star crossed
he was your everything - your hope, your savior and your love. and maybe thatâs why his betrayal cut deeper than every one before.
kaeya x gender neutral reader, drabble, sfw.
warnings: unhealthy ( onesided on readerâs part ) relationship, angst, i wouldnât say itâs dark in anything more than the vibe, potentially canon divergent but weâll never really know until mihoyo shows my man more love - iâm taking a lot of liberties here.
he was just a breath away, but still, it felt so far. the rain cut a path down your cheeks, mingling with the tears you had shed countless times before. all for a man - a man who had cast you aside and left without a parting word. a man you were still desperately in love with.
you clenched your fist tighter around your blade, gritting your teeth. âi waited for you.â
he wouldnât meet your eyes. hand still on the pommel of his blade, he shrugged his shoulders, staring at the falling rain. âmaybe you shouldnât have. maybe you should have moved on when you had the chance.â
his words struck a nerve. you had waited. you had waited in a home plagued by death and ruin, one that had brought you nothing but despair and a sliver of hope that maybe he would be the one to save you. and by the time you had managed to crawl your way out of it, the blood of your friends and family stained your hands.
and then you found him.
but he wasnât the man you remembered. no, he had changed. he wasnât fighting for your nation anymore, but instead, the home he had made here.
it made your blood boil.
âmoved on?â you laughed, ignoring the crack in your voice and the lump that found its way into your throat. âhow could i possibly move on when i was living a nightmare,â you said, steadying your trembling hands. âi watched everyone i loved die, kaeya. everyone but you.â
he finally looked up, eyes staring into your own. seeing you for the first time in years. âyouâve been chasing a memory all this time,â his face, his voice - it was expressionless. he tightened his grip on his sword, tip pointed at you. âyou need to move on.â
you didnât know what you were expecting. a part of you yearned for him to reach for your hand, to never let go and promise he would stand by your side. but you knew he had made his choice. he had abandoned khaenri'ah long ago, perhaps even before his father left him on the steps of the dawn winery. but you still had hope.
maybe that was your mistake. hope. you hadnât seen kaeya in years - it only made sense that he would have changed. but the man before you was barely recognizable. where once stood a man who had fought for his people, a traitor resided in his place. one who had turned his back on everything he once stood for - and you couldnât fathom why.
the very thought of it made you sick.
âmy heart was never yours to begin with.â
thunder rumbled in the distance, doing little to hide your anguish. the two of you had grown up together, shared your dreams and wishes with one another as you watched your home crumble at the seams. and here he was abandoning you and everything your hope stood for. your sword felt heavy in your hands, the tip coming to rest on the muddy ground. choking back your sobs, you glared up at him with teary eyes, daring him to but the final nail in the coffin.
he shook his head. âgo back home, if you make a move against mondstadt iâll make sure itâs your last.â
emotionless. just as he had been since the moment you had found him. there was no honey or sugar in his words, nothing to soften the blow. and yet there was no venom either. he neither loathed or cared for you - you were nothing.
and that was what made it hurt far more than it should. you collapsed to the ground, screaming into the wind. it was only you, now.
venom seeped into your words as you flung curses at his back. you were going to kill him, lay waste to this new home he had made without you. make him feel exactly as you were - desperate with nothing to lose. his figure grew further away with every word, growing blurry in the storm. he didnât spare a glance back. he just kept moving towards the light and warmth he had found for himself in this dreary world.
and you were left behind. left behind to scream words into the wind that would never reach him. at most you were a memory, a reminder of the life he abandoned. and at your worst you werenât even a second thought. a bitter, empty husk of broken promises and fading dreams.
you were nothing.
