Is the Lorax actually a monkey? In a study published this week, researchers used a facial recognition algorithm to show that Dr. Seuss’ famous environmentalist has a face similar to several monkeys, even more so than other Seuss characters. Why monkeys? The researchers think that Theodor Geisel was inspired by the patas monkey (bottom photo) while visiting the Mount Kenya Safari Club, where he wrote nearly all of the book. These monkeys dine primarily on acacia trees, which have a scruffy appearance similar to the Lorax’s Truffula trees.

Here’s how the facial recognition algorithm works: Images of each face are broken down into many “eigenfaces” — a fundamental set of faces. Like letters in the alphabet are used to make sentences, eigenfaces can be combined in different ways to make any face. When researchers compared the amount of each eigenface present in images of the Lorax and several monkeys, they considered the similarity to be undeniable.

Let the Lorax Speak for the Trees!

"Our 4th grade class read Dr. Seuss’s, The Lorax, and liked that the Lorax character “spoke for the trees.” We do this at our school by running a recycling program and by canceling unwanted catalogs -www.CatalogCancelingChallenge.com! The book encourages people to help the planet. We enjoyed that in the end the Once-ler realized that life is not just about making money, it’s about what’s best for others and the environment.

We were excited for The Lorax movie to come out in March, but when we went to the movie website, there was absolutely nothing about saving the Earth which is what Dr. Seuss wanted us to learn. The site is more about selling tickets. The trailer did not include much about the environment, either! We think Universal Pictures needs to “green up" this website."
