ryan was engaged once to a woman named anna. (short for annabeth —- she hated her name, he adored it. ) they met in undergrad, dated for four years, then, at the end of her first year of grad school, he asked her to marry him. ryan was traveling when it happened, plane bound for los angeles to talk with an agent. it was raining, the other driver had been drinking, and anna went skidding into a guardrail.

the man walked away with a broken arm and the worst hangover of his life. anna slipped into a coma for three months until her family was forced to pull the plug.

( for all his cheerful demeanour, ryan still hasn’t forgiven himself. )

later that year, ryan put on his second titled stand-up show in new york city. it’s title: this is not comedy. he dedicated the one night performance to anna, and if his voice was choked by the end of the show, no one said a word.
