Relief washed over her body as the sound of the judge’s gavel echoed in the court room. Not only had she found her client not guilty, but she had finally locked the twisted girl away.
“Mia!” Lana exclaimed, as the young lawyer exited into the lobby. “I can’t believe you did it!”
“Thanks for the faith, Lana.” The medium suppressed a smile as she wrapped her arms around the woman. “I was just lucky I was able to see so easily through her lies.”
The detective began to lead her friend towards the door. “Finally, you can stop obsessing over Dahlia. Now you can let go-“
Mia stopped, “Let go of what Lana? Diego?”
Lana turned back toward her friend. “Mia, that’s not what I was saying and you know it. You’ve caught the person that hurt him; but you have to prepare yourself incase he doesn’t come out of this.”
“Honey, you don’t know that he will. You can’t tie yourself down to this man in a coma. You should be able to live your life. Armando would have wanted you to.”
“What do you know about what he wanted?!” Mia snapped, “What do you know about what we wanted?!” Tears fell from her eyes in frustration and she felt her knees go weak. “I can’t give up on him.” She steadied herself by leaning on the wall. “I have to go.”
Lana reached for her friend’s hand and was pushed away as the medium rushed out the door. “Mia, where are you going?”
The defense attorney ran to her old run down car without stopping; throwing open the door upon arrival. She climbed in without hesitation and slammed the door shut behind her as she began to sob. Her entire body trembled as she cried - the first time in months she reminded herself - and she leaned her head on the worn black steering wheel.
Minutes passed before Lana found her. She knocked on the window, alerting Mia to her presence. “I’m coming in,” she stated before she opened the passenger’s side door and seated herself next her old roommate.
“What are you doing” Mia sniffed as she wiped the edge of her nose with her sleeve.
“Look, I shouldn’t have said what I did. I don’t know much about what was going on in your relationship with Diego, but I know you were in love with him and he was crazy about you.” She placed her hand on the younger girl’s shoulder. “I just don’t want to see you hurt if the worst does happen. You have to hope for the best and prepare for the worst.”
The brunette woman beside her remained silent. The detective continued. “I know where you’re planning on going, so I’ll let you go. But just remember I will always be here for you, even if you’re pissed at me.”
The young attorney watched in silence as her friend climbed out of the car. “Thank you,” she muttered through small hiccups.
The nurses’ station was quiet when she arrived; no introduction or identification was needed as Mia approached. They handed her the small visitor’s badge and she walked down the stark white hallways.
She sat down in the plastic chair that was left by his bedside. She edged the chair closer to the bed and clasped Diego’s hand in hers. “I did it.” She whispered, leaning closer to her lover’s face. “Today, I finally got Dahlia. Of course, it was too late for you, but she’s locked away now.”
She swore she felt his hand tighten around hers at her words and it brought a smile to her lips. She leaned over and kissed his forehead, hoping as she did every day, that today would be the day he would wake.
