved shirts on hot days at school or lied about “tripping. More than once, he had to lie to the nurses at the hospital after getting stitches. Those years were very somber for the young boy and surprisingly, nobody seemed to ever question his lies or explanations.
He was 11 years-old when the reign of terror finally stopped. One day, when he was coming back from school, an ambulance was in front of their home taking away his stepfather. The man had just suffered a stroke, the result of years of drinking. For a few weeks, his life with his mother seemed almost normal, until she slipped into a deep depression from the loss of her long-term boyfriend. Gabriel never really understood why she was so sad after all the years of bad treatments. He had to take care of the house and went to school, skipping class frequently to take care of his mother who could hardly get out of bed at this point. That’s also when he started shoplifting and breaking into home to steal to pay the bills. It was probably what saved him, when he was caught one day stealing food at the supermarket. The social services decided to place him into foster care. It wasn’t especially better than being alone with his mother, but it wasn’t worse either.
On his 18th birthday, he was kicked out of his foster home and bought a bus ticket for Sacramento. He had no specific plan there and had never been to the city before. He had picked the city randomly, with the very little money he had in his pockets. When he arrived at destination, he was homeless for six months, living on the beach. He befriended six other young people in the same situation and together they decided to rent a four bedrooms apartment. During this time, he was cumulating jobs, trying to put his life together.
It was at 21 years-old that his life changed drastically. At the time, he had just started a training as a bartender in this very trendy bar in town and was discussing with this businessman who offered him a job as a camera guy. It was very well paid and interesting for a young adult with literally no life experience, so of course Gabriel accepted the job offer. He could always keep his job at the bar on the side if it didn’t work out. That’s how he made his start in the adult film industry, almost accidentally. He ended up quitting the bartending job and working full-time as a camera guy, but soon made his way as a film editor. Quickly he became well-known in the business.
So well-known that ten years later, Gabriel was starting his own adult film company with a friend. He was 32 at the time, and at first he was nervous that it would not work, since there were so many companies just like his. But surprisingly, it went remarkably well, and he became extremely successful. Quickly, his company became one of the most important in the business. He attended big parties and promoted nightclubs with his brand, flirted with incredibly beautiful girls, had more money than he ever dreamed of, to sum it up, his life was great. Except for some “details”. An annulled marriage in Vegas, his many failed attempts at handling his drug addiction that resulted in a very problematic relationship… If his professional life is a success, his personal life is on the opposite, even if he is particularly good at hiding it.
It was an expected letter that brought him to Phoenix, AZ. In fact, he had never set foot in Arizona before and had probably never thought he would end up there either. After learning that his mother had passed away, after not hearing of her for decades, he learned that he was the sole inheritor of his grandparents’ house. He had never even met his grandparents – or knew he had any but apparently his mom had ended up moving in with them after losing his custody. He has temporarily moved into the old house, which he plans to renovate and sell, and digs up some old memories from his mysterious family he never knew he had while he is in town.
