I was very moved by your post "On drawing, art school...". Lately I question the real value of my abilities. I've self-studied since childhood - though now that I have back/wrist pain most days, it's difficult. I've been wondering if it's best to transfer what I know to digital art (tho I almost feel like a traitor). Drawing traditionally is like an old friend I keep returning to. While this isn't a question, I'm glad you feel the same about it. Hope you take care. :)
We’re the ones giving value to our own craft. It’s harder than having to rely on the validation and affirmation we get from the industry or our peers… like this, we question ourselves time and time again. But in the end, it’s our self-perception that motivates (or demotivates) us in this struggle.
I hope that you can come to accept that our vision changes, our abilities, our preferences change through the years. Sometimes they don’t; sometimes it doesn’t matter. And that’s okay. You shouldn’t feel like you’re being defaulted to follow a certain path, in art or in life. Unless you choose it wholeheartedly (whether it falls on your lap or you seek it actively) you cannot decide to be the best you can be at it. And isn’t that the point of being an artist anyway? Amateurs and pros and formally-trained and self-trained - we all want to pursue our soul and life through creating things. We cannot help it. It’s what matters, that conviction and stubbornness. Let’s not forget it as we wade through the muck of our anxiety. (I say this for myself as well.)
